My last day at my current job will be the 31st December before I start my new career. One of the other guys I work with always says "I dont do friends. You're all just work colleagues to me and nothing more." Yesterday before I went home for the day I was speaking to him and he asked me how many days I had left. Having a really tough time at the moment, have split with the missus after 27 years, and have moved back with my mum until I figure out my next move, we are sharing custody of our four year old who is autistic and I took him a nearby park and saw a pub offering an interesting looking menu so popped in, the kitchen had just closed and was about to leave and this old guy at the bar just out of the blue says something like, ‘can I just say you and you son have really special bond, the way he looks at you is quite amazing, and you obviously love him’. Damn near almost fell to my knees and burst into tears.

It does. It all gets easier. Or sometimes it gets a different kind of hard that's less horrible. (Mtly AuDHD kid was EXHAUSTING until they were about 19, but now (older, properly diagnosed and medicated) they're doing much better and are more independent, less anxious, and generally happier. Wish I could go back to tell myself how much better it would get.

Hold tight fella, I’ve been through a very similar thing the last few years with a divorce, two young kids and having to move back in with my folks who are both now elderly and really struggling health wise. It’s these pure moments we’ve gotta hold on to. Stay strong for the kids (obvs without being a robot) and enjoy the time we have with them. Life can be savage, and there’s nothing you can do but take the L and keep going.

It was my birthday in July (M56), I had just been to the carwash to give my car its monthly wash. I arrived at my house which is on a main road and I swiftly parallel parked between my wife's car and the neighbours, as I do almost every day, so I've had plenty of practice. This is a really wholesome thread. I’ve had two moments that really stuck with me. First, I liked a LinkedIn post from an old colleague, and he DM’d me because he didn’t recognise me. He said, “You look happy!” And I just thought - damn. Of all the ways we try to measure success, that’s the one that actually matters. Then I closed the app, because honestly, why was I even on LinkedIn anyway? Second, I told a colleague that my son is autistic, and he replied, “Oh! I took my child (about 18 months at the time) to a picnic with friends and one of them, after watching her for a bit, said “it’s really obvious that she plays a lot. She really knows how to interact with objects and entertain herself”. That felt like a compliment to my parenting. Another was when I was parking up at the supermarket. I’m a new driver and reversed out a little bit to adjust so that I’d be parked perfectly (my parking is… not great a lot of the time so I try to force myself to just redo it until it’s as good as I can get it in order to practise and get better). A taxi driver in the bay next to me complimented my parking and the fact that I’d made the effort to get it right.

That’s really nice. Good planning ahead! For me: doctor’s office with my kiddo, who is autistic and especially bad at waiting. She was having a full blown meltdown - like, I need to sit on the floor with her and compress her joints and name everything we can see levels of meltdown. The two ladies in the waiting room with us must have thought I was a monster. As we get up to go in to the appointment I turn back to apologise for the ruckus, and one of them says “you’re a really good dad”, and the other says “you really are”. And I damn near burst into tears.

Oooh, at the ripe old age of 36 and male, I actually got a random compliment from a stranger this year. Possibly my first ever. I was at an airport in India ordering a Subway, the young woman in front of me heard me talking English and started chatting - she was considering coming to study at Uni in England and I work in the sector so conversation was easy. The conversation was short however, as she soon received her order and left. But before she got too far she swivels 180 degrees, and drops "oh by the way, you're very nice to look at". Yep, I'll be riding that high for many years to come. We should all be handing out random compliments more frequently, you lovely lot.

A mate of mine was giving me a back massage when we were hiking because I was stood around the camp hunched up, feeling very cold, damp and sorry for myself, and he went "You've got some back on you, mate. You've got traps for days." I'm not a big muscular guy but I'm pretty good at chin ups and I've always been quite pleased with my back, and it was probably the first time anyone's ever said anything to me about it. It’s not *the* best one I’ve had this year, but a girl I dated told me my fave is “pretty, like a girls”. I kinda knew what she was getting at, but at the same time have no idea. I’m somewhat high maintenance for a man, so there’s something in there for that, though I’m only looking at the positives.

I have had a very bad year by my standards. Become a regular day drinker - 20 units a day and gained two stone, lost nearly my entire white collar job to AI which does a terrible job, got to get my brain scanned for cancerous tumour recurrence every 6 months, and then wait a month for results every time. And last week my hairdresser said to me when I was joking about my looks, which I have always been really insecure about cause I'm weird looking, that I was "model material". It's the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me and I really wasn't fishing. I am really grateful to her for that.
