Scranton is an absolute scum hole. Peter was a rockstar worth millions. Why would he live in this shitty area? Scranton and the surrounding area of the Poconos is absolutely infested with New Yorkers. I think he got bad advice. If somebody recommended Northeast Pennsylvania to get away from New York, They were wrong because Northeast PA is infested with New Yorkers. It’s all transplanted in New Yorkers.
I have an interesting story about Peter Steele. My friend and I were walking back to the parking lot after their concert and saw a small group of people crowding around a park bench. We stopped to see what the commotion was. Peter was signing autographs and chatting with fans. When we walked up, he looked at us and asked, "Could you two beauties do me a favor? Can you go to the tour bus, just tell the guy I said to let you on ... there's a tray of cold cuts and a jug of red wine, can you grab those for me, and bring them here?" My friend and I look at each other and agree to this request.
We get on the tour bus, and we're like freaking out, saying to each other, "is this really happening?" I see the tray of cold cut subs and grab it and my friend grabs this huge jug of red wine. We go back to the park bench and he says, "beautiful, just beautiful, thank you!" Then asks me to pass the cold cuts around for the rest of the fans. The wine was for him. We all then sat around eating subs, listening to him tell stories as he chugged from the wine jug.
Got a picture with him and he signed my T- Shirt I bought earlier. He was a super chill guy that loved his fans! Anyways, just wanted to share my odd, cold cut sandwich story with Peter Steele 🖤
I met him outside a show in Philly in 1994, me and 2 random girls. I knocked on the bus door and asked the big bouncer guy if Pete was around. A minute later he came off the bus and hung with us in the cold for about 20 minutes. Such a nice guy. That was my first if 10 times seeing them live.
Omg that’s amazing!!!! I have a strangely similar but different story with Iron Maiden. Ran in to blayze Bailey coming out of the bathroom at the hotel next to the venue. He recognized me from the front row (I’m a super fan and know every lyric to every song). I got to meet the rest of the band, got back stage passes to their next show and then got to hang out with all of them for a whole night. It was freaking insanely amazing.
Awesome to know that Pete was just as amazing of a human!!!!
Dude, I was just reading through his wiki [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter\_Steele](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Steele) and found this
>Steele stood 6 ft 8 in (203 cm) tall,[^(\[7\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Steele#cite_note-Starpulse-7) giving him a menacing stage appearance. Despite that perception, Steele admitted to suffering from [stage fright](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage_fright), which he overcame by drinking alcohol before shows, and by drinking red wine when on stage
Perhaps he needed the red wine because he was nervous but wanted to talk to you guys.
That’s a great story! I saw them at CBGB’s when I was doing an internship in NYC at a metal magazine, went back stage and met him; I was with a group of three women, and they all wanted to take a picture sitting in his lap. When it came to my turn, as a 6’, 250lb guy, I told him “don’t worry, I won’t sit in your lap,” to which he replied “ah it’s cool, just don’t fart” 😂 It was the one picture of the set where he was smiling lol
Such a kind, generous and hilarious guy - and his hand felt like a catcher’s mitt on my shoulder. We miss you Pete 🖤💚
Fuck man he was such a character, seemed like a truly decent guy. I'll forever be sad I never got to see him perform. He was in severe pain before he ultimately died (sepsis from diverticulitis) but he didn't want to leave his cats alone to go to the hospital 😓
lol, the way he said cold cuts with his NY accent is always what I'll remember from that experience. Trust me, I was questioning the motives in the beginning, but he turned out to be a really cool guy that genuinely seemed like he cared about his fans.
It sounds more like Barnes. Corpsegrinder had a little energy to his vocals where Barnes sounds sleepy, and Nathan Explosion’s vocals are more sleepy than energy.
Batman + Dethklok = [Batmetal](https://youtu.be/SDea7laHD4E?si=OuxmAsqJsQEPry38)
Seriously watch this if you like either one. The animation is hilarious and awesome. They did a few Dethklok songs.
Funny story about him: he posed for Playgirl thinking he would get millions of women hot and bothered over his pictorial.
Then he found out Playgirl’s #1 demographic is not women, but gay men.
Public internet was still in it's very early wild frontier days when I first was introduced to Type O back in 96. After hearing his voice I was curious as to what he looked like. That pictorial was the first result that popped up. I got to see what ALL of him looked like immediately, lol.
*"I did a full spread for Playgirl Magazine*. I mean spread man, I pulled my butt apart and stuff. I was totally nude. it was weird..."

Christopher Hall from Stabbing Westward did it too. My high school boyfriend was a big fan and his college age sister bought a copy just so she could flash his junk at her brother. Cheering him up after that was difficult. I don't know if he ever got to the point where he could listen to their music without seeing that wang in his head.
I went to a ladies night/all male dance review at a bar years ago, and there was an older lady selling cigarettes, and had with a in the bathroom passing it around. It was fun chaos.
One of my prized possessions is an autographed copy of that issue. I got him to sign it at a Carnivore show. He laughed when I handed it to him and said when it came out, his mother called him a pig.
Was literally just commenting (on a football meme sub of all places) about Type O and saw this post directly after. Coincidence or algorithm….hmmmm.
Also god damn he was gorgeous. Saw them live when I was 17 and it was transcendent.
I got to see Type O in Wichita, Kansas around 1998 at a bingo hall... It was snowing so bad. We thought they were going to cancel the show. We're out front waiting. Somebody comes out and looks and goes back inside. Yeah there's like 25 people out here in the parking lot. Shortly after they open the doors and it was an awesome show. The stage was about 2' and his head is scraping drop ceiling.
I was at that show too! March 24, 1997. I was young, it was the first time I saw a few things so it was a transformative experience… opened my eyes in a lot of ways. I wish I could go back.
Also the venue was Crown Bingo Arena, which actually hosted some pretty amazing acts for a short time in the 90’s.
That's awesome! Want Snot the other band? I remember I was 19 and couldn't drink but that was a super surreal show for me... The band, venue, crowd size. Never had another similar experience.
When I met my wife we had so many similarities. Music was probably the number one. After we had been hanging out and dating we got into each other's shit. Past experiences, favorite concerts, kinks, all the shit that leads up to a healthy relationship. She found it very very sexy that I was way into Type-O, I found it cool that she was too. She later confided in me that she had a Pete Steele dildo (which is a real thing) and was nervous. Now I am no Pete Steele. But when she told me that I was like... "Well I can't fucking blame ya." So she decided to marry me and my dick is adequate. RIP dude who plays a cello like a fuckin base. You are missed my man.
I once got tickets to a Type-O show and I invited a friend. He showed up dressed in this completely inappropriate preppy outfit. When we walked by the fans who were in line to go in, somebody hissed at him.
We didn't go to the show after all.
Couple of buddies of mine actually did make it down to see them in Boston in the early aughts. It was in a super-sketchy neighborhood, their car got towed, and nobody had a cell phone. 😂
Neon Nightmare comes close. It’s Nate Garrett from Spirit Adrift’s solo project. There’s a little Carnivore in there as well as the blatant Type O worship
The only shirt I still own that survived from the 90s is a TON October Rust/Drab Four shirt. It’s a good bit faded and it no longer fits me, but I refuse to get rid of it. I have many great memories with their music as the soundtrack and me wearing that particular shirt.
Pantera’s my favorite band and I never got to see them in the 90s. I saw Pantera 2.0 a couple of years ago and it was awesome. Yeah it would’ve been better if it had Vinnie and Dime, but honestly, nobody seemed to care. The mood at the show was perfect; everybody (myself included) was fucking amped to be able to see Pantera on stage, even if it’s not the lineup we all wanted.
I got to see the original lineup of Black Sabbath, Pantera, and the Deftones as one of my first concerts back in 1999. Talk about setting the bar high.
I saw them years ago when I 17, and then I saw them this summer opening for Metallica (sans Dimebag) and it wasn't that much of a difference honestly. Maybe I'm middle aged and nostalgic but the performance this summer could've been a stand alone.
Saw them play in Waterloo, Ontario when I was 15. My bestie and I bought tickets not realizing where they were playing and when - we lived in Toronto and the show was on a Sunday night (school night). Parents were cool with the mistake and let us take the Greyhound and stay with friends’ aunt overnight to return the next day.
Show was awesome, secondary school teachers went on strike for 2 weeks starting that Monday morning, so it all worked out
IKR!? That’s how we wound up buying the tickets - we just assumed it was in Toronto. It was 1997, found out from a concert listing in the back of some random magazine (no internet at home yet) and had to travel downtown to buy the tickets. Now to get downtown it used to cost $1.35, and back then nickels had pictures of beavers on them. Give me 5 beavers for a moose, you’d say! Now where was I…oh right! We had no clue until we had tickets in hand and it listed the venue on the tickets. I’m guessing maybe a booking fell through for some reason and the Waterloo location worked for the tour schedule 🤷♀️ wasn’t a bad venue, a bit smaller than the Opera House (if you’re familiar)
Nice; yeah I love the Opera House, Type O in a venue that size sounds like it would’ve been a good show.
I didn’t start going to concerts until 1998 and didn’t get really into Type O until the early 2000s, so this one wouldn’t have been on my radar. Never saw them and I regret it now.
Erie caught a good handful of metal shows in the late 90s early 2ks. But mostly we went to Cleveland/pittsburgh/Buffalo to catch big headliners
Mushroomhead played Erie regularly, saw Marilyn mason there too. Ozzy, Korn, Deftones and others.
Pittsburgh we got to see static x, fear factory, System of a Down, lords of acid, praga khan, ozzfests, etc.
I remember the Manson concert and all of the concerned parents, lol
I did get to see Mighty Mighty Bosstones with the Dropkick Murphys in ‘97. Show was excellent but my ears were ringing for two days
I was in high school when his Playgirl photos came out, and the girls in my friend group passed that magazine around for *months*. It was all “whose turn is it to jerk it to Peter Steele for the next few days.”
My all time fav band. I’m in NYC and have been following them since the early days. I became somewhat acquainted with Pete and the band (they were super approachable and visible around the city) - not only an excellent band, but even better people. Pete was a gem. I have a million stories.
He was exceptionally humble but a little liquid courage (and other substances) would energize him and give him some confidence. Unfortunately that rush to be social and liked and more extroverted was detrimental to his health.
I commented below but hello, fellow NY’er. They really were approachable guys! I love that Duff’s still collects money each year for North Shore Animal League in Pete’s memory
One time at Duffs Pete played Hungry like the Wolf by Duran Duran and had the entire band singing along! Such an epic moment! He also had a tab open and dead panned “i expect all of you to cut my checks tomorrow! My phone bill is due” Oh Pete. We miss you brother.
They did not take themselves seriously at all, and I loved that so much about them.
I remember seeing Type O at some place in Brooklyn - not sure of the venue, would have to pull out my scrapbook of stubs - anyway, right after the show, they loaded some equipment into a big old car, Pete got behind the wheel and used a bullhorn to yell at everyone that was still hanging out haha
Was able to catch Silvertomb at St Vitus right before COVID shut the world down, they were pretty great.
Almost didn’t go, but ended up seeing them in 2007 in Worcester, MA. What a show! The guy was like 6’8” and just enormous in real life. They sounded so good live, and then just a few years later he died. Really glad I went and still talk about that night with my friends
Hugely underrated album. It was such a difficult time to get people to listen to albums no thanks to MTV falling off. Beautifully done and a must have for any collection.
I rip through that baby at least a dozen times from the end of Sept and aaaalllll through October. All Hallow's EP by AFI (as well as Art of Drowning and Black Sails), Earth AD/Walk Among Us, anything by Blitzkid, Phantasmagoria by The Damned, the dorky Nekromantix stuff, Koffin Kats... man, I got a nice solid 6-7 weeks of non-stop old school spook tunes. October Rust *always* kicks it off.
Little miss scare-all is one of the best all time Halloween songs no one has ever heard of.
I still listen to Bloody Kisses full album regularly. Phenomenal.
My seventeen yr old son has discovered type o negative and listens non-stop. Over the summer we were at a Ren faire and one of the performers was teasing him calling him the goth kid cause he was wearing a type o shirt, it made me giggle all day.
I was a recording artist in a past life, and Peter was an industry friend. Incredibly kind human being, and he always understood that fans were keeping a roof over his head. He was an appreciative and engaging guy. Had a huge influence on me as a young guy making his own career, and I took to heart his views on fans and what they mean to the artist.
I would do heinous things to see this band live now. They were one of my favorites back when I was a teen, completely rediscovered them as a 36 year old, huge huge fan, and was so sad to hear he had passed kinda long ago. Such an enduring sound. I rocked out to Life is Killing Me like 77 times this year according to Spotify. RIP Steele 🖤
Saw them open for Pantera in 1995. My boyfriend (now husband) and I were at the very front, only the security pit between us and the stage. Peter was such a massive presence. He had a barstool next to him with a huge bottle of red wine that he’d take long pulls from. At one point he made eye contact with me, bit his lower lip and grabbed his crotch.
My boyfriend yelled “Fuck yeah, that’s my girlfriend!” all proud.
Such a cool night.
What a goddamn dreamboat. I never got to see Type O live even though I was a fan since like 1995 and moved to NYC a few years before he passed. I’m 5’10 and would have melted if I ever saw him in person.
I saw Type O three times back in the day. I had all access at one of the shows and got to hang out with the band for a bit. Peter was the most physically intimidating human I've ever met. According to Google, he was 6'8", but he genuinely seemed MUCH larger than that. I saw him kneel down to take a picture with a dude in a wheelchair, and even on one knee, he dwarfed the guy. I have a picture of us together at that show, which I will not share, cause I look cringe as hell, but anyway...
To this day, I will still get on a TON kick every once in a while and spin October Rust on repeat for a few weeks. Flawless album.
I saw his side band cover Beatles tunes all night at a tiny little club on NYE somewhere near Brighton beach back around 98-99 I think. We knew his mailman who also happened to be the drum tech and he somehow got us on the list to get in. What a wild night and such a blur. Kick ass music though! Always loved Type-O so that was such a treat!!
As a fan of metal, industrial, post punk i never got in to Typo. Their whole sound is a place I don't want to visit. I can totally understand people being into them though. I too like miserable sounding music. But not them. I can admit I bought a ticket for Typo show. But went to see the opener Puya and left after they played. Had loads of acquaintances into them, and they were floored when they found out he was living in our town of Scranton, Pa when he passed. No one had any idea he was living amongst us.
I had a long sleeve type o negative shirt that I got at a concert they did with Pantera in 1995. I gave it to a girl I had a crush on. I never saw the girl or the shirt again 😂
I accidentally seen his ass decades ago. I was out of weed but the cute strippers across the street always have weed. Little did I know that T.O.N. played a show here and went home with some local strippers. So I walk over open the door because it's cracked and lo and behold.... They didn't see me and I just slowly backed out.
Type O is one of my favorite bands. 🖤💚🖤
Got to see them a few times and was lucky to meet them all as well. One of my most cherished photos is a pic of me and Pete.
October Rust was an impulse buy when it came out. It became one of my absolute favorite albums. There is no one else like them! I was so sad when Peter died.
