ULPT: How can I get ADHD meds ASAP?
Posted by idiot_throwaway654@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 159 comments
So, long story short, I've had ADHD for nearly 20 years now, I was diagnosed at 7. I have been taking some form of ADHD meds ever since. Started on Ritalin and Concerta, now I'm on Vyvanse and Adderall. Last month, however, the telehealth psychiatrist I had been using (I found telehealth far easier than having to muster up the executive function to actually go to an appointment, plus my schedule is incredibly busy as it is) suddenly shut down. And now, for the past week or so, I've been scrambling around trying to find a way to get my ADHD meds refilled. I finally found a PCP who accepts my insurance, but the soonest appointment I could get wasn't until later next week. I would very much prefer not to have to go to work with all these withdrawal symptoms (I can barely go an hour without practically passing out, and focusing on anything is next to impossible, and as a manager, those are both things I can't have happening).
So basically, my question is, how do I get ADHD meds as soon as possible? I don’t care how unethical it is, or how legal or not, I need my ADHD meds as soon as goddamn possible. Preferably like, within the day.
Thank you.
EDIT: Even if you don't know how I could get ADHD meds, I'll even take ways to manage this god-awful withdrawal. Like, literally any way to stay awake or focus as long as it isn't life threatening or have awful side-effects, or even ways to minimize disciplinary action for calling off work, messing up while on the clock due to inability to focus, or anything else like that.

A lot of online vendors sell pressed amphetamine pills ive found quite closely dosed to script Adderall. The presses are amazing quality too.
Usually a mix of amph sulphate and a little meth for a tiny kick.
If its really thst bad for you and you have no other options feel free to reach out and ill get you a list of vendors.
Usual-Ad-9554@reddit
it's not meth. it's an off schedule type of speed that's close to it though. for what this person is describing, it will definitely give them the dopamine and energy they are desperate for til their script arrives but for people with actual ADHD who aren't trying to feel high in any type of way and medicate to feel normal, you can tell it's not quite right. but in a pinch, it's absolutely better than nothing at all.
defnotbjk@reddit
For future viewers….i am not sure why this person is so confident but in the states if it’s not from a pharmacy and it was bought online for under anything $1/mg, then its meth. The days people mixed any type of RC into adderall presses are gone. Not cost effective and harder to source. Don’t believe either of us thought. Reagent test your shit if you are not taking something from a pharmacy.

Ulpt, find a homeless shelter or public library & ask around. Real advice, that type of withdrawal doesn’t happen without abuse, take weekends/day’s off from it & store up the extra to avoid developing heavy physical dependency.
Cultural_Peak1269@reddit
That’s a ridiculous statement. Physical dependence is going to happen from stimulant medication. If you have debilitating adhd you take your meds daily, as prescribed. You shouldn’t take breaks from your prescribed meds unless discussed with your prescriber and you have the ability to be in a place where being unable to manage adhd symptoms won’t impact anything. I swear it’s like people forget adhd is a disability bc people throw the term around like it’s nothing. This person has been dx’d and medicated almost their entire life and you think they wouldn’t have withdrawal symptoms?
Individual_Rush271@reddit
Oh my God you couldn’t be more right…these m types of comments about “taking breaks” and “that won’t happen unless you are abusing the medication” are just about the most infuriating for me…Bitch I’ve been taking Adderall for 25 years!
Doctors need to understand their delusional behavior and negligent care is going to make them prime for replacement with AI.
People think AI wouldn’t be empathetic and wouldn’t prescribe the right drugs…I don’t know about your experience but my experience in collaboration with my AI is a hell of a lot more plesssnt than the rolled eyes and “drug seeker behavior” bull shit I see on the charts.
What a horrible way to think…to treat someone as if they don’t need the drug studies after study has proven improves outcomes. But instead place a label on them that carries it with it one of the worst negative stigmas our society can ascribe to an individual.
People in pain are suffering as well as result of this delusion and I even saw there dying people shouldn’t be given morphine….its like we all forgot the horroific screaming and blood curdling gasps for air—anxiety and panic that sets in…and lasts for days—sometimes weeks—until we finally die. So, yeah let’s take away that morphine shall we?
The doctors of today are committing malpractice and causing far more pain than the drugs themselves ever could. They are delusional and lead a big chunk of the American population as well. AI will most certainly fix this but it’s going to be an all out war before we’ll see the end of agencies like the aDEA and the release of all “non. Violent” offenders whose only crime was violating the laws put in place so that they would not violate the laws.
It’s so backwards and a disturbing modern day hysteria that resembles the crazy witch trials of the 17thbcentury. Drugs are not bad—you are.
WildRhizobium@reddit
I am a psychiatrist. I always tell my patients to take a break from their meds at least 2 days a week. This is how we avoid the risk of withdrawal and the need for escalating doses. All my colleagues follow the same guidelines.
feryoooday@reddit
Wait so I’m just supposed to have no executive function, be incapable of listening to people, paying attention or being on time twice a week? And I’ve somehow never heard of this? Is it new knowledge?
jalapeno442@reddit
Yeah why would I want to do that? It’s a medication for a disability
feryoooday@reddit
I genuinely don’t understand how I’d be capable of existing as a functioning adult. 2 days unmedicated means that I’d have to stack up my chores on days that I’m working, and would be likely to burn out and get task paralysis. If I forget one day it rolls over into ruining my plans for the week.
If it’s necessary medically I guess that’s just how I’ll have to live. But I hadn’t heard of it from my doctors, and it seems dismissive of how the disorder affects everyday life and how much the medication helps to balance life to say “just rest” 2 days a week.
CutieKiley@reddit
I mean you really should learn coping mechanisms to handle life without medication to some degree. Over reliance on medication isn't a super good idea. The idea usually isn't to 'just rest' but to find a balance between the elevated productivity from the medication and your normal ability.
ADHD can be partially managed with coping skills and alternative approaches to certain tasks. The mindset of needing the medication at all times is a part of the dependency they form. Stimulants will convince you that you need them for all things even when there are times when you don't actually need them. It sounded impossible for me too but nowadays I don't even take them at all really I manage better than I did with them.
It's understandable to want medication at all times but it's also important to recognize that a disability doesn't mean no ability. You can learn to do things in a way that works for you with some compromises. Maybe you need paper plates instead of washing dishes or to order groceries instead of shopping yourself. Maybe you need a set schedule for work. If you just run a 110% with the medication at all times you'll never feel the need to look for better ways to live and actually free up bandwidth for other things.
NoInvestment3870@reddit
Very well put.
Legi0ndary@reddit
It's called resting.
idiot_throwaway654@reddit (OP)
This is a very new phenomenon. My psychiatrists never, ever, ever told me that until maybe this past year, and by then it was too late.
WildRhizobium@reddit
Yeah, it sounds like that online prescriber did you dirty. Sorry you're going through this, OP.
Kind-Sheep@reddit
Not a new phenomenon just some psychiatrists don't advise their patients that way
haleontology@reddit
I've never heard of this at all and I've been prescribed these meds for 20 years- either this isn't true, or someone's colleagues aren't getting the memo
Kind-Sheep@reddit
My psychiatrist advised against that but told me I could skip of i wanted to lol
Dizzy_Garlic_6388@reddit
Are there any peer reviewed studies that prove this works? Not saying this to be argumentative, my doctor just told me this has been shown to actually not be effective so I'd be interested in seeing research from either side.
tapout22002@reddit
My son is on ADHD medication and his physician told him specifically to not use it when he doesn’t need it and that there are no issues with withdrawal. Now my daughter who was on depression medication, that’s a different story.
jalapeno442@reddit
But people with ADHD are on their meds because they need them lol, how does he determine when he goes without? On days without school or work?
tapout22002@reddit
Exactly. If he doesn’t have school or he has an easy day of school, he would opt not to take them. He regularly skipped weekends and holidays.
CutieKiley@reddit
Higher workload may require medication. When you can manage without, you should. I have ADHD and in my experience (as well as others I have talked too) it's pretty common to overuse your medication. Prescribing it as needed is usually a better option. It preserves the effectiveness for longer and allows people to learn alternative coping mechanisms that don't rely on medication.
New-Distribution-981@reddit
Yes, I am telling you he shouldn’t have withdrawal symptoms. As somebody who was prescribed them (Ritalin and Adderall at different times) daily for 20 years, then one day just stopped with no tapering, there wasn’t a hint of withdrawal.
Could I tell the difference between me on and off the meds? Yes. But that was about it. Well, that and I ate more.
Lo and behold, 10 years later I go back on them for another 5 years and stop again with no tapering (lost my job and insurance this time). Surprise surprise: no withdrawal. The pages here are filled with people with the same experience.
Now, I’m sure many people will feel slightly off or hungry or constipated or nauseas or whatever whenever they stop taking any medicine they’ve taken daily for 20 years. But it’s nothing that should need to be “managed,” or black market purchases considered. The level of symptoms he’s describing… not likely caused by lack of access to RX use.
CutieKiley@reddit
People do experience psychological withdrawals after stopping daily use. It's not everyone but many do
Kind-Sheep@reddit
Many people do well and many people don't do well. I experience withdrawals and I haven't been on these meds long. I have a more sensitive reaction to medications.
OPs experience isn't abnormal
Dry-Mastodon6275@reddit
I've been diagnosed and medicated for 20 years, taking Adderall the last 15. I was told by my doctor specifically to take breaks from it. When I skip the weekend dosages, as directed, I do not get withdrawal symptoms at all. Stop pushing negative and untrue stigmas, as it makes accessing our meds significantly more difficult.
Ok-Brother-5762@reddit
And my doctor told me to not take breaks. Moral of the story is that everyone has different needs and reactions and should speak with their prescribing physician about what suits them best.
Kind-Sheep@reddit
Yeah and psych meds affect everyone differently too
Kind-Sheep@reddit
My psychiatrist told me she would rather I don't take breaks except on occasion. I've been on 15mg of Adderall XR for over a year and have skipped days, but if I skip more than a couple my mood becomes very unstable. Because of its effect on your dopamine levels.
jalapeno442@reddit
Why would I want to skip doses on my days to myself? To give my whole self only on work days? Fuck that.
sfd6546@reddit
Thank you!!!
People who are not taking their ADHD meds as prescribed are abusing their meds.
Medication non-compliance/treatment non-compliance, under-medicating (not only over-medicating) without your doctor's approval or knowledge, etc are generally considered pretty blatant and serious medication abuses. Such abuses of medication are usually considered to be serious violations of the doctor-patient treatment contract, with consequences for such a violation patient/client to include immediate termination of services.
Why is it that people do not seem to understand that skipping days or doses (be it for a self approved "medication vacation" and/or to "stockpile"/develop a back stock of your meds) and any other ways of taking their meds other than rxd/known and approved/monitored by their doctor is abusing the medication???
Yes, taking your medication in any ways other than rx'd ways, is a misuse/abuse of your medication... Taking too much and/or taking too little!!!
UsefulEagle101@reddit
And what do you call it when you cannot get a refill because all pharmacies in town are out of stock for 1-2 weeks???
idiot_throwaway654@reddit (OP)
Not sure why people are downvoting you, you are 100% correct.
NoInvestment3870@reddit
Advice Source: Take em myself, 15 or 16 years now & went through a similar “omfg I’m out for a week” issue, op is describing a very familiar experience many have gone through.
Anagoth9@reddit
It must certainty does. I've been on one form of amphetamine or another for 10 years and have never taken more than my prescribed amount. I'm currently at 60mg of Vyvanse once daily and if I miss a dose it is pretty much just like OP describes.
Active_Jellyfish_710@reddit
Same. I sleep all day, I'm constantly craving some sorta food, and can't get myself to the shower even let alone sit down and focus on work. I'm on 50mg Adderall a day.
mementori@reddit
Same here
DogsDucks@reddit
I have been on ADHD meds for 20 years. I do not abuse them.
When I don’t take them there are no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever.
However, after going off of them for a while, I can retroactively see that I am more productive on them and my emotions are more regulated.
ULPT: find someone who works in a high volume restaurant kitchen. If no one has ADHD meds, they’ll definitely know where to get cocaine.
kilgoretrout1077@reddit
Yeah, I like how they make antidepressant discontinuation syndrome seem so mild. Meanwhile me stopping Prozac cold turkey cause it didn’t help and no one told me to not just stop taking it and ending up in the ER packed in ice because a fever of 104 for three days.
psam6@reddit
Prozac’s half-life is so insanely long that even after you stop cold turkey, you still have therapeutic levels in your system for weeks. Also, antidepressant discontinuation syndrome doesn’t cause fevers. It’s much more likely you came down with the flu or some other illness coincidentally around the same time you stopped the prozac. That said, it’s good you went to the ER, because a 104 fever for 3 days is pretty high for an adult.
Kind-Sheep@reddit
I experience withdrawals in the form of my moods becoming very unstable. I'm on a low dose of Adderall XR but I can be very sensitive to meds.
If I miss more than 2 days I'll become somewhat depressed
bubblesaurus@reddit
I just sleep like corpse
DogsDucks@reddit
I used to go on and off of it a lot like it was no big deal, until I noticed how much more stabilized my life was when I didn’t take long breaks from it.
Because initially it doesn’t feel that different, but then you notice, and it becomes more cumulative the longer you’re off.
It’s really unfortunate that it has any stigma when other antidepressants, the pharmacist will actually call you if you miss a refill and get worried.
hurtfullobster@reddit
Methylphenidate (Ritalin and Concerta) is not addictive (though can be habit forming if abused). It’s only the amphetamines (adderall, vyvanse) that are physically addictive. You can take methylphenidate indefinitely without problems at therapeutic doses, though you should take occasional breaks anyway.
Treadmillrunner@reddit
I don’t think that’s a relatively high dose. I was started on 50mg (2x 20mg slow release and 1x 10mg fast) and I’m not that adhd. Then it moved to 90mg. I don’t take it anymore thank god.
Edit: after looking back, maybe it was a high dose lol. I mean I did quit because I felt anxious a lot and couldn’t deal with my energy levels being so dependent on meds after a few years
DogsDucks@reddit
Interesting! Yeah, mine used to be 80 mg but I absolutely hated it, it made me feel jittery and horrible.
So I don’t think it’s an incredibly high dose, but it’s a little higher than average I thought? It’s interesting hearing about Other people’s experiences tho
Jonsnowlivesnow@reddit
I actually prefer to stop taking them for periods of time. Haven’t been on the meds since my son was born so I have quite the stockpile.
DogsDucks@reddit
I’m actually super fun and bouncy off them, like spontaneous dance parties and let’s blow the world’s biggest bubble- type attitude.
But they do help regulate focus and calm me down.

DogsDucks@reddit
Tiny amounts at a time, because I actually hate the way it feels so I have to taper it extremely carefully
AdRegular1647@reddit
This is how to proactively avoid issues.
goatausername42@reddit
That is very much so not true, lol. Maybe with drawling symptoms won't be as severe if not abused, but even if i stop taking my very low dose wellbutrin (an antidepressant) it takes about 3 days for me to start shaking, have a terrible migrane, and become extreamly irritable for no reason. I have taken this medication for quite a while, always taken on label, but I'll still get withdrawal symptoms.
When I was on Adderall, my Dr. specifically said not to d/c suddenly as there was a chance of withdrawal symptoms. When I stopped, we tapered the dose.
You can take a medication on label, as directed by a doctor, and your body become dependent on it.
Dizzy_Garlic_6388@reddit
I had bad Adderall withdrawal (like so bad I missed work) after a few months of regularly taking 5-10mg.

Few-Philosopher-4742@reddit
Important question.
Also what pharmacy do you use? I think CVS has a service where you pay a fee like $150 and they’ll write you an RX refill for something you’re taking.
I assume you’ve tried your PCP already. Try hopping on Zocdoc if you have the $. That’s been the easiest way in my experience as you’ll find psychiatrists or mds willing to write for meds psychotropic with availability in usually a few days.
Best_Market4204@reddit
what a rip off... it shouldn't cost that much at all.
FlashesOfColor@reddit
For a schedule 2 controlled medication, there is no way a CVS would write a script for that. The regulations on those are super strict. Maybe a MinuteClinic would write one, but I also doubt that.
HellzSouthernBelle@reddit
My suggestion is go to the pharmacy counter and get Sudafed ( the kind behind the counter with the ingredient pseudoephedrine ) . It’s sold OTC but controlled so you have to show your ID and sign for it. Also take stress vitamins( a blend of different B vitamins). This will help your brain pathways stop feeling frizzled. That will help you through the day until you can get refilled. It has always worked for me- been there! If worst comes to worst, the energy drink Bang (or any energy drink with branch chain amino acids) will help you through the day. I only drink 1/2 per day because a whole one is too much…

Usual-Ad-9554@reddit
everyone is different. quitting 40mg Adderall cold turkey after 1.5 years of taking daily as prescribed in 2017 absolutely caused me some pretty severe withdrawals that took me a couple months to feel leveled out and even then I didn't feel right bc I was not taking adhd medicine and I definitely should be. The tiredness and depression hit hard. I've also quit after daily use of 90mg in 2023 and honestly I felt my energy return after 3 weeks and I never felt any type of depression withdrawal. I was actively exercising and pushing the caffeine from the minute I woke up for those three weeks and could barely make it to sunset before passing out that first week and also the weather was amazing so that probably contributed to not feeling depressed like I had the first time.

Caffeine. Probably a fair bit of it.
I have ADHD. When this type of thing used to happen because of the stimulant shortage, I’d just play caffeine roulette. Sometimes it made me super tired, sometimes it made me super anxious, but sometimes it did exactly what my methylphenidate does.
My SO takes Adderall daily and when he runs out, he just drinks coffee until it helps.

Okay, that makes sense. When my friends had shortages, we just overnighted them in a breath mint tin. If the FedEx people asked what was being sent, we said it was a USB containing legal documents.

I had a friend who used to send heroin regularly circa 2010, via FedEx overnight. Like, probably hundreds of times. No special packaging or any clever ways of hiding it.
Never got caught a single time.
FWIW, this is my preferred sneaky method:
Carefully open a box of Gushers with a razor blade
remove a pack and open it carefully with razor blade
dispose of a few fruit snacks via your mouth, then add drugs to the open pack.
carefully reseal bag with super glue
add pack back into the box
carefully reseal box with super glue
Used this method to have a friend send me drugs into a rehab facility that carefully inspected mail.
If the drugs are stinky, use a smell-proof bag and vacuum seal it shut, then add it to the pack of Gushers.
Jicama_Minimum@reddit
The candle method worked well for smack back in my darkweb days. Your drugs are in vacuum sealed baggies in the middle of the candle. Considering I was a heroin addict, getting to the drugs at that point was not challenging in any way.
ElCamo267@reddit
Honestly, genius.
But I can't decide if sending you drugs while you're in rehab makes them not really a friend or a best friend.

Yeah. My best friend was an insurance adjuster in California after the Paradise fires & we’re from Texas so it was hard for her to get back to get refills.

I'm also ADHD, am on methylphenidate. Have gone into withdrawal before when unable to get my meds and it sucks.
It's not a huge help, but when I can't get my meds, caffeine pills help a little.
Also, if you ever need a reliable telehealth psych- I use Klarity. $69 per appointment, which isn't cheap, but I at least have the peace of mind that it's reliable.

I literally have gobs of them because I only end up taking them one to two times a week.

Great idea, lets feed the drug addict

Not unethical advice. Google behavioral urgent care. I got dumped by my provider because their practice abruptly decided to stop prescribing any “narcotic” we have a place in my city call Oliver Winston, and they are not only able to prescribe emergency prescriptions while you wait to get in with a new doctor, but also help place you with a health care provider.

I lost my normal perscriber some time ago, I've found a darkweb source that is cheap, quick, and reliable. DM me, I'll tell you which market, vendor, and how to access if you need. Just download Tor Browser, unless you Zocdoc someone local and pay out of pocket this is the quickest way.

Bro, take breaks. I have gone 2 weeks without them and I hate the memory loss and rambling but it makes them so much better when I get a refill

NOW Foods Energy tablets are helpful. Go to a natural foods store and buy an energy supplement. Call around and check in with local providers and see who may have sooner availability. Also check with the county mental health practice and local community clinics.

Sudafed, I took it the other day and it gave me a similar feeling to my 35mg xr adderall. If you’re having physical withdrawal symptoms you should go to urgent care.
Shabushabu0505@reddit
Go to the ER or Urgent Care. They have to see you immediately and they can write a script out for you.
GoldFrame8@reddit
No offense but you sound like an addict. Personally been struggling with debilitating adhd for years. Went the last 5 years without meds but got put back on them end of 2025. You need to mellow out. Yeah in a way the idea of going unmedicated is a little scary but at the same time….as a person that struggles with ADHD, as odd as this may sound…I actually struggle to take my meds. I want to feel better but sometimes I worry they will make me anxious and sometimes I simply forget my second dose. You sound like a straight up crack head.
kerodon@reddit
If you were getting withdrawal you were taking too high of a dosage just as a note. Use this next opportunity to drop the dosage. You can ask your doctor for an earlier visit if you mention its urgent. Withdrawal symptoms is pretty important. And it's not your fault for the improper dosage it's the previous providers.

There are lots of other telemed psychiatrists., If this is truly urgent, pay cash for the visit if it's out of network.
Dry-Mastodon6275@reddit
If you have a primary care physician they should be able to prescribe it just fine. Biggest issue is likely having to go see them in person once a month, but they changed the laws on prescribing controlled substances via telehealth, so we're fucked either way.
Other-Resort-2704@reddit
It depends on what state you live in about who can prescribe medications. Any physician as long as they have a current DEA number and current medical license for that state can write you a scribe.
In some states, you can have a psychiatric nurse practitioner write a script. So it could be easier for you to meet with a psychiatric nurse practitioner given there is a shortage of psychiatrists in many areas.
In some states, a dentist can even write a prescription for your ADHD medication.
You have to realize that the pharmacy is going to check the prescription closely given I know Adderall is a Class 2.

Try urgent care places. Try the pharmacy you used to get from sometimes they’ll do 5 day emergency fills probably only the vyvanse. Maybe not. Call around for next day psychiatrists.

We are on unethical life tips so here goes:
Have you thought about meth? Although you sound like the exact person to get addicted.
When I want a stimulant I go to Walgreens and get primatene tablets, they are ephedrine. I’ll take 2 of those and then take aspirin back and body. That has caffeine and aspirin. Back in the day bodybuilders would use this it’s called ECA ephedrine caffeine aspirin. The aspirin allegedly makes it a bit safer. It’s strong, it raises blood pressure and heart rate more than either in their own. I would absolutely avoid if there is any heart issues at all.
I’ve used that for a while, it’s awesome bc you don’t get hungry and are wired.

Not sure if you're the person who was asking about this on the dark net sub the other day, but you just have to wait.
Truth be told, you cannot verify what is safe for you to take unless it comes from a pharmacy. Even if you're buying from someone's grandma down the street, there is always a chance it's laced or tampered with. People suck.
What you're going through is an inconvenience, and I understand completely. It will make the next week suck. But it would suck way more to get some bunk product and potentially be harmed in the process. I don't know about you, but I'd rather be miserable for a week and a half than recover from a potential poisoning of sorts that could leave me with some form of internal damage that could take months to heal, if healing is possible.
