My P.E teacher was an absolute champ, I was in the lower set of p.e so all the larger kids and people who were not at all sporty. He really tried to give us a positive outlook on fitness and sports. My daughter’s PE teacher cornered her in an empty corridor the week before she left for sixth form and told her she was happy she was leaving, and that nobody would believe her over her teacher if she reported this interaction. She was a rather stupid woman, and a bully who had been repeatedly very racist towards one of my daughter’s classmates and then got angry when my daughter tried to report this. I don’t know where she is now, but as a teacher myself I hope she has learned and is doing a better job of carrying out her responsibilities.

Mine were mostly all good. One in year 7 was a bit old fashioned authoritarian but he became an English teacher the following year. His replacement, and the other two were great as long as you turned up with kit and tried. They didn't care if you weren't very good at sports, as long as you gave it a go then they wouldn't make nasty remarks abouts you. I can imagine the people that 'forgot' their kit every week for 5 years thought they were dicks, but I can understand how frustrating it must be for the teachers to always have the same kids never taking part. Always had some good banter with one of the teachers. He'd take the piss out of anybody at random each week, but equally would laugh if you came back at him with something.

At my school PE teachers were either very nice or absolutely vile there was absolutely no in between at all. One in particular was absolutely awful, a proper bully who hadn’t ever moved on since the 1980’s the most bizarre thing he was well known in the school for it. Senior staff constantly protected him for whatever reason I don’t know despite multiple complaints. Had been teaching since the late 70’s (I was at high school 2009-2013). He was a bit like Mr Hicks off Grange Hill. A few others took great delight in humiliating people that weren’t sporty and were just very bitter people. Other PE teachers were very nice and genuinely did encourage and want the best for you even if you weren’t great at sports. I wouldn’t even say it was down to age. One PE teacher I had retired when I was 14 and she was in her early 70’s by the time she retired. She was genuinely such a nice lady who was very encouraging and while she was very strict everyone had a lot of respect for her.

Got on pretty well with mine, although because my father was a teacher in the school I knew then socially, which helped. The only exception was rugby, which I hated with a passion. We were a small school so we used to do sport in 2 year bands. My father used to teach the year above & below mine, and those 2 years had a disproportionately large number of kids who were big for their age. Meantime, I was small, and I got singled out for a lot of bullying from those 2 years as revenge for the fact my dad was their teacher. And it was especially bad on the rugby pitch, where they could hit as hard as they wanted with impunity. The teacher never understood why I hated rugby so much.

All-boys school in the 90s, so pretty much oblivious to anyone who wasn't good at PE, but not actively malevolent otherwise. I happened to be crap at football and cricket, but good at rugby and (for some reason) the bleep test, so I hovered on the edge of "well done son, get in there!" and "who are you?". The only other really notable thing about them was that all three favoured eye-wateringly short shorts, and one clearly didn't wear underpants. We saw Mr G's hairy bollock casually dangling out the leg of his shorts more times than any human should have to.

All but one were both useless teachers, indifferent at best to those not sporty or at worst cruel. The good one was a former professional rugby league player who looked and spoke like a cockney version of the Thing from fantastic 4 who as scary as he could be when pissed off was full of encouragement and would actually work on skill set and look to improve technique. He was a great disciplinarian and any of the kids being good at football who liked to bully the fat kids would make sure they were used in tackling demonstrations against the larger kids, a great leveller - literally as some of them would get the shit beaten out of them for a change all in the name of PE, loved that guy

I have something wrong with my knee (I was born like it). I could just about do cross country if I ran one lamp post, walked one lamp post. One week the PE teacher chased all the slow people round making everyone run the entire thing. I tried to explain that I can’t do that but she insisted. Got to the end, collapsed in a puddle sobbing and had trouble walking for a few days. Next time we did cross country I didn’t get changed and I also didn’t have a note from a parent and just said I’m not doing it. She must have felt guilty because I never did cross country again

I was tall and gangly, and uncoordinated, and they had no idea how to help me to improve, they'd just shout things like "you're tall, you should be good at this", while entirely favouring the naturally athletic kids. Mine were sort of stereotypical. We did rugby in year 7 and year 8, and it was freezing and muddy. And, they were telling us it's not as cold as we really think. They were nice to me. To most of the lads actually. Even those who aren't as sporty. They did bend the rules *a lot* but usually in favour of the pupils. Like, buying cans and chocolate from them, they told us we must pay £10 for some sort of trip but they secretly waived it for us, they gave us time to finish early, at the end of year 10/11, we just spent the whole time in PE playing football which we wanted as we had finished our BTEC course and it worked out for them because all they have to do is just chuck a football out and supervise. We were capable enough to sort our own teams out, and play. I know that in mixed gender schools, some PE teachers can be weirdos towards the girls. I don't understand how they can even think of doing that personally but it happens.

In year 7 we had Mr P and Mr H who tried to run PE like it was a boot camp and they were some kind of drill sergeants. Unnecessarily aggressive, always barking orders and always at the top of their lungs etc, even before lesson begun when we were lining up outside the PE block.... A pair of tossers, frankly. For the rest of school we rotated between Mr G, Mr K, and Mr W - all of whom were absolutely sound and we never had any issues with.

Ours fancied himself as some sort of drill-sergeant. Enjoyed shouting, enjoyed humiliating the less sporty kids, and allowed the sporty kids to join in. Obsessed with making sure everyone went through the showers afterwards. Wouldn't allow anyone to wear a T-Shirt under their rugby shirt, even when it was below freezing outside. Would tell us to do star jumps to get warm. But would be wearing several layers himself. If I read in the local press that he'd frozen to death having accidentally locked himself out of the house in the middle of winter, wearing only shorts and a rugby shirt my first thought would be "yeah, see how you like it you prick. Should have done more star jumps". It's weird how some teachers can actively put you off the subjects they supposedly teach.

Christ alive. I 60f went to an all girls Catholic convent school. I was a skinny tall girl with a blonde affro. My school days were brutal, but I was the only girl in a family of 5 siblings. I could take on all comers, except my PE teacher. She was not a nice person and she hated that I wouldn't shower after PE. I only lived a 20 minute walk away from school, my hair was a frizzy nightmare when it was dry, 10× worse when it was wet. When she forced me into the shower, I finally told my dad about it. I was the only girl, apple of my dad eye, still am . That teacher never bothered me in the locker room again. I never understood it, I was in the swimming team, the hockey team, the running team, I was shit at netball and tennis though

It was a bit of a mix. I wouldnt call any of them evil but rather dumb and insensitive for sure! I was the chubby kid in school so I really didn't appreciate a Skins vs Shirts basketball game where they wanted me running around with no shirt on (all boys of course). I did hare PE back then so was never going to be a fan of being forced to attempt to play football for an hour and a half every week! I did quite enjoy racquet sports though and it was always a fun surprise when them and the other sporty kids forgot I could play and I demolished them! As a whole our PE teachers were pretty nice. It was a female dominated dept. with 3 hockey mad female teachers and 1 ( later 2) and a half male teachers. The half was one of the assistant head teachers. We did have 1 hard nut male teacher for a year or so but we had been so thoroughly ruined by the fun and games "as as you take part" ethos of the dept. He got fed up with us and stopped trying in short order.

The head of PE was a miserable git who gave me detention in Year 9 because apparently I wasn't putting in enough effort in volleyball. In year 10 and 11 I started enjoying PE as it became Games which was a lot more laid back and I had got into football. My brother's PE teacher in year 7 was worse though, She made him and some other boys get changed outside the changing rooms as they were a few minutes late. This was around 20 years ago, if it was a male teacher who did this to girls then there would have been a huge uproar. She was one of the most power hungry teachers I've ever known.

Not being particularly sporty, I found them to be largely uninterested. They would muster some energy for the more athletically inclined kids but the rest of us were basically background props in their lessons. One of them also taught us geography for a year, which is to say he would read from a PowerPoint an actual geography teacher had made for him, and he brought to the classroom the same lack of interest he had on the school field. There was also one who got done for sending creepy messages to young girls.

It varied. I was an overweight kid who didn’t like football so most PE teachers hated me and it was mutual. But there was one massive exception. Mr C. I call him Mr C, because that’s what all the kids called him until the other teachers got jealous of his ability to build genuine rapport with kids. And it was because we could have real conversations with him where we weren’t talked down to. Even the fat kid who doesn’t like football was treated with respect and friendliness. I was in his class for year 6, he was just as happy to talk nerdy shit about comics with me (we both read 2000ad) as he was to talk about football with the other kids. He encouraged me to try rugby, and that’s when I learned that the fat kid who doesn’t like football is pretty handy in a scrum, and could shrug off tackles like they were nothing. My rugby never went past middle school level, but he took me from a kid who dreaded PE and was always picked last, to the kid that captains would argue over with their first pick. The happy ending to the story (at least as far as I know, it’s not like we stayed in touch) he married the super hot year 7 drama teacher everyone (including me) had a crush on. I’m sure there will be many examples of horrible PE teachers in this thread, I definitely experienced several myself, but I wanted to mention an example of the other extreme.

They were all pretty nice, but one eye-rolling moment I remember from when we started comp was being told that period cramps were no excuse for not doing PE and that "running around would make us feel much better". Certain stretches can help, but running around is the last thing you want to do when it feels like someone's chainsawing your midsection. There's also the classic "it's not even cold!" when you're outside in winter in a short-sleeve polo shirt and they've got a massive puffer coat on.

Which was awful and traumatising for the first 5 years where I was forced to play rugby and either stayed out of the way of the people who actually liked that brutal sport, of fear of being tackled despite the ball being at the far end of the pitch. Also didn’t back down when my mum told him to lay off me, i did eventually get a pass to completely skip and do catch up on other subjects during the time. I still hate him wholeheartedly and i finished school 9 years.

most were ok, i had one in middle school though that would check your shoes were tight, if they were loose he would pull them off and throw them as far as he could up the field. also has one in high school that took a disliking to me as my older brother chose to play rugby for the town team rather than the school team.

As an adult i’ve been diagnosed with dyspraxia and hyper mobility. As a child i was told my PE grades were pathetic, was deliberately the only child excluded from the swimming gala awards as I was too scared to jump in the deep end and spent lunches alone cos my friends made the netball team but I didn’t 😔 also trailed in last in all sports day races and I remember begging my friend to teach me how to run fast

I'm sorry to hear that and can relate having had undiagnosed dyspraxia at the time and being told off constantly for not trying hard enough. I really just couldn't handle PE, was always the last to get changed for a match which understandably caused annoyance because everyone was delayed because of my anxiety. My PE teachers belittled and undermined my confidence, especially in swimming. I have nightmares even now as a 40 year old when I have to prepare myself for an offsite sporting event at work.

Mine were vile in the early / mid 80s. I hated how they leered at you when having a shower. Just horrible. One doubled up as my maths teacher for my GCSEs and I failed miserably. She didn’t like me and I stopped going to PE and maths.

Hot take: I was a 'nerdy' student who did well academically but was terrible at sports. My P.E. teachers were often bullies to me and others who weren't good at sports, but if I'm honest, I think my science and English teachers might have been just as cruel to those who weren't as gifted in each respective subject. So I don't think it's something to do with P.E. teachers as it is to do with teachers in general treating students who like their subject in a better way.

I had similar experiences of the angriness when I couldn't do something. I remember once running towards a long jump pit and a teacher shouting "you'll never be a long jumper if you run like that" - my reaction was delight because it was exactly the last thing I wanted to be at that moment. There was one teacher who understood that not everybody was interested in sport and that not everyone would be good at it. The rest - one brain cell each with "sport" stamped on it However, for pure evil I would nominate my Religion Education teacher who was a nasty, vile, human being with no redeeming features at all. Most of his lessons involved him lecturing us about how we, our actions, and our view on life were wrong. I remember one lesson in particular when he did nothing but berate "popular music" and tell us we were foolish for listening to it

My netball teacher, who was also my history teacher, had serious issues with me personally, mocking what I said and did and talking down to me. Undiagnosed ADHD probably played a factor. Because of the number of girls in our year, I was the only person that never made it on the netball team, I didn’t like netball so that didn’t bother me too much, but that loneliness for an entire year really hurt. All that time I could have been bonding with the other girls I had spent alone with my Spanish teacher. She was so lovely, but i believe l how odd it was. I overheard the other girls talking about how I should just be there. I don’t think I fully caught up socially.

Mine is now an instructor at my gym 😳. She was pretty brutal. I was crap at team sports because I have no coordination but I can run pretty fast. She accused me of cheating in a cross country because I was beating the sporty problem. No I am really awful at sport but I can outrun most people.

Ours were alright but seem lazy in hindsight. Classes of around 30 pupils but 2 classes doing PE/gym at a time and if there was a time where it was classes of the same year they would just put us all in the gym to play benchball against each other while the teachers sat and chatted over coffee, occasionally blowing the whistle to let us know they were still there. One moment I won’t forget is when one of the teachers announced to us all that someone had BO so we all needed to shower once we got home. Once we were all changed we were leaving the changing rooms and the teacher was there apparently sniffing groups of teens to work out where the smell was coming from. She probably wasn’t but usually the teaches were just sat in their office while the kids left so it was strange that she picked that day to guard the door.
