BMW Alpina looks to take a leaf out of the Mercedes-Maybach book, with BMW's new subbrand devoted to luxury devotees.

Alpina was a car manufacturer in their own right. They used BMW cars as basis, but had their own VINs and the cars were labelwd Alpina B7 or such. Now they will just be optioned up BMWs.

I don’t know about them being a complete independent - as BMW USA had been selling the B7 for awhile now, as a BMW.

I'm not sure what deal they had for the US, but in Germany the manufacturer listed on the title was Alpina for decades. While you had Schnitzer BMW 5xx, Alpina was always Alpina B5 or such.
