Developer workstations always had more RAM than typical customer PC's, which was fine in the old days. A dev would sit down to write new software, and it would take two years. Two years after the develop started, the typical customer would have upgraded to a new computer with more RAM, everybody would be happy. These days, the ecosystem is more complex. It's rare that developers are ever sitting down to write green-field new software because there's so much existing software that already fills most niches. So it's adding features to existing software. And instead of a two year release cycle, a dev can blast out a feature and user's will be auto-updating to it in two weeks instead of waiting to buy an upgrade disc until they buy a new computer. And even if the users did wait two years, Moore's Law no longer makes the upgrade cycle as big as it used to. The whole ecosystem is a mess that still operates on some principles and assumptions that no longer have anything to do with how things work.
