ive been thinking about traveling to the balkans for my senior trip, any suggestions?

I mainly want to go to albania but are there any other countries you might recommend to travel to? as well as this, is there any advise for safety and/or restrictions to these countries?
North_Register_8435@reddit
Im a travel agent from the Balkans so just text me here on reddit i’ll show you at least where to go
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
Must see, but it heavily depends when are you going (what time of the year).
Montenegro:
- Kotor Bay + Cetinje/Lovcen
- Durmitor / Zabljak national park (if it's winter or late spring)
Croatia:
- Dubrovnik & nearby places (Cavtat for example)
Bosnia:
- Mostar
- Sarajevo
Macedonia:
- Ohrid is a must
Romania:
- Bucharest
Serbia:
- Belgrade if you like night life (I would avoid it during winter though)
pluto-lite@reddit
Nothing comes close to Greece in this part of Europe tbh.
OkHoneydew1599@reddit
Greek food is more than fine. Tourists go to the most touristy restaurants in Athens and still get excited
Zynther01@reddit
As a Bulgarian, I would suggest Bucharest or Cluj for a city break. If you do make it to Bulgaria - aim for natural beauty / national parks / monasteries.
Sofia is cool but Bucharest takes the cherry.
Plovdiv (Bulgaria) is definitely worth visiting if you’re a history buff
Mechanical_Spindle@reddit
Where are you from?
lebron73711@reddit (OP)
louisiana💔
qosjaZ@reddit
Skip Albania bro. Not going to regret
Sea-Picture2213@reddit
Haha why the broken heart?
lebron73711@reddit (OP)
idk people just usually hate on people from southern US for some reason🤷♂️
Sea-Picture2213@reddit
Us Balkaners don’t judge only elitists judge
Source: I grew up/live in NYC
Mechanical_Spindle@reddit
No hate, just to understand if you are from another Balkan or EU country.
Well, I will propose some I've been in the past and of course Greece (were I'm from): Albania (especially the ⛱️), Serbia (they have very good meat, if you like, and Novi Sad & Nis are interesting places), Croatia is also very beautiful. From Bulgaria I'll propose only Sofia.
Rynchinoi@reddit
No no no no no, Washington DC is the problem, not Louisiana 😁
New_Accident_4909@reddit
Are you black? If so cling to bigger towns. We are not racist that much but people from small towns tend to be insensitive to a way that may offend black people.
That plus we do have some idiots who are obviously racist.
qosjaZ@reddit
Honestly skip Albania go to Greece
QuietQueerRage@reddit
Transylvania, in Romania, is quite beautiful imo, and people are nice.
MiserableDude66@reddit
My suggestion, don’t.
liumbiwe@reddit
We Bulgarians love our country, but I’m gonna say you should go and see Montenegro, not Budva, not the capital, go to the mountains its a paradise.
SE_prof@reddit
You don't want to visit Greece for the food...?
Durim187@reddit
Great triangle of Greece, Albania, Montenegro and Macedonia. All close to each other, can see a lot of places in a short span. Fly to Grece then bus to Macedonia, to Kosovo, Ulcinj of Montenegro, end up in Albania so you can catch a flight from Tirana out
TheSamuil@reddit
The Bulgarian would naturally suggest Bulgaria, but if you are set on Albania I will suggest a day trip to North Macedonia, Ohrid in particular. It's not that far and the area is quite nice
SignificantMeet8747@reddit
Bulgarian here as well, I'd add Bucharest and Belgrade to the list. Greece is definitely a must especially during late spring/summer/early autumn and the Northern side is quite close
Durim187@reddit
Bucharest, Belgrade are too far away from Albania, Macedonia, not worth the hasle
Unusual_Detective420@reddit
You can also visit the albanian side of Ohri. Pogradec, tushemisht and Lin are particularly nice. Korca is also super worth it if you are in the region.
bremmmc@reddit
It depends where you're from. If you've built up at least some street smarts in your local area, you'll be safe anywhere.
Purple_Bee_3286@reddit
Croatian coast is beautiful,a bit on the expensive side. You know they filmed Game of Thrones there? (Dubrovnik city).
Ohrid lake is very nice in North Macedonia.
Baščaršija in Sarajevo is very unique.
Belgrade is nice and alive.
Greece is also Balkan,so I don't have to mention how beautiful greek islands are...
Also worth mentioning, Balkan, although not very rich is very safe place to visit.
Much safer than Western Europe...Let's not pretend,it's because we don't have that many illegal immigrants from third world countries.
Especially if you are stranger (for example Western) Europe or North America. You will have a great time here and no one will dare to rob you or sell you some bracelet or something...
Most of our crime is very organized ,and not some lowlife pickpockets who target tourists...
Come here and enjoy...
theUnahonkler@reddit
Just returned from Belgrade. Highly recommend it, had a fantastic time and felt totally safe there. I can also recommend my country Greece, but note that I found Belgrade way more organised, especially in terms of public transport, and Belgrade's city centre was way safer than Athens'. However, if you are into ancient history Greece is a must.
New_Accident_4909@reddit
O my fucking God there is a town that is worse then Belgrade that it's public transport appears good?!
theUnahonkler@reddit
Apparently Thessaloniki. Athens is a mess too, but has more options for transport.
New_Accident_4909@reddit
Well you are always welcome in Belgrade ❤️
theUnahonkler@reddit
Appreciate that, will definitely be back. Wish you a happy new year!
New_Accident_4909@reddit
Likewise, all the best in 2026!
Aristo95@reddit
Bro if you found Belgrade's public transport more organised, I can honestly only send some hugs to you. I feel so sorry for ya
theUnahonkler@reddit
Seriously, I returned to my hometown and I immediately regretted taking the bus to get back home. Not to add that we pay a fare for this shitty service.
No_Delay3465@reddit
Athens is probably the most “unsafe” capital of the Balkans, but even while being so, it is safer than most European big cities still
jdm_rules@reddit
if you use common sense athens is totally fine
Flat_Attention8639@reddit
Albania is nice especially the south - beach area. I would add Slovenia (Bled Lake, Ljubljana) and Montenegro (Kotor, Budva).
8_bit_femboy@reddit
I would avoid albania like the plague. Never have been to the beaches, apparently theyre nice, but ive been to other towns, and would never go back again. Montenegro, slovenia i agree
kajokarafili@reddit
For a femboy, albania is not for you and we don't want you.
For a normal person,it's good.
8_bit_femboy@reddit
Albanian culture is more similar to indian chaos, than European order. Driving in albania especially is like driving in a fucking third world country. Crime is rampant. Prices are high. Just would not reccomend. And i wouldnt say this for any other european country AND IVE VISITED THEM ALL. ALL OF THEM. I ONLY NOT RECCOMEND ALBANIA
AlbanianCatholic@reddit
"Crime is rampant"
Lowest Robbery rates in Europe.
Safety walking at night.
Some of the lowest assault rates in Europe.
Really low rates for any other form of theft.
I have no problem leaving my bag in a restaurant and going to Church for Mass, knowing I'll find everything in tact when I return.
Flat_Attention8639@reddit
I have been to Durres during summer and God, you know how to party! Cheap, felt pretty safe, good food and service at restaurants.
Consistent_Bake_5428@reddit
I’ve been to Albania in 2014 and saw a goat on the road, a chair on the road, and people using a roundabout as if it was a crossroad. 🤷🏼♀️
CrowNo7009@reddit
seems 100% like serbia :)
you would feel at home
Heyonit@reddit
🤣🤣
TheSlav87@reddit
Croatia is known to have the best beaches
AlbanianCatholic@reddit
Since you're visiting Albania, I'd also suggest Kosovo. Lots of places to visit, similar culture, educative experience, beautiful mountains (both Kosovo and Albania are a hiker's gem, but far from limited to that alone.), respect for tourists, etc.
Wish you a splendid time!
looking4somehoes@reddit
Watch out for mines
lebron73711@reddit (OP)
are the mines truly a bigger problem there?
AlbanianCatholic@reddit
They're trolling you.
There are no mines in Albania.
Only country in the Balkans with remaining mine problems is Bosnia, although that too is doing much better in that regard now.
skyduster88@reddit
No. Only in Bosnia.
looking4somehoes@reddit
Idk man there are no mines in Turkey maybe there are still some in Bosnia etc.
silentmarrow@reddit
only deep in the woods, and not everywhere lol. It’s marked
looking4somehoes@reddit
Lol so you're marking it but not removing it?
silentmarrow@reddit
well thanks to Ottoman Empire who devolved balkans, we have problems like these 😍 say Thank you to your ancestors for me
looking4somehoes@reddit
You're welcome but there were no mines during the Ottoman period, so this is the result of your own pissing contest :D
silentmarrow@reddit
Never said there were, I just said that the reason balkan countries are years behind and lacking everything is the ottoman empire
dcdemirarslan@reddit
If that makes you sleep better at night then yes it was all ottomans fault.
that_one_retard_2@reddit
50% of the people on this sub are Turkish nationalists. Jabs like these won’t get far, even if they somewhat make sense, you’ll still be in the negatives with the upvotes
civodar@reddit
Nope virtually all have been removed. You can look up mine deaths and injuries per year for the countries you’re planning on visiting. It should be 0-1 per year or something at this point
No-Example-5107@reddit
Yes, mines are a problem if you go inside without authorisation. You’ll probably just be escorted out, but there’s still a risk of being sued for trespassing.
HuckleberryUpbeat518@reddit
Only in some remote locations where it wasn't economically reasonable to remove them. If you stick to popular tourist destinations you won't have a problem.
that_one_retard_2@reddit
I assume you’re joking, because why would they go wandering through random remote Bosnian fields. Those areas are signaled with signs too, afaik. @op that’s really not a concern, wtf
AthensGlow@reddit
Beaches and history and 1 1/2 weeks. Take a tour of the Peloponesse. Thats it man, does not get better. You can probably also fit Athens for a couple of days to visit the Acropolis and maybe even Delphoi.
MendiWTF@reddit
For cheap prices, excellent food and one of the most welcoming people I'we met I'd recommend Republic of Kosova. Prizeren, Prishtina, Peja, Rugova Valley. Albanian coast is a must see. Montenegro coast is a joy for your eyes. Places around Lake Ohrid between Albania and North Macedonia is lovley as hell. Good luck on your travels, I bet you'll have a great time no matter where you choose your destination.
East_Concert4950@reddit
What ever you do , you have to come and visit Ćaciland. It's a must.
bebo117722@reddit
the Balkans have so much to offer, from stunning coastlines in Montenegro to the rich history of Serbia, you can’t go wrong exploring this region for your trip
Good_Composer_8409@reddit
Bosnia is nice.
ProductGuy48@reddit
What do you mean maybe not for the food? Greek food is amazing!
Interesting-Ant-6726@reddit
Balkan is safer than western europe
Asaioki@reddit
As a West European driving the first time into the Balkans (Slovenia, Croatia?) I was greeted by something I have never seen in the West. A car driver getting out of his car, taking a baseball bat from the trunk and smashing a truck's front grill.
Sure, that's annecdotal, but it has stayed with my impression of the Balkans.
No_Delay3465@reddit
I often think about this, I have forgotten my valuables or phone many times in bars or restaurants (I’m clumsy af) in Tirana and everything always stays right where you’ve left it even hours later. You blink once in a crowded street in Barcelona or Berlin and suddenly you’ll find your pockets empty
WorldsBestTroll@reddit

Facts
Wardonius@reddit
Serbs prefer western Europe over Serbia...
Consistent_Bake_5428@reddit
Only if you’re after money. I never felt safer in Western Europe than in the Balkans (F36, who can walk in a major Balkan city in the night without pepper spray)
apeaky_blinder@reddit
Curious, where in western Europe are we talkin about?
Consistent_Bake_5428@reddit
I did have situations in Germany and the Netherlands where I was questioning my choices of walking during the night.
Sea_Bag3184@reddit
Nobody goes to Western Europe for safety... Different motives obviously
nrliii@reddit
Doesnt change the fact its safer.
Wardonius@reddit
Serbia is considered reasonably safe overall, but it’s not generally safer than most Western European countries. So no its not a fact.
rmes@reddit
I've recently traveled every country in the balkans with my family in a motorhome. I have really enjoyed our time visiting Kosovo and Serbia. Albania is very nice too, and also northern Greece (vykos)
New_Accident_4909@reddit
Wdym Kosovo AND Serbia?
He he
rmes@reddit
Yeah, polítics aside both seemed very different from each other in my touristic perspective ( I Don't mean to hurt any susceptibilities here)
We really loved the Serbian hospitality, and the Kosovo's political freshness and Alps-like landscapes.
Both were very significant visits during our recent Balkan trip
New_Accident_4909@reddit
You should be a diplomat :)
SaggyBottomBitch@reddit
What do you want to see? Cities, history, nature? How long do you have? Do you plan to drive?
lebron73711@reddit (OP)
we're gonna fly there from the us and then drive all over. im really into beaches and history especially. and we're gonna go for about a week and a half
vermilion_dragon@reddit
If history is interesting to you, I’d suggest Perperikon and the Tatul Sanctuary, along with the Valley of the Thracian kings, better known as the Rose valley. Also, Plovdiv and , if you have the time, Veliko Tarnovo. I can suggest more for Bulgaria if you want, but I don’t know if you’ll have the time.
Holiday-Step9703@reddit
Greece has the best beaches by far, like literally no competition. Especially the islands like Crete IMO. But that's too remote if you want to visit other places too and you couldn't fit that into your itinerary I think.
SaggyBottomBitch@reddit
Ok, you don''t have a lot of time. I would say go for Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Mostar. You have a combination of history and seaside.
poulette_poulette@reddit
Then you should visit Bosnia for sure
Busy-Kaleidoscope216@reddit
If you’re visiting in the summer, Ohrid, Macedonia 🇲🇰 is THE place to go. Trust me you wont regret it.
petarandr@reddit
It really depends on the time you have, and if you will rent a car. My proposal would be to land in Ljubljana, go twards istria, continue back to zagreb, via belgrade towards Sofia, than kavala, thessaloniki, athens.
This would be the backbone, and you can check out some locations on the sidelines. This is all high way, so it is easier to drive. These cities are connected by bus if you do not have the possibility to rent a car.
SnooLemons4051@reddit
Canadian here: just went last summer. Belgrade ofc, downtown sofia was cool, istanbul is cool, budva, thessaloniki, dubrovnik
Pale-Examination-619@reddit

lebron73711@reddit (OP)
I meant to make it all of the rest of the countries
Binary_Bowser@reddit
bucharest is very beautiful
armyrovic@reddit
Greece, but not Mykonos, Zakynthos or Santorini. These places are only for the wealthy ones. Athens is a “risky” one(especially Omonoia or Exarchia), I mean, you’ll see Parthenon, Acropolis and so many other majestic places but it’s up to you. I’d say go to Ioannina or Thessaloniki or Kavala (gem). If you want to visit Bulgaria, then visit Plovdiv or Veliko Tûrnovo, maybe Varna too.
No_Delay3465@reddit
It depends what you’re into. If you’re into good beaches, Albania and Greece are definitely the places to go (Greece all beaches honestly but especially islands and Albania all the beaches to the south of Vlora, don’t bother with the northern ones). Also Croatia and Montenegro do have beaches but they’re not worth it compared to the Ionian Sea ones (so southern Albania and Greece)
If you’re into cultural tourism, Albania has plenty of cities and Greece is obviously a clear choice too. I would also recommend Bucharest and Dubrovnik (Croatia). Albanian and Greek culture are very distinctive from the rest of the Balkans so they’re worth seeing and honestly Dubrovnik is a magical place, same goes for Bucharest.
Personally I haven’t enjoyed my visits to Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia or Bulgaria THAT much. There are some nice parts (Northern Kosovo has some lovely mountains that truly make you feel like you’re visiting the swiss alps, or Macedonia has some nice skiing locations), but I wouldn’t say they’re fully worth a visit. I’d honestly go down the coastline of Croatia (Dubrovnik is a must see), Montenegro (Budva), Albania (skip to the southern coastline, preferably Himara and Saranda and detour to some cultural cities like Berat or Gjirokastra) and Greece (northern for beaches, southern to go to Athens and maybe end the tour with a nice visit of the Acropolis)
Safety wise, it’s safe af. Everyone knows everyone, the police doesn’t have much to do so it’s very easy to find criminals. My whole life in Albania there have been maybe only 1 or 2 crimes unresolved, hit and runs are non existent, pickpocketing is honestly extremely rare (I’ve never heard of any pickpocketing case in my life here), random violent crimes are very rare. Athens might be slightly unsafe and more of a Western capital vibes wise, the rest of the Balkans are incredibly safe for tourists (your biggest threat is that you’ll get tricked into paying higher prices lol)
redditEXPLORE03@reddit
If you can spare some time, definitely visit Struga and Ohrid in Macedonia. This time of year the borders are pretty clear, so you won’t have any trouble waiting around for hours.

Balkans are quite safe , you can walk pretty much everywhere day / night , most of the organised Balkan crime doesn’t directly effect commons people safety and it’s mostly corruption related.
I dare to say it’s much safer than plenty places in Western Europe.

Last year during the summer I spent 3 weeks in Albania. I liked it very much and I recommend it every time I can. It wasn't overcrowded as I imagine Greece would be during that period.
In 3 weeks it's enough to visit the whole country (Tirana, Shkodër, Berat, Gjirokastër, Korça).
My favourites were Shkodër and Gjirokastër. You can do a hike in Albania Alps it's also nice. There are also untouched mountainous zones in this area they call Tropojë if I remember correctly. Tirana is OK for some cultural stuff (National Art Museum seems ok but it was getting restored when I was there, Enver Hoxha's bunker). Nightlife there was mid, mostly showoff and people tended to stay at their table with friends so it's hard to socialise, but some bars are cool). You can skip Himarë and Saranda, just concrete balnear resorts for partying, but if you like that, go for it!
I also spent two days in Kosovo (Prizren), it was lovely, I think Kosovo is almost identical to Albania.
Also spent 5 days in North Macedonia (Skopje and Orhid), not bad but I preferred Albania.
