If you were given £1000, what would you do with it?

Posted by HilariousMotives@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 87 comments

It's not a massive amount, but it's a fair chunk. Would you spaff the lot? Invest it? Pay for three days of heating? Something else?

Buy my mum a dishwasher

I’d buy Miss-Mercatale’s Mum a dishwasher.

Thank you!! 🥰. She’s 80 and hers broke but she won’t (or can’t) buy a new one. I managed to buy a secondhand one but that’s just packed up too. So I need to start a penny jar to buy her a proper one! But the grand would help!

Nothing, it’d sit in my savings and eventually contribute to my next car purchase (718 Cayman GT4 for those wondering).

beernon@reddit

Cool car. I’m a large fan of electric cars but can’t for the life of me understand why people are purchasing electric Porsches, they’re endemic in London now.
View on Reddit #73896343

95jo@reddit

I’m not a fan of electric cars. They’re everywhere because they’re incentivised via salary sacrifice (little to no BIK tax) and a lot of people earning £100k+ in London who want to sacrifice down to get the tax free child care vouchers (and generally avoid tax). The 718 Cayman GT4 has a naturally aspirated 4.0 flat six engine and in my case, it will be a manual too - It’ll never see London!

beernon@reddit

Somewhat enlightening, not sure why I didn’t know this earlier. I assumed the disproportionate amount of expensive cars in London nowadays was down to the leasing “must have shiny thing!” situation spreading like wildfire.

This isn't an option and my best friend helped me out when I needed it the most and I wouldn't dream of not paying them back and especially when they helped me when I was at rock bottom and they chucked me a huge lifeline.

Go to the dentist
View on Reddit #73896187

Mdl8922@reddit

I had that initial thought too, but unfortunately £1000 doesn't even fix one of my teeth!
View on Reddit #73896326

Glass_Waltz4617@reddit

I've got 2 cavities and one is quite bad on one of my rear teeth. It would be an expensive fix as it's along the gum line. Not just a simple drill and plug. I've already said to the wife after Christmas I'm gonna treat myself to a visit to the dentist even if it's just to get that tooth pulled. Been told to expect that to cost at least £200. Luckily we have the kids on a NHS dentists patient list but there's non taking adults and private is bloody expensive
View on Reddit #73896794

Mdl8922@reddit

Ain't it just! I have an NHS dentist, but they won't do anything on the NHS beyond checkups, extractions and "small fillings" I need 2 root canals/crowns at £1600 each, plus a filling, I've been holding off on them for over 18 months now, it's unpleasant! Absolutely get yours sorted mate, you don't wanna leave it to get worse.
View on Reddit #73897137

Glass_Waltz4617@reddit

It's not fair is it? Mine kicks off randomly with pain,at least once a week I'm sat up at night necking painkillers until 3 am until the pain goes away. Been told if I'm in pain to ring 111 and they will get me an emergency appointment at NHS prices because I don't have a dentist. So I think I'm gonna give that a shot. But yeah,if I had to have something that costs more than 500 like yours I will just tell them to pull that tooth. It's the one right at the back anyway so won't change my appearance. My fault for drinking way too much Pepsi
View on Reddit #73897461

Mdl8922@reddit

Oh mate that sounds awful! I'm lucky in the sense that I've got used to the pain for the most part. It's a low grade 2 out of 10, or sometimes just feel random pressure in my jaw, but every so often it flares up with absolute agony that I have to self medicate with morphine, been a while though so, fingers crossed! Yeah I know I need to get them pulled, I'm just worried as I've already had one pulled on that side, I can't afford to lose another 2 on that same side, I'm too young to be toothless lol. I can only eat soft foods, which absolutely sucks! Have to rinse instantly once I've eaten too, I have gaping holes in the teeth that food gets stuck in, it's horrible. Too many sweets & fizzy drinks when I was a kid, I'm much better now but the damage is done unfortunately.

I'd buy a new washer/dryer God they're so fucking shit, I hope the fucker that designs them loses his knee caps I swear to god. I'm just hoping that if I complain enough I will get invited to a secret subreddit that gives me the inside baseball on what washer dryer I should actually buy. All the ones I buy break within a few months. Fucking bullshit.
View on Reddit #73896602

ResplendentBear@reddit

So we're on our 3rd one in 19 years.  And the first one didn't break, we just left it after 8 years use as it was fitted.  We've only needed one engineers visit too. They have all been just washers though... Oh and if it makes you feel better, we're on our 6th hoover.
