Why is customer service so bad in the UK?

Having lived and worked in a few countries, I have a theory. Usually countries seem to fall (very roughly) into a few camps: \- Genuine pride in your job (like japan) Where it's engrained that services should be great because you have pride in delivering the best. It is almost embarrassing to have done a subpar job. I was there a few years ago and the train left the station, literally 1 min late and there was a long apology from the train driver and that they would make up the time. It's just part of the culture. \- Strong sense of injustice (Like France) people will get properly angry and will complain until it is literally easier for the company to give in. Why do you think they have more holiday and rights at work than us? They go out into the street and complain en masse. \- Stiff Upper lip (Like the UK) where people have been taught to just take it on the chin and move on. This is obviously really good in many situations, especially when it's a tough time in life. You get hit with shit news, but power through it. However, this makes it easy for companies to go "What you gonna do if I shit on you?". As a public, we haven't been taught how to respond to issues in anger or in a valuable way. Also, we've been taught that things are annoying but "not to disturb the peace". It means that when it comes to wanting good service, we don't argue to the same extent. We don't have this same "let's band together". We work more as individuals. I don't think there is a right way to be, but there are pros and cons to all of them. p.s. this is just a rough way of explaining it, it's not a perfect analysis of the world, just my thoughts jotted down.
