I promised my ex that I wouldn't drink for the 15 years it would take us to pay off the house. That was over 15 years ago. She left a little over a year ago. The house is paid off. I still haven't had a drink despite having a few unopened bottles of my favorite bourbons in the basement since before the promise.

It's a poison and I don't fool myself about that, but I really enjoy the bite it has from time to time. Fortunately I don't not drink in excess. I can't remember the last time I had a hangover. Its been months since I had more than 2 drinks in a single day and many more months than that that I've had more than 3 in a week. I confronted my dad recently about his/his friends/my uncles/aunts/etc functional alcoholism past (pervasive in my childhood but didn't really 'get it'. he's nearly alcohol free now--maybe a drink every several months. It's weird because I grew up in a "shot and a beer" polish American family and I can finally see the heavy/frequent drinking behavior normalization going away.

In the USA, there are three FDA approved drugs for treating alcohol use disorder (AUD): disulfram (Antabuse - makes you sick if you drink), acamprosate (Campral, reduces physical cravings), and Naltrexone (reduces euphoric/dopaminergic effects of alcohol). All have their uses and can be highly effective, but there’s no “magic pill” to cure alcoholism, as addiction is a complex disease. A strong recovery program usually combines medication with education as well as clinical and social support. I only miss the taste of bourbon, but my wife gets me enough bourbon hinted things to make up for it. It’s hard to describe being an alcoholic to a non-alcoholic but basically for my whole life the second I would start drinking a switch would flip and I wouldn’t be able to stop, it feels completely powerless. After I started microdosing that desire went away, now I feel like what a normal person (presumably) feels like with alcohol- I could take it or leave it. Pre-mushrooms I physically could not have just one drink, it would always turn into drinking to pass out - now I can just have one, but most times I’m just not even interested. Fascinating stuff really. I also had a problem with binge eating and that also went away.

Just going to throw it out there, I’m an alcoholic and an addict and I had an eating disorder as well. I get the tendency to feel like the right drug or combination of drugs will fix the problem, but that’s sticky territory for a lot of us. I’m so so stoked you found something that works for you, but that’s super hard to do for a lot of people with addiction problems, it was for me. (Micro-dosing becomes “if a little bit is good, more must be better” kind of thing. This is how Matthew Perry died if we need an example of the potential negatives) It was quite difficult but I did eventually get sober and develop a better relationship with food, and I’ve been that way since 2015. So it’s possible to get to the same destination without chemical assistance. Not necessarily saying that to you, more to any observer it might apply to.

I know it sounds woo woo, but it somehow changes your perception of yourself, of your relationship with substances, of the world and your place in it, etc For me, it reminds me of how incredible the natural world is. But that's my own experience. But it's incredibly healing. I spend a few hours staring at the sky, trees, other plants, and smiling and laughing. Just so you know, as long as you stick to tryptamines (psilocybin mushrooms, LSD) you will pass any drug screening unless they are specifically looking for it. Your body's enzymes will almost certainly have broken down the molecules by test time since psilocybin's molecular structure is so close to serotonin. They would need to take an actual blood draw, while you were tripping, and then send it to a lab with a GC/MS machine and the engineer operating the machine would still need to have an idea of what drug they are looking for to compare your results to the sample result in the library. And even then, LSD is undetectable in body fluid two hours after ingestion, and psilocybin/psilocin are likely close behind due to the aforementioned enzymes. If it's good for your mental health, fuck the backwards ass laws. Your mental wellbeing is the most important thing in your life.

Yes I buy mine from mamadose - they are able to sell psilocybin via religious exemption. My microdose is 200mg of PE and I take it 3-4 times per week, usually the days I work. I prefer golden teacher for my macrodose and do that every few months. I have a trauma therapist that is non-judgmental on my psilocybin use and am able to work through my old shit with her after I do the inner work with larger doses. I have struggled with my mental health and addiction since I was 15 so it feels nothing short of miraculous to have achieved the level of healing just from plant medicine. Super grateful and thankful.

0.2 grams (200mg) is a world away from a 2g or 4+gram dose. Like you, I've also never regularly microdosed but I have taken normal (1g-3.5g up to absolutely colossal doses like splitting an oz with my friend back in the day. 0.2g will almost certainly not cause the tryptamine anxiety come up that a larger dose would. You could also try pre dosing with a small 0.5mg-1mg benzo to help keep things calm. Then there is the Phenethylamine class of psychedelics such as MDA, MDMA, Mescaline, and the 2c-x group. I find these to be way easier to deal with and are almost impossible to have a bad trip unless you take way too much. The flip side of that is they don't go nearly as deep as tryptamines (DMT, Mushrooms, LSD) so it's more like "soul candy" than "soul food" to make a terrible analogy.

Microdosing has changed my life in innumerable ways, of course everyone is different and not all experiences are the same. But I am a true believer in the power of the plant medicine after my personal life experience with them. Cured my alcoholism and disordered eating, treats my depression and anxiety better than anything big pharma ever prescribed, but combining the trauma therapy paired with microdosing has been transformative for me.

You can go about daily life on a microdose, I feel generally happier and less bothered by everything, but able to work and make decisions and drive and whatnot. There are vendors in the US that were able to take advantage of the “Freedom of Religion” act and offer psilocybin via religious freedom as it’s a spiritual experience. I buy mine from Mama Dose. The dosing has been more intuitive/trial and error. I am fortunate to have a therapist that is non judgmental on my mushroom use and I have been able to heal decades old trauma due to this.

I'm experiencing that a bit now. Most of my new and fit friends in a new place I moved to don't drink at all. I drank too much and have cut back. It's straight-up boring. Of course, fun can be had without alcohol. I'm not dumb. But there is also a reason it's been associated with good times since people started writing about good times. I was recently at a big party/ceremony for a sport that my fiancé competes in. These people don't drink, basically, but they love weed. There was an AMAZING and well-known band who was only there because the front man also participates in said sport. By the time they came on, 80% of the people had gone home, and it was low-energy and embarrassing. That could've, should've, and in my younger years with my crowd, would've been a party for the ages.

Yes I still drink but how I drink is different. A lot less bars and way more dinner parties and game/movie night situations. I enjoy sipping high end tequila (Ocho, Fortaleza, etc) and good wine. There is a big social element to this also. I still get pretty toasty but I rarely get wasted like in my 20s. I also drink beer but less and less. I rarely get hangovers anymore (maybe once per year). I'm sure the research says I drink enough to negatively impact my health but my life is for living and I really enjoy imbibing high quality tequila.

I ultimately concluded the lack of shades of grey might be a cultural difference. Pretty much where I’m at. About 12 years ago I was a home brewer with investment seed money considering launching a brewery. Glad we didn’t go forward. As I’ve aged, I just don’t like how I feel after heavy drinking and honestly, it’s not even a conscious thought- I just don’t ever just crave a drink. Have one maybe at one meal once every few weeks. The part of my brain that wants alcohol or finds it enjoyable is shut off. While not clinically proven, I believe that it’s a side effect of GLP meds. The last time I had a drink was six months ago, and all I could taste was heat and couldn’t finish it. I do, but in moderation. I enjoy higher end bourbon, tequila and armagnac for their flavors and less for the effect. I may have a 2 Oz pour a few times during the winter. Rarely during the summer. I'll have a glass of wine or 2 with a good meal, a cold beer after a hike or while out 4wheeling on occasion, maybe a few more if were camping in the summer. I might break my rules for a fun wedding with an open bar and dance all night but I dont " get drunk" on purpose any more. Never started, I only drink when out for tacos or at a nice dinner. I may buy a six pack that will last me weeks, but that's usually non-alcoholic. I hate that swimming head feeling and too many male relatives almost became alcoholic, so I decided not to even risk it. On top of that I am extremely sensitive to caffeine, to the point that if I have caffeine after 12pm I will be up for at least 12-15 hours afterwards.

I'm one of those rare people of our age that never really drank a lot. My mom's mother, I never really knew her so I won't call her grandma, was a heavy drinker and was very somehow abusive to my mom. My mom doesn't talk about it so I don't know if it was verbally or physically. But we never had alcohol in our house until I was much older in my mid to late teens. And then it was just a beer now and then or a bottle of wine. So alcohol is never really been a big thing for me. I went a little crazy in my late teens and very early twenties when I moved very close to the Mexican border but even then I got over it real quick. If I have five or six drinks a year that's a good amount for me.

I know what you mean, but I would suggest that this is where shared interests come in. Today, I am bored by conversations with drinkers. They quickly become banal and drunk people cannot usually keep up with serious discussions about things that interest me. I have good friends coworkers who still drink, and I bail after they get a buzz. I don’t need to hear their passionate, partially thought out arguments, or deal with their inability to respond to my comments and actually add to the conversation. I have way more fun talking about my personal and professional interests with sober people, than I do with drinkers. Note that I don’t include the “one or two beers” crowd with “drinkers.” They’re essentially the same as sober people to me.

I had a bottle of champagne on NYE, sometimes I'll pick up a 6 pack of Mike's hard lemonade....there's a local brewery that makes a really good shandy every summer so I usually grab at least a few of those....there's a store a few miles from me that has an impressive selection of beer, cider, and wine, and they sell can/bottle singles, so if I see something that sparks my interest i can try it without having to commit to a whole 6 pack. That being said, I don't remember the last time I got *drunk*, I typically only have one or two drinks at a time these days.

Quit 5 months ago. I worked in adult bev for almost 2 decades so it was always available and free. Maybe had a beer or two 5-6 days a week with the occasional heavier days. Found out I was going to be a Dad and quit my job and quit drinking. It wasn’t causing problems in my life, but the extended periods I wouldn’t drink throughout the year would always leave me feeling that I wanted to give it up because I just felt better. I just loved the taste of bourbon and beer and the social aspect that came with it. I do drink a few Guinness NA’s a few times a week.

I pretty much stopped drinking alcohol for all but rare social events midway through college. My old roommate started drinking heavily after he moved in with siblings and eventually he dropped out. Ever since, it’s been only rare social events that I find it worthwhile to drink. Usually it’s with work-related parties, maybe every 6 months, but only then since drinking was expected. Even so, I’d always avoid drinking-heavy events. Since then, I’ve changed jobs and never found a reason to either drink or attend those type of events. I’ve typically had far more responsibilities than my peers and drinking doesn’t help me do those tasks. It affects your ability to drive, legally work while under influence, and I don’t like the thought of drinking in front of my kids. And $ and calories. Just too many negatives when there are other thinks to drink.

I think a big change is that people accept someone not drinking without pushing the issue now. 15 years ago I had tricks like ordering a drink I hated or refilling a beer bottle with water, so I could always have a drink in hand to stop ppl pushing me to order something. The hangover thing blows my mind also but for different reasons. I've never had hangovers. I've definitely had points in my life where I was a problem drinker... but i never had hangovers... Because my body has never let me drink enough to get hung over. If I have enough that I'm just past buzzed, I am violently ill. I physically can't take in the amount of alcohol required to get hung over. Probably also why I am still a drinker - compared to others, my levels have always had to be moderate. So I've never had hangovers as a motivator. The fact that I get so sick after a few probably indicates something, but I've never had a health care professional give a shit beyond simply telling me to not drink period without absorbing what I'm actually telling them.

So I started getting crazy hangovers just because of peri menopause, which was like curtailed my drinking but also can I please have something I enjoy in moderation without feeling like garbage. Anyways. I recently heard about taking a Pepcid before drinking, lo and behold if I do that I can have a few drinks and not feel like complete ass the next day! In fact no hangover symptoms at all. It’s fuckin crazy.

Didn't start until my 30s, and I still do! Never more than two at a work event, and we have a house rule of no drinking if we're stressed or sad. With those parameters it's never become a problem. Kinda like junk food, not great for everyday but fun to enjoy once in a while.

I drink a couple beers a month. I love NA beer. I hate how alcohol makes me feel. I started tapering down, very unintentionally, around the time I became a parent 5 years ago. I just found that my energy was zapped constantly and drinking real beer zapped it even more. Now the only reason I would ever drink the real stuff is if I was craving beer and we were out of NA, or maybe if I had a real doozy of a day. I can't remember the last time I finished a full 12 oz beer, though. I partied hard in my 20s (but not the hardest - probably average of 1.5 drinks a day with a good number of 3-4 drink nights scattered in). In my 30s I never managed to average more than 1 drink a day and then just started tapering. Lone Star used to make a beer called 24/7 that was 2.4% alc. That was my jam. I guess there wasn't a sufficient market. I miss it and would drink it if it ws available!

I don't drink often, because it just doesn't fit in most of my life and work. I do enjoy it though when the opportunity presents itself, like on vacation. For similar reasons, I don't use marijuana at all. I'm subject to random drug testing and it's not worth losing my livelihood over. I've had people explain all the ways they get around testing, but that all sounds like a lot of work. I don't wanna smoke weed THAT bad. Really, nicotine is my bane. It's the only thing I can't just pick up and put back down when it suits me. Nothing else has ever grabbed me like that.

I love a glass of prosecco or champagne, so yes, I still drink, but usually just one day per week, and maybe 2-3 drinks. Rarely, a fancy cocktail or gin and tonic in the summer. Funny how time changes things. In my 20s, I drank like a fish and loved making cocktails but didn’t have the money to stock a bar. Ever since the start of this decade, I have been drinking far less. If there's a special occasion, I will have a few drinks and once in a while will have a few at home. It's a combination of becoming a parent, being more self-aware of the long-term health effects, the costs and a lot of reflection on how I used to be. In my late 20s and early 30s I drank a lot and it often brought out my worst insecurities. I also do not want my children to have any exposure to alcohol at their ages.

I quit when i was 36, im 46, and this year will be 10 years without drinking. I drank a lot back in the day. People do realize how bad it is for you. And the way they market it makes it seem its not that bad for you. If you decide to quit, you will notice a big difference after a month. You dont feel like crap in the morning. you're not tired. You can actually get up in the morning. I dont miss the days i was hungover. Take it one day at a time. Hoping tje best for you, you got this.

The past couple of years have been a brutal reminder for me. My best friend in high school hit a bad stretch and the pull of small-town partying was something he could never get away from. I was back in my hometown for my grandfather's funeral and chatting with another friend about my bestie from back in the day. He was in liver failure from his partying. I had just left my adopted hometown the week before, ending it with ANOTHER funeral. It was a coworker and friend (and my hand picked replacement for the job I was leaving) who had struggled with alcohol and took his own life in the parking lot at work. It was a brutal stretch. I wanted to go see my best friend from high school and ask him how he was doing. Touch base and let him know I was thinking about him. But I didn't and I regretted it. I flew back and the next day, the friend I was talking to called me. My bestie took his own life. He got the news that he was not a candidate for a liver transplant and that was it. He decided to end things. Two months later, my wife's friend from childhood was in hospice for liver failure. She passed away not long after. And to top it off, my mother's heart decided to give out on her. She was a lifelong drinker, but cigarettes were the main knife. She passed away last December. 2024 was the most brutal year of loss personally that I've had. This year, after an up-and-down year with alcohol personally (I quit for 5 months, then we had my mother's delayed memorial and it hasn't been great since) I have made better choices and habits around my craft beer habits, but I want more. I actually started a GLP-1 this morning and I'm quitting again in the new year, which will also help my weight. In short - I'm sure many of us have a bad relationship with alcohol, but 2024 was borderline abusive for me and it was time to stop.

My wife quit cold turkey last year because she felt she was overly relying on numbing herself to the world around her. I still enjoy craft beer, so I'd rather have 1 or 2 and savor them rather than pounding beers to get buzzed. Actually I don't really get an enjoyable buzz from alcohol anymore, especially daydrinking. If I have a random drink during the day, I can feel my blood pressure going up and just feeling on edge.

I was on ozempic for about 2 years and it totally cut my desire to drink. I was a 2 or 3 beer and bourbon a night guy. Like 3/4 times a week. I’ll still have a beer or bourbon every some often, and yes I’ll enjoy beers sitting in the yard, but it’s not the crazy desire that i used to have. I wasn’t a big drinker and I am in an industry that drinks. I was also raised by a family who saw nothing wrong with a child drinking either. Jokes about holding your liquor was common. But also I was taught how to drink. Well in my 40’s I had to stop because my body said nope! I get major joint pain and stiffness and the drunk feeling would last 2 days. I had a glass of wine on New Year’s Eve because my 14 year old wanted to give it a try. My husband doesn’t drink. I’ve been doing NA wine before and now my kid realized she’s not a drinker. So we are a NA household. And also I woke up with stiffness in my hands from that one glass of wine. At least I will save money.

I can’t handle wine or sweet drinks at all. I feel immediately terrible. Just straight to hangover. I can handle a beer every once in a while and low sugar cocktails. I definitely experience the inflammatory effects and don’t want the empty calories either. I don’t even catch a nice buzz. It’s not really fun anymore and the negative side effects are more pronounced, so I don’t really see a point any longer.

I still do. I have vertigo issues I take meds for so anything THC-based makes me vibrate and feel like I might be on the verge of having an attack. It's not "relaxing" whatsoever. Alcohol gives me that same warm, tipsy feeling that weirdly doesn't affect me like weed does. So I still stick to that as my vice here & there.

OP, I stopped after my 40th, too. I had been sober from January of that year until my birthday in March. A couple of girlfriends rented a house on the ocean to celebrate…and brought alcohol. Knowing that I was sober for 2 1/2 months. I succumbed, It ended badly, including ending the friendships of 25-30 years with these two. I have been sober for almost 4 years now and my life has never been better. I got my depression under control. I found a sober partner. Life is good.

I was never a big drinker. These days I usually only drink a glass of wine if I’m with friends or having a nice meal out, but since I have to drive back home after I limit myself. Sometimes I’ll have cocktails on vacation. I live alone and it feels weird to me to have drinks on my own at home so months can go by where I don’t drink alcohol at all.

I quit over five years ago, and I’m immensely proud of that. I drank too much, but it never stopped me from doing all the things that people mark as success metrics, so no one ever said anything about it. It was still too much. I wasn’t the best version of myself, and I wasn’t showing my kid how to handle life unadulterated. When I quit, I realized I hadn’t learned how to handle life either. I had had the behavior modeled to me that if you are happy or sad or proud or anxious or whatever, you didn’t sit with those big feelings. You got rid of them by drinking or somehow else. Any feeling, good or bad, was to be suppressed if it got to be more than like a four on a scale of one to ten. So when I quit, I had to learn how to be okay feeling things. My big surprise was that it was hard to accept feeling even positive things. Anyway that’s a ramble of way more than you asked. No, I don’t drink; my husband barely drinks, and now that we are in our forties even a single beer makes his little tummy hurt lol

I’m now a very moderate drinker, normally 1-2 days a week only and at most 2 drinks. Often just 1. Holidays and special occasions might have a bit more. Recently read the feel-good effects plateau after 2 drinks so there’s really no point to drink more. Expensive and makes you feel crap! I enjoy a cocktail or wine/beer enough to appreciate it when I do.

Nope. Used to spend all but 1 paycheck a month on booze from 18-24 and almost quit cold turkey. Daughter was born and thought it better. I have had 2 drinks all year in 2025, June 30th and Dec 23. That is how little I drink. I do however, have 1 small and 1 large bottle of Jack Daniels (gifts from a customer) and 2 bottles or Bourbon which were gifts from our sales team. I also have 4 bottles in the freezer that are open, Morgan, Fireball, Crown and Southern Comfort.

I do, occasionally. I was never a heavy drinker, but I homebrew fruit wines and meads as a hobby. The time and patience required to make my own tends to build in some moderation. I harvest cherries from my tree in July and the wine isn't really ready until Thanksgiving (cherry wine, fresh ginger, dijon, and maple syrup makes a FANTASTIC ham glaze btw). I'm generally too cheap to go *buy* alcohol, except I sometimes get a bottle of scotch for birthday/christmas. Which, again, is not something you drink a lot of at once.

Quit in 2008 after realizing it was making my anxiety a million times worse and I was unable to slow down. The last day was when I told myself I wasn’t going to drink a lot as I was starting a new job. I drank a bottle of wine that night, and then had a panic attack in the parking lot of my new job my first day and swore to my husband I was done. I haven’t drank since. I do drink NA beers now and enjoy them. It’s annoying how many good beers have come out since then since I like the IPA variety but there are more NA versions now and it’s fun to find them. Plus now I have bad migraines and I’m sure alcohol would make them way worse too. Just not worth it.

Started tapering my drinking Dec 26, 2020 as a guy who loved hazy IPAs and big, chewy imperial stouts. I wanted to pursue being healthier and in better shape. The more I got into bodybuilding the less I wanted alcohol. Mid September 2025 I decided the flavor wasn’t that great anymore, the feeling after wasn’t either, and knowing it stunts gains and the calories are useless I decided I was done drinking. I don’t miss it. I’ve also never used THC in any of its forms or any other drug excluding alcohol. I’m good with that.

Yeah I did the Uno reverse deal, I quit drinking in 2019 but then took up smoking weed, which I had never done outside of a few times in college which ended poorly… but it really wasn’t a conscious attempt to substitute one for the other. I was never a daily drinker, but when I did drink it was like I was back in college…. I just drank too much in one evening. And as I got older my body didn’t like that. It also didn’t help my marriage. When kids entered the picture, I had to clean it up. I always promised my wife that our children would never see me drunk. They were still young enough when I was drinking, that I can keep that promise. By then it was only a handful of times and they were always asleep. But waking up hung over and having to deal with babies and toddlers? No way. So yeah, sober for almost 7 years now

I have pretty much stopped drinking but if it’s going to be something I want to do (like vacation with friends and pina coladas pool side) I have to be hydrated like a champ, take emzymes and an anti-histamine. Aside from partying in college I was always a fairly light drinker. That has tapered down to nothing now at 42; not as a conscious thing, but just because my body rejects it almost entirely. I get terrible hangovers after even 1 or 2 light beers, regardless of my hydration level, food intake, etc.
