In the uk they are all set at 56, though calibration is not always spot on, some companies calibrate them on worn out tyres to get the highest speed out of it, these ones run often around 58, some calibrate them with whatever tyres are in at the time so 56 on the speedo may actually be 54, so I’m coming along dead on 56 and overtaking some

Well, that’s probably easier when you’re all set at the same speed. In the states you’ll have some people limited to 63 some others at 68, and some at 70, and some at 75…..makes for a lot of stress and frustration.

Yes and no. The governor isn’t the problem. The drivers attitude is. Just because your truck can go 68 doesn’t mean you have to go 68. I always cruise at a few below my governor so I can see if it’s even feasible to attempt to pass.

I can tell you as someone who drives a faster truck that some of those guys in slower trucks act like they will take any opportunity to get in your way. They hate the fact that you can just cruise right past them.

Every day, multiple times, a truck I'm going at least 5 miles amm hour faster than. Pulls out of the left lane into my lane with less than a 50 feet because there's something going 1mph slower than them 1000-2000 feet in front of them. All gas, no brakes with most of these new drivers.

This guy was an arsehole. If he wasn’t happy with you being behind him, all he had to do was kick the cruise off for a minute and let you go by. 500ft is a reasonable following distance. There’s no need for his behaviour.

With a large percentage of trucks on the highway following the vehicle in front of them so closely they can smell what the other guy had for breakfast, I’ll count a 5 second following distance as a win. And I’m sure my safety guy would too.

Did you have your Brights / high beams on? A lot of drivers apparently just drive around all the time with fog lights, landing lights or miniature suns on the front of their trucks. I'm not sure if it helps them see into the future or what, but its annoying as fuck....

People are dumb, there are no exceptions. Sometimes I want people out from behind me especially in the mountains when I know I'm heavy so they're not trying to pass me in a climb and build up a bunch of traffic next to me. Usually I just cut back to 65 at that point though.

Im at 70. Had a guy creep up behind me slowly. He'd back up, creep up, back up. So I figured he must be just SLIGHTLY faster than me. So instead of being a dick, I moved over the left lane, bcuz it was empty. I slowed down to 64, let him pass, and moved back over. It isn't hard. I don't know why people are such asswipes.

If I was the OP and was going 0.5mph faster, I wouldn't let the auto cruise keep me at 500 ft. I would have tapped down one click on the cruise until the guy was out of my view. I understand why the truck in front got pissed. He is used to always being passed and doesn't like it when he is being tailed, even if they are 500 ft back. So when the OP was content camping 500 ft back, the truck in front was expecting OP to pass. In his mind, OP wasn't following the script.

LOL seriously though probably just headlights, even if you weren't high beaming into his mirrors the new trucks with LED headlights are just ridiculously bright and us old people don't have good night vision anyways. But his overreaction was unnecessary, as u/Dogs_Breakfast78/ said he could just kick off cruise control for a minute and you could have passed him but the most obvious solution makes too much sense nowadays because most people lack common sense. You see it daily when one truck tries to pass another truck and they're one mph difference so it takes ten miles to pass.

People are weird. Yesterday I was on US 287 in WY. I'm governed at 65, and I had this dude riding my ass. Passing lane opens up, and I get over to the right. I think the area was flat, or maybe just slightly inclined, and I'm ready to drop speed to help him pass me... but he settles in to continue riding my ass in the right lane. The entire passing lane goes by like this. A minute or two after we're back in two lane land, he starts juking left to see if he can pass. There's a very light but just steady enough stream of oncoming traffic that he cannot. Then, he starts juking *right* as if he's going to pass me in the shoulder! There's no way. He'd have to run over the road markers to do that. He starts riding me even closer. Finally, a passing lane opens up again, but this time it's a climbing lane. By the time I reach the top, he's at least half a mile behind me. A few curves later, I never saw him again. WTF?

Whats happens when someone follows you for awhile is when you need to move over or change lanes , this person all a sudden wants to pass that moment. I just click my cruise button and it slows down in 5 mph increments. If they still don’t pass I turn on hazards and get real slow. They will pass eventually.

At a speed of 68mph, a distance of 500ft is equivalent to a following distance of approximately 5.01 seconds. Thats too close in perfect conditions. Dude was still a total dick for slamming the brakes though.

I don't know if it applies to this exact scenario, but just speaking in general, it is safest not to travel in clusters. I see it all the time. Trucks (and cars) all grouped together, and all going the same speed. Why not give some extra space? First, it makes it harder for people to pass you. They've got to pass multiple trucks now, instead of one. Secondly, the front vehicle has an emergency, slams on brakes, a tire blowout, sh*t fall off his truck,, etc.... Then all the vehicles behind him are in his wake. Maybe people think they are "going with the flow," but in my perspective, I'd rather you stay away from me.

When I was new, I used to get nervous when trucks would camp behind me, especially up in the mountains, but I’d just turn down my cruise a couple miles an hour till they passed. Don’t worry about it. Some people are just cranky for no reason.
