Is it worth getting varifocal contact lenses?

I've worn lenses for about 30 years now for shortsightedness. Last couple of years my close up sight has started to go as well. A temporary fix was to knock my prescription back from -8 in both eyes to -7.5 which didn't make normal much but improved close up.
It's not working anymore so I've scheduled an appointment to at varifocals.
Just wondering how other people find them? Do they make everything much better or do they cause other problems? I still don't fully understand how they work
