What seemed like a great country to move to when you were younger, but now the idea doesn't seem that great?

Parts of Europe seemed so much nicer than here, so much sunnier and more laid-back. There's always TV shows of people moving out to a sunny space and saying how happy they are, but climate change in particular means that a lot of these pleasant looking places are regularly lethally hot if not actually in flames. The same could be said swathes of Australia.

When you're 20 you're watching your British mates pour into Australia wondering what you're missing. At 30, they're back with (in my opinion) stories of unfulfilled adventure in what is essentially just a more tropical UK. The Aussie housing market and pinches on job markets recently have meant that 6 months of fruit picking is fine, but it doesn't really represent the grand quality of life reset I think most people expected. Also of you move halfway round the world you aren't going to be there for your cousin's wedding or your Nan's funeral - there's sacrifices.

Honestly, I’ve never really been a room and gloom person when it comes to UK living, I love being English and love being born in England - no qualms However, I’ve always had Florence in my mind - probably from watching films - but after visiting it’s just another fridge magnet tourist hell hole, that while nice to visit, I could not imagine me living for any elongated period of time If I did move abroad, it’d be somewhere like Amsterdam, Copenhagen or Stockholm

The USA. When I was a teenager I thought the US was great, full of prosperity and hope, but as an adult I realise that it prioritises the enormous wealth of corporations and treats the majority of its citizens like crap.

It depends when you were a teenager. I did Camp America for three summers at the start of the millennium, and back then I looked at ways of moving. It was the place to be and the American Dream was alive and kicking. Now I'm back home in NI and very happy for it, sometimes I wonder how I would have got on but I'm largely glad I'm not over there.

Same, I'd say USA but mostly due to their health care system. You could work hard all your life but then get sick and could end up bankrupt and homeless!
