Getting it checked every 6 months. It blew up in perimenopause.
Fixing my diet didn't work but what DID finally bring it down was exercise. I wasn't doing any before and I've had great results getting into it with my mini trampoline.
I’m on as much olmesartan as I can handle. I constantly test around 90/60 at home but anxiety-ridden doctors visits I measure 121/80 or so which they conclude is just about perfect.
No beef, no pork, no cheese, no fried foods, no full fat dairy, no snacks with more than 1.5g sat fat, no meals with more than 2g sat fat = no meds for me
Shockingly no. Only prescribed ibuprofen for DDD which I don't take half the time cause it doesn't help. So far fingers crossed no cholesterol, sugar, heart or anything. Knowing my luck it will hit all at once and I'll be walking out of a checkup with 20 bottles of meds.
Been on Rosuvastatin 20 mg (along with daily aspirin and Losartan) for almost a year now. After a few panic attacks (with high heart rate) sent me to the ER, I saw a cardiologist. Stress test and heart monitor results were fine, but I also got a Coronary Calcium Scan and my doctor was concerned enough with that result to put me on the meds. After dietary changes and first 3 months on the meds, I got my total cholesterol down from 214 to 125. Going back to see my cardiologist in February to see how I’m doing, but I already know I fell off the wagon a few times with the diet, but I’ve taken my meds consistently. Hoping this year I can get my diet under control so, as my doctor says, I can “live into my hundreds.” Not sure if my retirement funds will agree though, LOL.
My brother died at 49. He was very fit but had a lot of blockages due to genetics. My other brother had to get open heart surgery. Everyone our age should get a cardiac calcium CT scan to show how much blockages are in your heart (even if you’re asymptomatic).
I was saying that… saying that… and then my doc literally just wrote a statin prescription after seeing my bloodwork for like the 5th time.
…lol, my diet hasn’t improved, it never improved, but my cholesterol sure did.
I've actually have made incremental improvements on my own. I don't eat as much red meat, I've doubled down on my grilling lol and take my krill oil religiously.
I have a friend who was really resisting meds even after several years of the same results. I finally convinced her statins are not the end of the world and that her health was the priority. Instead, when she went back this last time, the doctor told her all her lifestyle changes had worked after all.
Given my family’s genetics, I’m surprised I don’t have high blood pressure. It must be because I have 2 cute little birds. They’re parakeets. However, even in my 20s, my blood pressure has gone up when sick.
Not sure why they’re downvoting you. This is the direct source. It isn’t the saturated fat in our diets, but even many old doctors still believe it. Has been debunked for most of our lives.
The fat free movement is why there’s sugar in everything.
I've managed to keep my cholesterol, sugar, and blood pressure in line. It's the b12 that gets me. I have an injection I do every 2 weeks and it keeps me just above seriously low. I've had several rounds of testing and seen an endocrinologist. It's apparently just a quirk that my body thinks b12 is trash and will do a poor job of absorbing it orally.
I do try to avoid the metabolic triad, since my dad and paternal grandma had all 3 and each piece increases your dementia risk. My grandma had dementia and kidney failure. My dad has the early signs of mild cognitive impairment that looks like it will progress to dementia and also had a major heart attack 2 years after failing to listen to his doctor's advice on improving his health.
I'd take statins if nothing else was working, because I work in memory care and being diagnosed with dementia is my worst nightmare.
Shockingly no my numbers were really good. I ate like trash for years. Had to change my diet looks like it is working. My last tests all my numbers were positive so yay. 👍
I was until the summer. Totally shattered my idea that I was healthy. Spent a week in the hospital and found out I have multiple life long medical issues.
Not yet. Doctor said to exercise more and lose weight. Instead, I ignored their advice and lowered my saturated fat intake, increased soluble fiber, and switched to filtered coffee, and now my cholesterol is excellent. Some doctors are not up to date on what lifestyle habits actually have the biggest impact.
Yeah been on Lipitor for 5ish years now or so. Despite an ex girlfriend telling me I needed to stop due to the risks of colon cancer that I’ve never heard of or seen since. She was a head case though so to be expected.
I do keto and stay in ketosis year-round. Sure my cholesterol is high, but it comes with a diet and I have zero interest in using medication to attempt to lower it.
Doesn’t do anything? I’ve lost fat, built muscle, mind is a lot clearer, and all of my other metabolic labs are really good. Cholesterol isn’t the bogeyman it’s been made out to be.
That’s what every member of my family thinks who is presently suffering from diabetes. Say what you want about my diet, but it makes type two diabetes almost impossible to develop.
It’s up there but trying to get it down naturally. It runs high in both sides of the family. Everything else-BP, weight, etc is normal and good. I’ll get it rechecked in 6 months.
Aww, one of my 7th grade French students drew one of those on his whiteboard today. :)
For years my doctor has told me that I’m borderline, and taking flaxseed oil keeps me from needing medication
Was fine when I got checked last time. Blood pressure is fine too. The big challenge will be if all the extra drinking I did during COVID bites me in the ass.
Yes, but not due to age or bad diet, mine is genetics, I've had high cholesterol my entire life, so do my kids, I even pulled up my old military records to show my kiddos my 140/70 bp and triglyceride numbers at a time when I was in peak physical fitness lol. I've been on cholesterol and daily aspirin for bp for about a decade now haha
I had high cholesterol at 6 from my love of cheese. I was thin too. It’s not just an age thing.
Also my friends 2nd grader told his mom about this cool way to make an S and she said show me and filmed it and it was so stinking cute yet hilarious what gets passed down
I’ve been on a statin and blood pressure meds for years as has most of my family. Have given up most red meat aside for an occasional steak. Lots of salads/fish/Mediterranean style diet. My blood pressure is really sensitive to sodium and trying to keep that under 1200 mg daily is an ongoing frustrating challenge. Especially if eating out since they load absolutely everything up with salt.
It was on the way up in my early/mid-30s, got warned once about my triglycerides, but I started eating less and exercising more, and for the past 5+ years my cholesterol numbers have been great.
Mine was high as fuck three years ago with a family history of high cholesterol.
I stopped eating meat and cheese and other foods high in saturated fat, ate oatmeal every morning for six months and it went down 20% but was still over 200 LDL.
I’ve been taking 10mg of Atorvastatin daily for like 3 years now and I’m under 200 total with like 80 LDL. Shit works.
