Is marmite a liquid?

A family member abroad wants some Marmite and I'm flying with only hand luggage so will a jar of the black stuff be treated as a liquid by security?

in what country is it difficult to buy Marmite?

None probably, as a country. Finding a niche product in the capital city is not the same as out in the sticks.

I've lived in several different countries and never been without Marmite. I even donated a fresh jar to my favourite cafe in Thailand.

I had an issue with fruit jam at airport security a few years ago

I found out recently that there are no actual rules on this but that most airport security operate on the "if it pours at room temperature" rule. So I'd say Marmite counts as a liquid.

I've dotted small jars of Marmite around the US a few years ago. That was fun. I went back a couple of years later and most was still pristine.

Were you ever stopped by security and required to explain what it was?

Nope. I got my flight case checked this time because a bar of posh soap showed up as Semtex on the scanner.

Er, what?! It showed up as semtex and they still put it in the hold?! JFC

If they have any brains, they'll treat it as a jar of poison and immediately incinerate it ☠️

Lol you'd have a heart attack if we talked about Charles then. 😂😂 I'm as treasonous as they get in this context.

Google says it’s a liquid and you have to abide by the 100ml limit.

I have also seen it in those displays they have of liquids at some airports.

Wrap it in cling film and stick it up your arse, take it out the pot first obviously.

Eat the whole lot, they can't get you for what's digesting in your stomach. Though accessing it afterwards for your family might be a challenge. Seriously though, if you're not sure about Google's comments, call a travel agency \[Tui?\] and ask them, they should know.

Bring back some of it in a cigar case, exclaiming “you have no idea what I had to do to get this thing back!” There is also a 70g option if you can find it.

Can only tell you that I tried to fly with a can of Surströmming from Sweden and they didn't allow in the hand luggage. Was too risky they told me :) But with Marmite you should be fine. Feels like it depends on the guys at the security. Yoghurt was fine for me in the past.

I would expect it to be refused. But take a picture of it (discretely!) in the security queue and see what happens. At the very least you can prove you tried. I wouldn't try and conceal it at all - just put it in the tray on its own. They won't thank you for making them go through your bag to check it out. You'll probably be down £14.50 (I assume this is what Marmite costs now?), but you will have tried your best.
