As a fairly regular visitor to Budapest, I’ll give you my opinion. Both. But for different reasons. Budapest is “real”. Prague feels to a visitor like a picture postcard. A beautiful old town (now basically an enormous tourist trap) with a bunch of nondescript suburbs attached to it. It almost feels that nobody actually *lives* in the “numbered” districts of Prague (even though they do). To me it basically feels like another Bruges. Budapest though is a living city. Yes there’s the Buda Castle district, but even as a tourist you’re spending most of your time in Pest and seeing the city and the people who live there. It’s an actual *experience*. Where I would say Prague has the edge over Budapest is the day trips. Karlovy Vary, Kutna Hora, Cesky Krumlov and even Brno all doable within a day, plus Bohemian/Saxon Switzerland. Budapest does have good day trip options but I don’t feel they are as standout as the ones in Czechia.

most of hungarians living outside the center. budapest is huge kinda same size as prague. both cities are kindda same. post socialist city with beautiful center and there are many fuckin shite districts , lots and lots of panel housing estates. most people live in these areas. budapest and prague are really expensive especially for local people. As a tourist, it may not be that so expensive, but with some of the worst salaries in Europe, it's fucking expensive. Prague is a richer city.

What's the point of this? Neither the average Czech or Hungarian can do long term travel.
