Anyone else on cholesterol prescriptions?

Fun-Complaint-4724@reddit

Stopped alcohol and all the bad cholesterol (pre-hypertension) and bp went away.

Getting it checked every 6 months. It blew up in perimenopause. Fixing my diet didn't work but what DID finally bring it down was exercise. I wasn't doing any before and I've had great results getting into it with my mini trampoline.

Yep! And blood pressure meds!

I’m on as much olmesartan as I can handle. I constantly test around 90/60 at home but anxiety-ridden doctors visits I measure 121/80 or so which they conclude is just about perfect.
View on Reddit #75142660

dndhdhdjdjd382737383@reddit

You don't want your pressure to be any lower than that 90/60 is the very low of what's normal for an adult
View on Reddit #75265518

Same except for me it’s the dentist. Normal at the doctor but my dentist about shits her pants every time she takes it.

Statins and beta blockers, my old man medicine combo. And a fibre supplement too, to complete my wild evening.

Nope, my cholesterol is in good shape. In fact all my blood work is. I'm on a blood pressure med for borderline/mild hypertension though.

No beef, no pork, no cheese, no fried foods, no full fat dairy, no snacks with more than 1.5g sat fat, no meals with more than 2g sat fat = no meds for me
View on Reddit #75185044

MLDaffy@reddit

Shockingly no. Only prescribed ibuprofen for DDD which I don't take half the time cause it doesn't help. So far fingers crossed no cholesterol, sugar, heart or anything. Knowing my luck it will hit all at once and I'll be walking out of a checkup with 20 bottles of meds.

Been on Rosuvastatin 20 mg (along with daily aspirin and Losartan) for almost a year now. After a few panic attacks (with high heart rate) sent me to the ER, I saw a cardiologist. Stress test and heart monitor results were fine, but I also got a Coronary Calcium Scan and my doctor was concerned enough with that result to put me on the meds. After dietary changes and first 3 months on the meds, I got my total cholesterol down from 214 to 125. Going back to see my cardiologist in February to see how I’m doing, but I already know I fell off the wagon a few times with the diet, but I’ve taken my meds consistently. Hoping this year I can get my diet under control so, as my doctor says, I can “live into my hundreds.” Not sure if my retirement funds will agree though, LOL.

winnower8@reddit

My brother died at 49. He was very fit but had a lot of blockages due to genetics. My other brother had to get open heart surgery. Everyone our age should get a cardiac calcium CT scan to show how much blockages are in your heart (even if you’re asymptomatic).

I was saying that… saying that… and then my doc literally just wrote a statin prescription after seeing my bloodwork for like the 5th time.  …lol, my diet hasn’t improved, it never improved, but my cholesterol sure did.
View on Reddit #75147432

headsbig@reddit

I've actually have made incremental improvements on my own. I don't eat as much red meat, I've doubled down on my grilling lol and take my krill oil religiously.

I have a friend who was really resisting meds even after several years of the same results. I finally convinced her statins are not the end of the world and that her health was the priority. Instead, when she went back this last time, the doctor told her all her lifestyle changes had worked after all.

High or low iron? I have too much iron, so I give blood quarterly. That has helped with liver and cholesterol issues I was having.

Given my family’s genetics, I’m surprised I don’t have high blood pressure. It must be because I have 2 cute little birds. They’re parakeets. However, even in my 20s, my blood pressure has gone up when sick.
View on Reddit #75171241

Glittering_Tea5502@reddit

Unfortunately, I have been on them for 12 years. My family’s genetics don’t help. Somehow, losing weight made me have to have the dose increased.

Not sure why they’re downvoting you. This is the direct source. It isn’t the saturated fat in our diets, but even many old doctors still believe it. Has been debunked for most of our lives. The fat free movement is why there’s sugar in everything.

View on Reddit #75157083

Elenakalis@reddit

I've managed to keep my cholesterol, sugar, and blood pressure in line. It's the b12 that gets me. I have an injection I do every 2 weeks and it keeps me just above seriously low. I've had several rounds of testing and seen an endocrinologist. It's apparently just a quirk that my body thinks b12 is trash and will do a poor job of absorbing it orally. I do try to avoid the metabolic triad, since my dad and paternal grandma had all 3 and each piece increases your dementia risk. My grandma had dementia and kidney failure. My dad has the early signs of mild cognitive impairment that looks like it will progress to dementia and also had a major heart attack 2 years after failing to listen to his doctor's advice on improving his health. I'd take statins if nothing else was working, because I work in memory care and being diagnosed with dementia is my worst nightmare.
View on Reddit #75155045

Comfortable-nerve78@reddit

Shockingly no my numbers were really good. I ate like trash for years. Had to change my diet looks like it is working. My last tests all my numbers were positive so yay. 👍

Not yet. Doctor said to exercise more and lose weight. Instead, I ignored their advice and lowered my saturated fat intake, increased soluble fiber, and switched to filtered coffee, and now my cholesterol is excellent. Some doctors are not up to date on what lifestyle habits actually have the biggest impact.

I do keto and stay in ketosis year-round. Sure my cholesterol is high, but it comes with a diet and I have zero interest in using medication to attempt to lower it.
View on Reddit #75137792

Proof-Emergency-5441@reddit

It does not come fron diet. It is primarily genetic.  If you want to die, then keep up the diet that doesn't do anything (unless you have epilepsy).
View on Reddit #75140948

eyeshills@reddit

Doesn’t do anything? I’ve lost fat, built muscle, mind is a lot clearer, and all of my other metabolic labs are really good. Cholesterol isn’t the bogeyman it’s been made out to be.
View on Reddit #75143461

Proof-Emergency-5441@reddit

Any balanced diet will do that.  Carbs aren't the boogeyman you make them out to be.
View on Reddit #75143988

That’s what every member of my family thinks who is presently suffering from diabetes. Say what you want about my diet, but it makes type two diabetes almost impossible to develop.

I’ve been on a statin and blood pressure meds for years as has most of my family. Have given up most red meat aside for an occasional steak. Lots of salads/fish/Mediterranean style diet. My blood pressure is really sensitive to sodium and trying to keep that under 1200 mg daily is an ongoing frustrating challenge. Especially if eating out since they load absolutely everything up with salt.
