Monopoly and how your family plays it?

As a keen board gamer I hate monopoly (rant below), however if you play it by the proper rules it goes a whole lot better, pretty much every house rule makes the game worse (i.e. longer) by adding/keeping more money in the game for a longer time.  Even if you do play it properly though it is a terrible game, because it's literally designed to be. It was a game used to show how bad monopolies are, and that being the first to a technology (or property market in this case) and creating a monopoly doesn't help consumers. It is basically random in that it's roll to move, so the skill element is very low and it has a big issue where you essentially know who is going to win from a long way out, but goes on for ages past that point. Also as is the case with a lot of American style games (yes monopoly is an American game), once you're knocked out you may just take yourself off and sit in the corner. It's scarred a while load of people who then think they don't like games (when really they don't like monopoly, again, it's supposed to be bad) who then don't chose to play the magnitude of really well made and actually fun to play family games that have been created in the hundred years since. Bonus (not) fun fact, the game was also stolen by a man from a woman who then made all the money from it!  Bonus (sort of) fun fact, cludeo is a British game and was basically traded with the Americans for the rights to create the British version of Monopoly... I can't be bothered to look  into the full details right now!
