Very special episode about bootleg tapes
Anybody remember this one? I didn't know what a bootleg was, but thanks to Rerun and the gang (with a special appearance by the doobie brothers) I sure learned not to do it!

Me, I'd download a car if I could.

I used to love this show, too. I still do, but I used to, too.

I periodically will hunt down an episode it doesn't speak to me like it used to. Like Buck Rogers or Silver Spoons.

I don't take these after school specials seriously unless the main actor is stalker Channing.

I watched this recently and it was crazy to see the Doobies so young, especially Michael McDonald.

Ironically enough, Metallica developed an under ground following because of the demo that got passed around on Cassette tape, No Life to Leather.

Just think, all that bootlegging and now nobody has heard of the Doobie Brothers as a result. They could have had such a legacy and launched such promising solo careers if it weren't for folks taping their concerts.

I mean while other shows were having "special episodes" like Dudley getting touched, or drugs, or Edith getting SAed, the kids on What's Happening were protecting the music industry's copyright rights! Yeah, you go RERUN!. Also, WHY were the Doobie Brothers, who are as white as can be, on this show? I SERIOUSLY doubt that the characters would have been listening to them at all in 1978. As high schoolers in the East Coast they would have been all over Disco and Rap.
View on Reddit #75043198

Maryland_Bear@reddit

Minor point: it wouldn’t have been called “rap” then. I can’t pinpoint when that term entered common usage, but [*Billboard* didn’t call their chart Rap until 1989](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_R%26B/Hip-Hop_Songs). From July 1973 - June 1982, which covers the time *What’s Happening* was in first run, they called it the “Hot Soul Singles”.

Own_Tonight2145@reddit

I watch a documentary recently on what they now call “yacht rock” very interesting if a tad long ANYWAY many people said they never realized the Doobie Brothers were white until this episode because of the airplay on R and B radio stations.

Same thing with the Righteous Brothers. I thought they were black until they showed up on _Cheers_.

My middle class suburb wasp family loved What's Happenin' I was just thinking about this show the other day when a work colleague and I were talking about the old Tampa Bay Buc uniforms with the creamsicle colors. I remember Rerun was thought to be a football betting genius, but it turned out he was just betting on which team had the cooler looking uniforms.
View on Reddit #75046042

rimmo@reddit

I think it was Dwayne with the system, but Rerun did the betting.

And with the quality of that recorder, why would you even bother, especially through your jacket? I can't imagine the bootleggers could sell what sounds like a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of the album.

Part 1 of “Doobie or Not Doobie” aired January 28, 1978. The Doobie Brothers’ publicist was David Gest, who married Liza Minnelli in 2002. (Gest’s best man was Michael Jackson, and Elizabeth Taylor was maid of honor.) Here’s the ad for part 2, electric boogaloo: https://preview.redd.it/d7t03b85qdbg1.jpeg?width=171&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f90dc27cff4466444ed3f018532db1bcf12fc84b
