5080 Super out soon?
Posted by Royal-Ad9145@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 46 comments
I just read a few articles talking about the 5080 Super is set to bridge the gap between the previous gen’s 4090 or even equal to it in RAW power and comes with 24 gb VRAM. Not DLSS/AI stuff. Sounds exciting but what say y’all? Worth the wait? It’s set to be $1200 MSRP but yadayada we all know it ain’t gon be just that. 5090 is overkill but 5080 Super is the sweet spot for me at least.

Juat get a 7900xtx for 600$ lol
everydae24@reddit
Well.. that article you just read must be at least 3 months old.
The latest rumor has that Nvidia and AMD mmay either increase the price of the current GPUs or slow down production due to RAM shortage. Now, considering the recent change in RAM market, do you still believe Nvidia would release Super variances, which only major change would have been increased VRAM?

I know brother. Just askin’ for y’all. I’m moving to AM5 in the next two months.
Vault_Boof@reddit
Lol better be the next 2 days or you'll be paying twice as much in 2 months.
Royal-Ad9145@reddit (OP)
I intent to buy out parts in two phases. First will be RAM, CPU, MB, SSD and case, PSU etc in the next
_Flight_of_icarus_@reddit
Get the RAM, SSD and GPU first.
The rest should be much more stable when it comes to pricing.

If the 5080S has the same performance as a 4090 for 400 less MSRP that is a massive win. I love my 4090 and will run it into the ground. It's been going strong for a couple years now with nearly constant use.

Moscato359@reddit
I really doubt it will match the 4090
Royal-Ad9145@reddit (OP)
Btw, are you rocking a VHPWR or a 12v6? I DID NOT know these cables had VERY LITTLE “plug in/plug out” life cycle.
ElysiumXIII@reddit
I'm using the 600w high power cable that came with my power supply. I've been super careful with it making sure to hear that click when I need to reinstall the card.
It sucks the 50 series still has the same connector as the 40 series especially after all that drama with the melting.
Royal-Ad9145@reddit (OP)
True. Everybody recommends the 12v6, and I did use it at first and switched to VHPWR for simplicity’s sake.
ElysiumXIII@reddit
I feel that, I do pin some of the blame on user error for all the melting but seriously that lock on the connector is so iffy, it's almost squishy feeling and then sometimes it likes to not even click at all.
_Flight_of_icarus_@reddit
IIRC, technically all cable plugs are only rated for a relatively low number of mating cycles before they may no longer be in original spec.
In practice, it isn't really an issue on standard plugs - but the 12v6 is a flawed design that leaves less room for error - especially on the 4090/5090 with how much power is flowing through that cable.
Royal-Ad9145@reddit (OP)
I discarded the 12v6 and now rocking a VHPWR (600 watts)

The 5080 Super with definitely have the “DLSS/AI stuff”. That is their main selling point. Their software implementations are what make their cards superior.
gamesbrainiac@reddit
There will be no Supers this year.
calebisthinking1995@reddit
I was told not to build my system almost 6 months ago because the 5080 super was coming with more vram (I built a system with 5080) and I should wait for that.
In the pc building space never wait. Just get what you can afford or don’t. There will always be something better coming out later and the only real reason to wait is if you are 99% sure there’s a price drop coming. There indeed is not, prices are set to go up all through next year and we might not even get the super series.
If I had listened to that guy at Best Buy I’d still be waiting. Rammageddon is upon us and I would have been royally fucked by waiting. If you’ve got the money, now is always a good time to build. Sure looks to be better than the next few months we have coming.
SyFyFan93@reddit
This. I literally just dropped $450 for a 32gb DDR5 RAM kit yesterday.
Moscato359@reddit
Hahahha we don't know if nvidia even will make new consumer gpus in the future
Royal-Ad9145@reddit (OP)
Damn, so I just read some buushii article then.
Moscato359@reddit
We just don't know. Right now, they are pushing more and more production to business and not consumer, and the ram crisis doesn't look like it'll settle out until 2028 according to sk hynix
elstinkosupremeo@reddit
I'm always wary of any GPU using that 12 volt connector, but it'll be fun to see if it'll really stack up against a 4090 while costing less.
Moscato359@reddit
All gpu connectors are 12 volt
elstinkosupremeo@reddit
You know the ones I mean.
Moscato359@reddit
I do, I just was making a clarification
elstinkosupremeo@reddit
In my mind "12v connector" is synonymous with 12vhpwr, lol.
Moscato359@reddit
I understand why you would think that, but it's deceptive because the 8 pin and 6 pin connectors are also 12 volt.
Extra confusing... the 12vhpwr is 16 pins.
Royal-Ad9145@reddit (OP)
Damn man. That’s what scares me the most. Allocate 80-90% of a month’s salary on the xx80/xx90 GPU and then it burns, god forbid, takes out the whole system. That unpleasant experience sticks to you forever!
elstinkosupremeo@reddit
It's enough to deter me from buying any GPU that uses that connector personally, but not enough to stop me being curious how all these new cards perform
liqwood1@reddit
Nvidia already announced they are reducing video card production by 30-40% starting now.
So I highly doubt there will even be a super refresh, I would go as far as saying it would be highly unlikely.
Your best option right now is to either get a 5080 or try and find a 5090 at current MSRP.
Even 'if' they did do a super launch the prices would be obscene..
don-again@reddit
😂😂😂 where you been? Checked RAM/NAND memory prices lately? In all likelihood the 5000 series supers are canceled and the 5090 is gonna top 5k by the end of ‘26.
If you have to buy, buy now I’d say. And try to survive on whatever RAM you already have.
IrrelevantTale@reddit
Yeah the rumors were it coming out at the end of 2026 but ramagedddom Q4 last year has those plans being push back till the shortage os over.
Valor0us@reddit
It might not even happen. Have you been paying attention at all to Rammageddon?
Royal-Ad9145@reddit (OP)
Yes I have. The prices are getting outrageous to say the least. But it will get much much worse before it gets better my friend.
TattedUpSimba@reddit
And when it gets worse how does 24gb work for a 5080 super? To me that’s why the rumors aren’t always worth believing and you just gotta wait and see
U-1-mang@reddit
Not to mention if it does launch it will most likely be very limited and worse than 50 series launch due to its ai potential with 24gbs.
You might not even be able to reasonably buy one until 2027.
BidnessBoy@reddit
And if the 5090 get a price increase, you can almost guarantee that a hypothetical 5080S would slot into the $1500-$2000 MSRP range
BidnessBoy@reddit
Given the issues with RAM supply, and with the rumor being that the 50XX super cards would be simple VRAM upgrades, I honestly wouldnt hold my breath on these cards coming out soon if at all
notainotbot@reddit
lol what articles are you reading ?
there are no super cards coming out. super cards is mostly about more vrams and less about increased clocks.
and have you been in loop with the memory prices ?
SteelBallRan@reddit
I could be wrong but the last time i read up on this - the Super series are delayed to end of this year?
