Do you consider yourself to have an adequate historical knowledge of the England/Britain?

To answer the title question: Definitely not. Explanations: 1. History in school is taught via National Curriculum KS1-4 (GCSE) and if doing History A-Level (KS5). 2. KS1-2 are done in Primary school iirc Prehistoric (Stone, Bronze, Iron ages briefly) Celts, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Norman Britain through to Medieval periods including major events Black Death, Civil War, Tudor and Stuarts etc. 3. KS3-4 once doing the GCSE curriculum covers Elizabethan period (amazing period btw) and themes such as crime and punishment, medicine and so on then also World Wars is heavily taught at GCSE with options on Cold War and iirc some other rarer options eg British Empire, American Civil War. However schools focus on results so tend to stick to the same standard selections mentioned. 4. So ALL the above happens from about Age 6-15 and primary school when you are a young kid and the material is also simpler. Then add in all the other subjects being stuffed down kids heads and later on the emphasis on learning history not to gain insight and context about modern life but to pass exams, then it is little wonder I would guess most people forget a lot of the above and as adults have very little knowledge retention or increase of history? 5. History is also taught to remember key facts eg timelines and dates, big events eg Kings and Queens, Historic Research Methods eg text and evidence analysis… this all leaves LITTLE ROOM for a different kind of history… 6. A core type of history would synthesize the following: How people used to live, why, what solutions they came up with, what the quality of life was both materially, daily, subjectively, how it changed and why over time and how it compares and contrasts to today and how it explains many things around people. You get glimpses of this in the above but the reason it has value is it feeds into people understanding who they are and why things “operate” the way they do in our own culture today and how future historians will look at today and also say, \>\*“Hark! How primitive they chose to live despite all this knowledge around them they never seemed to make good use of! Fancy that. Such strange people of olden times.”\* I am sure something like the above will be said exactly about the people living 2000-2025 for example, they did not really learn from history…
