Going to the breast clinic tomorrow to get a lump checked out. What should I expect?

My boobs have betrayed me at the ripe old age of 28. My doctor got me one of the fast-track cancer appointments at our local hospital, but I have no idea what to expect aside from crying from trying to find hospital parking at 8am. If anyone's ever gone through a similar process, I'd love to know what to expect tomorrow! I'm trying to stay positive. Aside from the parking situation. As an aside - I've got to give huge props to the NHS. Doctor referred me at 2:20pm, and the referral was accepted and appointment was booked and confirmed by 2:30pm. Efficient!

As someone also waiting for an appointment at the breast clinic, thank you for asking this question! My GP said they thought all was normal but have sent me for an appointment just in case, I feel like I’ve gone a bit mad because I can definitely feel something different but they couldn’t!

It was completely normal thankfully! They did the scans and were so kind because I felt like a complete idiot because they couldn’t see anything but the nurse just reassured me and said it was always better to be safe than sorry! Thank you so much for asking :)

Examination by nurse then consultant, then ultrasound then biopsy if they deem necessary. Typically breast clinics are set up so you go through all within a day once referred (aside from biopsy results) to ensure max speed, though does mean quite a bit of waiting around on the day. Source: been through it myself (luckily benign) & my sister is a Consultant Oncology breast surgeon (they are the ones that do the mastectomy & reconstruction)

expect to be cold and topless. they'll gel you up and do some scans and some groping. it's an odd experience but worth it for the peace of mind.

It’s a one-stop shop. 1. Assessment by surgeon - occasionally this enough to say it’s nothing 2. imaging if needed (unlikely to be mammogram at your age as they’re not great in younger people, more likely an US), - imaging may give an answer if it very obvious on the imaging what it is and it is benign 3. if needed a biopsy and something called an FNA (fine needle aspiration). The FNA gives a result that day which gives an indication of what it is but not a definitive answer. The biopsy which takes usually 1-2weeks for the result gives the definitive answer and you’ll have an appointment to come back for those results I was 20 when i found my first breast lump. I was a medical student back then and of course had recently been studying breast cancer, so despite knowing the chances of cancer were very small, I was still scared. But I knew what to expect at the clinic since I’d sat in on many already. The fna suggested it was a benign tumour, and I went back a week later, the biopsy result confirmed it was benign and nothing to worry about. They said if I really wanted it removed, they could do that, but that there was no need, so decided to leave it alone. I’ve since found 2 other lumps, and both were basically nothing and only needed an ultrasound. Was in an out within an hour for one appointment From the point of view of thinking about what this could be, I obviously don’t know anything about you, but just based on your age, the chances of it being cancer is low. You are doing the right thing by getting it checked out and not ignoring it. If it does turn out to be cancer (sorry to be blunt) you’ve done something about what you found and it should be early on. There’s a lot of treatments available and advances in management have been significant in the last 20 years. My advice for going to the clinic is take someone with you if you can. Someone you can sit and chat with and who is just generally there for moral support. Also both of you take a book. Sometimes it ends up being a really long day. Have a plan for what to do later that day. I arranged to meet up with a friend for dinner or a drink. It was always a good friend that I could tell what was happening and could have a good moan and vent with several glasses of wine if I felt like it. Hope it all goes well

Hey, I had a lump and had a similar experience to others on here - a manual check with an 'X' added at the location by them with marker, for the ultrasound I had about twenty minutes later. It was a simple cyst, and they offered to drain it then and there (I declined, it was April 2020 and they had sooo many layers on I felt tight asking them to - it's gone on its own now anyways ☺️). What I remember seeing at the clinic was a statistic that for all the referred people they saw in a day, only one would be cancerous. May the odds be ever in your favour x

I had to go to one of these clinics when I was 21. On the day, a nurse did a manual exam first, referring to the GP's report. She concluded that the lump in question was almost definitely just dense breast tissue, but sent me for an ultrasound just to be sure. I then waited maybe half an hour before going into the ultrasound which was super quick (one doctor and one other medical professional in there) and confirmed that there was nothing to worry about. They did have facilities for mammograms and biopsies in the same clinic, but I didn't end up needing to use them. Finally, I saw a consultant who basically confirmed the test results, gave me advice about regular checking, things to look out for etc. and sent me on my way.

I’ve been twice to rapid access clinics over lumps. 2 different clinics but the staff in both were lovely. Consultant saw me first and felt the lump then I had a mammogram both times and an ultrasound at one of the clinics. Turns out I just have lumpy boobs but I lost my sister to breast cancer 9 yrs ago so I’m a huge advocate for getting your boobs checked if you feel anything at all. Hope all goes well.

Hi! 37 here and I had my first breast cancer check over the summer. First I went to my GP (I'd made an appointment after finding a lump). I got a hands on examination by my GP with a nurse attending for safeguarding purposes. It wasn't particularly comfortable but it was professional and quick. I then was sent to local hospital's cancer ward for an ultrasound. This was very similar to a pregnancy scan so cold jelly and a wand moving over your skin. The doctor also had a good feel first to confirm the notes that my GP had sent. Unfortunately, they weren't able to get a good reading as I have dense breast tissue so I had to wait an hour before being moved a few doors down for a biopsy and a more detailed scan. Now the biopsy needed a quick local anaesthetic (stingy but managable) and the deeper scan showed nothing too worrying but they told me that they would call once my biopsy results were done. A week later I learn that I have a knot of abnormal breast tissue but that no cancerous cells were found. I hope yours goes equally smoothly.

Done this myself at the ripe old age of 19! At mine had a nurse do a physical exam of both breasts (to assess normal vs lump). She marked area she wanted them to scan with a marker. They then did an ultrasound of the area as my breast tissue would have been too dense for a mammogram due to my age. Didn't take too long at all and was completely non-invasive. Try not to worry about it, it's basically an exercise to rule out the nastier stuff. Given your age it's very unlikely it'll be anything sinister. Signed, A young woman with hella lumpy breasts

I had similar at that age. I went in and they had me change into a gown and sit in the waiting room with lots of other women doing the same and when they called me in, they did an ultrasound and a biopsy. Then had a consult and they told me it was most likely a fibroadenoma (sp?), gave me a leaflet on them and said I’d get a letter with the biopsy results. And it was all good! All in all took about two hours. Try not to worry, it’s probably fine!

This was my experience when I was referred to a breast clinic via the cancer pathway. I ended up being diagnosed with breast cancer at 30 so may be slightly different from others. I had to complete some family history and medical paperwork. Has anyone in my family been diagnosed with cancer, if so who and when. Any medications, if I smoke or drink, the usual stuff. Then I met a consultant to discuss the lump and have a physical exam. They mapped out the lump on my skin. Referred for an ultrasound of the lump, then a mammogram, then back to the consultant. They were concerned about the lump appearance and feel so I went back to the ultrasound for a biopsy. Spoke to the consultant for a final time with a nurse and was told that its likely cancer but we need to wait for the biopsy results. Biopsy results took 2 weeks. Overall I was there for about 2 hours. Just going up and down the same hallway which I liked because it meant we weren't wondering around the hospital. Everyone was very kind and supportive. My husband and I didnt feel rushed in any way after we were told. I really cannot fault the NHS for their treatment. They didnt mess about and I am really grateful. I hope everything goes well tomorrow!

Had the same issue a couple of years ago at the same age. I was seen very promptly and on time for the appointment. I went in and she just had a chat about why I was there and what I thought was the issue etc. Took off my top/bra and led on a bed whilst she felt both boobs in various positions (arms up etc). Absolutely nothing of note and sent away feeling extremely relieved! She said it’s common for age to get lumps and bumps that may seem sinister but aren’t, but also told me to never ignore them and better to be checked! All in all I was out and back in the car in about 10/15 minutes! Fingers crossed all ok for you!

Ive had two breast clinic appointments before. During one they just examined me using their fingers. Other time, they also used an ultrasound. Little bit uncomfortable but didnt take long. They know why you are going and what your worry is so they are very professional, kind and also matter of fact. Its easy for me to say but try not to worry OP.

I had a strange change in my breast in 2021 when I was in my mid-20s. I didn't have a lump and was in a strict 'tier' zone for covid so this might not be a representative experience. From what I remember my visit to the breast clinic went like this: 1. Signed in at reception 2. Saw a Dr (and medical student) in a private room and described the changes I'd noticed which I think he was cross referencing with the referral notes from my GP. I removed my top & bra and he examined my breast. I was given a 'gown' thing to wear and went back to the waiting room. 3. Had a mammogram in a private room. I had not understand how uncomfortable and weird that would be! Would recommend looking for a video to prepare yourself. Went back to the waiting room. 4. Had an ultrasound done in a private room, and the ultrasound tech said that they couldn't see anything untoward. I asked if that was like a definitive all clear and they said yes, but that I'd also get a letter with my mammogram results and confirmation. I got dressed and left. I was nervous going in (who wouldn't be! it's a scary situation to be in!) but everyone was very calm and friendly. It was strange sitting in a waiting room of people in masks and paper gowns but covid was a strange time all round wasn't it. I went a couple of weeks ago. I'm in my early 40a. I had a mammogram, nothing showed up and in less than half an hour I had an ultrasound. I showed the scanning person where the lump was and she found it on the ultrasound. She decided to biopsy it and numbed my breast with an injection. She then inserted a needle to see if the lump collapsed, which it could have done if it was a cyst. It didn't collapse. She took two biopsies using a different needle guided by the ultrasound. I couldn't feel anything at all and I could watch everything she was doing. They inserted a titanium chip to mark the biopsy site. It took less than half an hour maybe even less than 15 minutes. She also checked my armpit and my other boob because the mammogram made her want to look. She told me that they were absolutely normal. The ultrasound woman told me there was nothing to worry about and the lump was only 5mm. The nurse told me that the ultrasound woman always said if there was a need to worry. The nurse put a dressing on and gave me a gown to wear, I then had another mammogram. Then I went to see the surgical team and someone else tried to feel the lump, she couldn't because she didn't ask me where it was. I was told I'd get a phone call after two weeks with the result. I then got dressed again and left. The surgical team told me a number of times that the mammogram showed no malignancy and that the lump was very small. I got the phone call exactly when they said and it was fat necrosis and nothing to worry about. It was an excellent service but it was scary. I went by myself but even if I hadn't from the first to the last mammogram you had to be alone. While it was great that all the scans were done so quickly and I didn't have time to worry about the biopsy, it felt a bit of a whirlwind and I did get a bit upset after the biopsy. It absolutely did not hurt, even when the numbing wore off. I wouldn't be worried about having the same procedure again, although of course I would be worried about the outcome. For a few days it was a bit of an odd feeling in my breast, like pulling but not awful. I think I'm still a bit bruised. It was a long wait for the result but it was clear that everyone was telling me not to worry and that they would say otherwise. About 15 years ago when I was in my twenties, I also had a couple of lumps. That time, I saw someone who felt the lump, went straight for an ultrasound and got the result immediately that there was nothing to worry about. No biopsy or anything. I think biopsies are a bit more common now, so be prepared to have one, just in case. I don't think people under 30 tend to get a mammogram, but don't worry if you do, it nowhere near as bad as you will expect. Good luck.

You'll go in and meet the dr who will examine you and then mark up with an X. Then send you on your way down to radiology to ultrasound/mammogram. Then back to the dr. Speaking from experience. If ye have saggy boobs and the lumps below the nipple then expect sweaty boob ink spillage if you don't wear a bra, a fairly embarrassing situation let me tell you. I'm 39 and prone to lumpy boobs since my teens, I've only ever had an ultrasound so far.

I have been several times for booby lumps. Each time I've had an ultrasound on both boobs, especially in the areas I have told them I can feel the lump. And then I have an examination. Each time they've told me the result there and then, aka it's most likely a cyst and they can flare up when I'm stressed (which seems to be the case). Take evening primrose oil! I even had an armpit lump checked earlier this year, same process, told it's fine. I have been described as a "very cysty person", having had 2 cysts removed elsewhere on my body that were benign. Honestly, I've never felt more taken care of than when I've been to the boob clinic :)

I had to go a couple of years ago. They’ll do a breast exam by hand, plus a mammogram. Possibly a needle biopsy using the mammogram machine or perhaps ultrasound to help them guide the needle. The consensus on my ‘anomaly’ was that it was a travelling lymph node - I was monitored again 6 months later to be sure nothing had changed. All clear. It’s worrying, a touch embarrassing and a little physically uncomfortable, but the odds are massively in your favour that you will be cleared.

I’m 39 and thy gave me an ultrasound then took a biopsy. This involved local anaesthetic and then paper stitches. It was about a centimetre in length. Take lots of deep breaths when are in the waiting room. Maybe a book to read while you wait: don’t doom scroll, the algorithm will send you lots of unwanted stuff. Good luck, wishing you the best x

I think it depends on the person, I went on my own 5 times including for biopsy results (not when I had surgery though, because you need someone to take you home and look after you) and I was fine on my own. Other people may cope better with someone

I'm going through this right now! I'm 29 and had my appointment on the 1st December. I had a breast exam then was told I needed an ultrasound. I then went back to the waiting room and was called in for an ultrasound. They prefer an ultrasound ocer mammogram in younger women. In the ultrasound the sonographer said she needed to get the consultant in. The consultant came in and they took a biopsy. They were really professional and essentially said it didn't look alarming but they weren't sure what it was so hence a biopsy. They numb the area with local anesthetic then use the ultrasound to guide the biopsy needle. I was then told not to do any heavy lifting for 24 hours and sent home. I think if it's something like a cyst they will drain it straight away right there. As far as I can work out they only give results following a MDT and they are best practice to be given in person regardless of whether it's good or bad news. My results appointment is Wednesday. It really wasn't as scary as I thought, the worst thing is just waiting for the results! Good luck! Remember, most things in women our age are benign. I think something like 80% of biopsies are benign as well. Also, hospital parking is usually easy to find at 8am :)

When I had a similar appointment I had a female chaperone with me at all times. The male doctor looked and touched, gave his opinion that it was nothing, got a second opinion from a more senior doctor who also manually checked it out, I think they drew on me with marker to show the spot, then had an ultrasound scan (cold lube and a handheld device against my skin) to triple check. It was inflamed cartilage. I have my fingers crossed for you.

I went to a breath clinic 4 years ago after finding a lump. Completed a firm about periods and medication. I had a consultation with a nurse who did a breast exam and marked the lump with marker pen. My top was replaced with a hospital robe and my top and bra returned to me in a plastic bag. I went to a waiting room and was then called through for a mammogram. I wish I had tied my hair up, you stand at a weird angle and it kept getting caught in my arm pit or the plates. Just let the nurse manhandle you into the correct position it's easier and quicker than her asking you to maneuver. Both breasts were scanned. It wasn't painful but was uncomfortable. I'm quite short so even though the plates move up and down i was stood on tip toes a bit too. After the mammogram I went back to the waiting room and then got called through for an ultrasound. Again, just let them uncover your breast and move it as they need to, no need to be coy or shy. Usual cold gel then moving of the wand over, they do apply quite a bit of pressure, so again a bit uncomfortable. Mine was confirmed as a cyst and was drained there and then. The didn't wipe the gel off very well so my bra went back onto a sticky breast. Got dressed, put the gown in the dirty bin then back to the initial waiting room where I was called in to see the nurse who did the first exam, she confirmed it was a cyst, it had been drained and no further action required. Hope yours is as positive.

When I went I met with a consultant first who did a manual examination (ie felt my boob where the lump was) and then he sent me to have two different tests done - a mammogram and an ultrasound. He said they might do a fine needle biopsy too if needed but I didn’t need that in the end. I saw a different person for the mammogram. It’s quite uncomfortable but not painful. They flatten out your boob between two kind of panel things in a machine, one boob at a time. You are standing up for this and you have to get into quite weird positions to get your whole boob in. The technician takes photos which they give to the consultant to review. I then saw a third person for the ultrasound, which involved them using a hand-held wand with a sensor thing on the end, they pressed that in my boob where the lump was and moved it around, and looked at the images on a screen. I got the results on the day - from these two tests the consultant was able to confirm that there was nothing to be concerned about. I was there for about 2 hours altogether, most of which was waiting about. I hope it all goes smoothly for you tomorrow and you get good news xxx

Don’t worry too much and over think it. Easier said than done, I know. When you get there you will be guided through the whole process by the nurses and they will look after you. Usually you get a mammogram first which is uncomfortable but usually quite quick. Then you go for an ultrasound and maybe a biopsy if they think one is required. You will have lots of lovely staff around you and ladies going through the same process. If they do a biopsy it shouldn’t hurt, they will give you a local aesthetic and tiny paper stitches. It’s just like a big needle with a wee grabber on the end. You will usually get your results in a separate appointment with a nurse but, from experience if they think it’s nothing serious they will usually tell you on the same day, not to say you should worry if the don’t because all the scans need to be looked over anyway. Remember once you are there you will be looked after and the nurses are usually great. Everyone is really professional. I remember how uncomfortable it was to get topless in front of so many people but now I feel like I’ve had my baps out in front of half the population. I went through exactly the same at 34. I had my appointment in December too. Getting checked out is the best thing to do. Either to put your mind at rest or put you on the right road to getting it all fixed. If you want to DM me I’m happy to answer any questions or even if you just want a chat. It’s hard to talk to people about it who don’t understand what it’s like. I went through it all at 34, then unfortunately I needed treatment so I’ve had experience of the whole process. It’s an emotional roller coaster. 5 years gone now. I had this last year. I had a lump that was also painful that was constantly painful for over two months. GP put me on the 2 week wait referral to the hospital. I saw a consultant who examined me and reassured me that they couldn’t feel anything untoward but let’s have an ultrasound just in case. I had my ultrasound a week later, the ultrasound tech found the lump I was concerned about very quickly and asked her consultant to come review. Consultant decided they wanted a biopsy which felt very scary at the time. I waited two weeks for the results to find out everything was absolutely fine and it was something called sclerosing adenosis of the breast. I now take evening primrose oil daily and have had some improvement but it does flare up. I cried a lot between the biopsy and my results and felt very scared. The healing from the biopsy and the pain I felt made me concerned that something worse was going on but the secretaries at the hospital were lovely and so kind to me when I called up scared and reassured me that what I was feeling was normal and helped me calm down Good luck OP and fingers crossed everything is okay x

I had this at a similar age (I was 29-30) and I was so scared- especially as I have close family history of BC. I was first seen by a doctor and explained why I was referred and showed her the lump, straight away she said from feeling it it felt like a cyst and I likely had nothing to worry about. I had an X-ray and an ultrasound- I didn’t have a mammogram as she said I was too young to need that unless the other tests came back positive. However it could also have been that I could access the one in the hospital as it was a mobile unit up steps and I can’t walk, and she said that to not make me worry more and if I did show to need one they’d send me else where maybe? Both of these were done quickly and the staff were lovely. I had emailed in advance to explain I was SA in the past and so was a- more nervous and b- didn’t want to be seen by any men and they were fine with this and understood. Staff all made me feel at ease and explained what was going to happen and had a laugh and a joke with me about other stuff to take my mind off what was happening. I was asked to then wait for 45 minutes or so and then called back in and given the results straight away. I was worried I’d be sent home and have to wait for ages in sort of limbo land. I was told it was a cyst and was nothing to worry about and as I’d recently lost a fair bit of weight, it had come to the surface and would likely disappear. Which it did. I also made sure to wear clothing that was easy to remove, I wore a sports bra as that was easier to keep taking on and off and trousers and a top/ jumper. I saw other woman who had worn a dress and they were having to change into a gown or they’d have just been in tights and their knickers. So something to think about when getting dressed tomorrow. I didn’t take anyone with me, as it would have made me feel more nervous, but I saw others there who had done this. Do you have someone you can take with you who can drop you off and park, or is there a park and ride service? I arrived super early for mine as parking is a nightmare at my hospital too (especially BB and I can’t park in standard spaces) so sat in the coffee shop for like 30 minutes. I’m deaf, but if you like music, take headphones and use that to sort of zone out until you are called in. Finally I planned a treat for after. I went into town and bought my favourite cake, a new dress and then went to M&S and bought some dinner and food I wouldn’t buy unless it was a special occasion. So I knew I had this to look forward to after. I really hope the news is similar to what mine was, that you find a space quickly and have a nice a time as one can at this sort of appointment. Plus are able to do something fun after as a reward for being an adult and doing horrible but potentially life saving, adult stuff.

Unfortunately all my family are busy so I'm on my own, but the hospital is only a 10 minute drive from my sister's house so I plan on going there afterwards to hang out with her cat and get my favourite takeaway food! Could you park at your sisters and walk/ catch a bus? Would that make parking easier? Enjoy the cat fussing after, I have 5 cats and they make wonderful stress relievers and distractions. I’m healthy in the sense I haven’t had any cysts or issues in that regard, but I have many chronic health conditions. Thankfully none are anything like cancer or life threatening, so it’s all good.

Well done for getting checked & not just hoping it will get better! I found a lump at the end of August in my armpit, got checked a few days later at my gp after the bank holiday weekend. Nurse wasn’t happy with it so put me on the 2 week fast track referral. Went in on the 16th sept, had a physical examination by a surgeon with a breast care nurse present. Was told he could feel my lymph nodes so went straight in for mammogram. Mammogram showed an additional tiny lump buried deep in my breast which no one could feel (hence why mammograms are so important!) then had ultrasound straight after to look at & the radiologist did a core biopsy under my boob and in my armpit. Absolutely nothing to worry about if they want to do this, they like to test the tissue as these lumps can be all sorts of things. Didn’t hurt, just a bit sharp where she gave me anaesthetic. My results came back a week later, unfortunately I do have breast cancer but I was dealt with super quickly. Diagnosed on a Friday & had all my scans/appointments through by the Tuesday. You’re never a strain on the nhs! This is exactly what they’re here for! Mine isn’t too bad, I’m stage 2 so got 12 weeks of weekly chemo then it drops to 3 weekly for the last 4 cycles then surgery. I still consider myself so lucky because my breast lump was too small to feel & im 8 years too young for a mammogram. So if I hadn’t found the lump in my armpit who knows where I’d have ended up, it doesn’t bear thinking about!

I had the same roughly 3 years ago, although my appointment took way longer to materialise. I had a breast surgeon palpate my breast, then an ultrasound and then got discharged as they concluded the lump was a milk gland. As you’re under 35, they probably won’t do a mammogram so no extensive boob squishing for you. Last year (at 34), I found a lump. I had a fast track appointment through my work private medical and saw a consultant who did a breast exam with his hands. There was also a lovely female nurse in the room too. He said “I hate saying this cos it makes me sound like a cowboy, but I suspect you just have very dense breast tissue. I’m gonna send you round to ultrasound to get scanned”. So I then went to ultrasound, the female doctor and her tech/nurse/not sure, scanned me and found absolutely nothing other than dense breast tissue. I went back in to see the consultant and he just gave me a letter confirming what I’d been told and that was that. Just advised to keep checking myself regularly and if I notice any changes, to see my GP.

I've got weird tuberous breasts (which I call my "tubular boobular") (and I know that name will one day come back to haunt me when I accidentally mention it in front of a medical professional) so I was very worried about the logistics of a mammogram. I've recently been through this after finding a lump. Was seen at outpatients by a doc who examined me, drew on me where the lump was and we talked about my medical history. I was then sent up to a different part of the hospital where they did an ultrasound. Turns out my left breast implant has a bit of a bulge in it but nothing to worry about so I was sent on my way.

It depends where you go and how busy so it could be an hour or three.Ive been up for three appointments all benign you see the consultant he checks then you either have mammogram or ultrasound and you might have biopsy the local anaesthetic just stings and the biopsy is like a hole punch.Ive only had to have one of my breast lump removed as it was quite big.Good luck to you if you have any questions write them down because you sometimes can get flustered while being examined and it is quite stressful.

I was panicked when they wanted to do a biopsy there and then and then they wrote that I "refused" one and I had to get one at a later date. I just said I was unsure because it floored me that you can go in for what you're expecting to be a scan and it turns into a medical procedure. But the biopsy was actually okay, and I'm super squeamish and have a low pain tolerance, just tender for a few days after. I had "abnormal debris" in what they thought was "cyst" then when they checked it out it was just a fatty deposit thing, non-cancerous. So try not to worry initially.

I went for last year for what turned out to be a fatty mass. The whole thing was fine. The only advice I would give you is Don't wear a blouse- i had to keep taking my top off, and buttons were a pain, t-shirt or jumper is best.

Happened to me when I was 26. All I had was the ultrasound, no mammogram or biopsy. The person was very kind and it didn't take long, and they were able to tell me on the spot that it was just blocked ducts, nothing serious at all. Apparently this is really common for hormonal reasons if you've been under intense stress - which I definitely had as I had experienced a major bereavement a couple of months prior. I wish the GP had told me 'We'll get it checked out, but there's a really likely common, benign explanation for this' rather than just 'Yeah we'll need to get that checked out', given that they were fully aware of the extreme stress I'd been under (which was causing various other health complications too).

I just experienced this recently. I had an examination with a Doc where we talked medical history and then they felt the lump. I then had an ultrasound scan of the lump where the Radiologist said they weren’t that worried by how it looked but decided to biopsy it anyway there and then. I went home after that so was in and out in about an hour. It was a little bit uncomfortable but they used local anaesthetic and I took some paracetamol after and drove myself home. I went back in just over a week later for results. The biopsy showed it was cancer so I had a mammogram and a breast MRI scan at that point. Hope all goes well with your appointment and it turns out to be something benign. Hopefully parking will be easier so early, they tend to get busier later in the day.

This is what happened to me: 1. Signed in at the desk 2. Went in to see a Dr who did a manual check 3. Sent for an ultrasound where they found nothing abnormal 4. Went in to see the dr who explained it was all normal breast tissue but as I had lost weight that was why it felt abnormal.

I don't know what they will do to examine you as I don't have breasts. But I have had cancer. Firstly screw the parking, I get that you fixating on that rather than the matter in hand. I had bladder cancer and was given 6 to 12 months to live, if the treatment wasn't successful. They told me that on my 48th birthday, it was during the first lockdown, I sat there crying in an empty car park because I couldn't get my mate's podcast on the car radio. The truth is that I was terrified. It really is OK to be terrified, we are all scared of the unknown. Also, don't put on a brave face for anyone. I am sat here holding back the tears, crying is actually awesome, I do it a lot. Look at it like this, whatever the outcome, tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. Take every day as it comes and live every day to the fullest. I don't celebrate my birthday any longer, I celebrate my rebirth day, the day they told me I was in remission and I got to ring that bell. Whatever happens you will be fine in the end. If the results are negative, don't let cancer define who you are because that is the worst part about it.

As you are young and young women have dense breast tissue I would expect them to do an ultrasound aswell as a mammogram. If they see something they aren’t sure about they may well do a biopsy there and then but it’s not too much of a big procedure and doesn’t take long at all. ☺️

Someone else said the general advice is to only do a mammogram on anyone under 35 if deemed necessary, which would track with my own experience which was the Christmas before covid so only a couple of years after you (though those couple of years could also have been when advice changed)

I went through this last year, fast track cancer appt and all. I was there about an hour, and this covered: Consultation with doctor, who graded the lump Ultrasound, technician graded the lump Review with doctor again, who told me their grading (2/3 out of 5) and that I would go back in to the technician for a biopsy Biopsy (super quick - just numbing cream and a punch needle thing). I got my results in the post within about a week or so. It was really efficient - I had a scare about 17 years ago and that was different - I had an ultrasound appt, then a separate review with the doctor a few weeks after.

Hey! I was in the same position as you September last year. 37 and all of a sudden one day a very painful lump popped up on my nipple. I was fast tracked to the breast clinic, got an appointment within 2 weeks. The first thing they did was send me in to a consultant who did a physical exam (lying down on the bed, top off, arms above your head). She felt around the lump and then sent me off for an ultrasound. I had to wait another hour or so before I got in to see the ultrasound tech who took a look at things. She said she couldn't see anything unusual (despite there being a very obvious lump) and sent me away with a "it's probably a blocked duct" Now unfortunately that blocked duct turned out to be much worse, and a year later I am almost through treatment for breast cancer. I had to push for another 3 months after that initial appointment to get seen again because I knew something was right. I really hope yours is a blocked duct or a cyst. There is also something called fibroadenoma, which is harmless as well. I only tell you about my experience because at 37 I was dismissed as being "too young for cancer", and that wasn't the case. If they tell you it is nothing, but you still don't feel comfortable, don't be afraid to go back again and again until you are confident you have been given the best advice The second time I went to the breast clinic I was given a mammogram and a biopsy. I'm not going to lie, the biopsy was incredibly painful and the mammogram very uncomfortable. I hope you don't have to experience either of those things, but be prepared. Read the letter twice, when I went to my local hospital they had a note on there saying that the breast unit had separate parking and to ask for a pass! In my case they did a physical exam, then you went into a separate room for a scan. Everyone was very kind and patient. Wear clothes that are easy to whip on and off, as faffing with buttons etc will just stress you out more. Deep breaths - whatever the result you will be cared for and shown compassion, don't be embarrassed.

A biopsy is standard procedure. First they’ll have a feel and do an ultrasound though, make sure you wear something easy to get in and out of! They’ll take you to a room where you strip to the waist, then wear a rather fetching cape that Velcros up at the front. A consultant will come and have a feel and a prod and poke. Not very dignified but it’s their job! My consultant was male, but a female nurse was there as well. After that they take you for an ultrasound, which is not uncomfortable. You just relax on the bed while they scan you, but the jelly is cold and they do press quite hard. Usually they’ll do the biopsy straightaway in the same room. They don’t usually tell you to come back because apparently a lot of people don’t come back! The biopsy isn’t as bad as you think. They numb you first and the injections are tiny, they sting but nothing much. Once you’re numb they’ll take some biopsies guided by ultrasound. You honestly don’t feel anything except pushing, but it does make a very loud click that makes you jump. They might ask you to distract yourself by wiggling your toes! Once the biopsy is done, a nurse will lean on you for about 5 minutes to reduce any bleeding and bruising. They’re very apologetic about this! Once the biopsy is done you’ll get the results back quickly, mine were within a few days each time. Something else to note is that breast tissue can be very dense at that age, so mammograms don’t necessarily show anything useful. My lump was nearly 3cm and didn’t show up on a mammogram, even though it was visible through my skin. It did show up on the ultrasound and MRI though. Despite this, they still like sending you for mammograms! Mine was cancer which is obviously not the outcome anyone wants, but surgery, chemo and radiotherapy later, I’m all clear and have been for 6 years. I was 35 when diagnosed (on my birthday). Good luck, fingers crossed it’s just nothing but if it is, you’ll be looked after amazingly well. I have yearly mammograms and MRIs and will do until I’m 50, then it just changes to mammograms.

I had an appt a few years ago. The GP did a breast exam and put me in for a referral to the clinic. I got a phone call that night and they saw me that week. I had an ultrasound, the technician was lovely very calming and answering any questions. And within the week I received a letter confirming I was okay, they did say at the appt they couldn’t see anything and felt everything was fine but would confirm with a letter.

a had a little lump that i was referred to an ultrasound for – during the scan they assumed it was a cyst and usually they pierce it and let it leak out so to say. mine didn't so they took a biopsy, turned out to be benign and probably still a cyst just an older one with thicker walls. you're doing the right thing getting it checked, and you should be proud of yourself. a friend had a cancerous lump removed earlier this year, it was really straightforward and the prognosis is very good. it's so much better to address it early so well done.

At your age they'll most likely do a physical exam and an ultrasound. The only thing that caught me off-guard when I had my first breast clinic appointment (I was 31) was that they did a biopsy there and then. With that in mind, I'd advise you make sure you have some painkillers on hand just in case, and have someone else drive you if you possibly can. Aside from it not being something that's pleasant to go through without anyone there to comfort you afterwards, it's also not something that makes driving particularly pleasant. The only other thing I'd suggest is to remember to breathe. This appointment won't change anything; there is a lump, it is what it is, and it's better to know as soon as possible to either put you on the track for treatment or to put your mind at rest. Worrying about something that hasn't happened yet is a futile endeavour (though not doing so is easier said than done, of course!) Above all, I sincerely hope everything is okay and the lump is nothing to worry about.

I found another lump a few weeks ago. At the hospital I had a nurse practitioner do an examination, she compared the feel of both breasts and also asked me where I found the lump. I then had a mammogram and then ultrasound. They gave me the all clear at the end of the appointment. This is the 4th time I've been through this, the first time they removed a lump which was found to be benign and the others they could tell the lumps were benign without the need for surgery. Each time I was treated with dignity and the process from initial GP appointment to all clear was very fast.

I’d aim not to drive if you can manage it - parking will often end up being more than a taxi/uber (depending how far from the hospital you live of course). Here's what happened to me. Everything was done during the one appointment: Talk to the surgeon, explain what you've found, and they will manually examine it and almost certainly (even if they think it's benign) order a mammogram and ultrasound. They'll do the mammogram, most likely both sides, even if one seems fine. They'll do an ultrasound, again both sides. If there's a lump they may do an initial biopsy. That involves a quick injection of the local anaesthetic, then a thicker needle is inserted, guided using the ultrasound, to grab a piece of the lump. That's kind of uncomfortable rather than painful, as you've had the anaesthetic, but is sore afterwards. You'll probably go back to the surgeon, and they'll explain what they've found, and what the plan is to deal with it, if anything is needed. Even if they decided it was clearly something benign, they'll get the biopsy tested and you'll hear back on that in a few weeks. It might be that they can't identify it, so will want to remove it to be sure, but it'll end up being benign. I've had one of those. I've had cysts multiple times that they could identify with the ultrasound, and therefore did not need to remove. And I've had a papilloma in a duct that they could identify, but still decided to remove (as there were other symptoms involved). SO it could go several ways even if all is well. But by the time you leave, you should have a good idea of what the issue is, and a plan, or tentative plan to deal with it. Best of luck.

It’s scary isn’t it, but you’re doing the right thing by getting it checked. They’ll make you whip em out while everyone leaves the room, then they’ll lay you flat and examine you both sides, lifting your arm over your head and poking around your armpit too. They will likely give it an ultrasound, and they can tell a LOT from that, so that might be the end of the appointment. But if they’re not completely sure it’s a nothing burger, they may biopsy it. This isn’t super pleasant but they do put local anaesthetic in (worst bit) and it’s over fairly quickly. Results take a few weeks sometimes, they’ll likely call you back to deliver the news either way - I was sure it was bad news because they wouldn’t tell me anything over the phone but nope! All fine! I have- and it turned out to be all completely ok, no treatment needed. I had a mammogram- basically stand in front of a big machine whilst a nurse manoeuvres your breast between two plates which squish it slightly whilst it’s scanned. Feels a bit odd, uncomfortable but not actually painful or anything. Staff are almost guaranteed to be lovely and of course they’ve seen it all before. I think I had a manual exam too. They told me while I was there that it was all ok and nothing to worry about. If you don’t get told that, then don’t panic- whether it’s that more tests are needed or even some sort of diagnosis, chances are you’ll be absolutely fine. X
