7600 rpm, 6 speed manual, Toyota reliability and can be picked up for a few grand. I predict the VVTLI/ GT-S will easily double in value once the new Celica gets release (if ever). If you've got 10 grand to burn and a barn I'd buy a bunch of low mileage 7th gens and sit on them.
I said 10 grand to burn, I wouldn't be surprised if they stay the same cost but I also wouldn't be surprised (and lean slightly in favour) of them doubling. Not enough to do it myself
Always get a chuckle when somebody thinks they discovered a hidden gem in the 7th gen Celica GTS. The reason why you can pick them up for a few gran is the engine is a but shit. The 2ZZ is plagued with oil leaks, oil starvation under hard cornering or high rpm and oil burning issues. The manual trans is problematic as well due to weak synchros.
I also doubt that you'll ever see the value go up much on the GTS. On top if the reliability issues, it was poorly received when it launched because the Si, Integra, Prelude, SRT-4, etc. were better. So you're not going to find a market for guys entering middle age reminiscing about their Celica GTS glory days.
> This, these cars werent special at all when they came out, there's no demand
It's why I always am skeptical of this attitude people have that any Brand new Celica will **definitely** be a turbo charged Awd monster... Cause most of the previous Celiacs were fairly sedate FWD cool but not really Cars.
Overpriced too. Look up the MSRP of the EM1 and GS-R. Its almost painful to think that people chose the Celica over the Honda options. You could either get a EM1 for $4000 less, or the leather clad GS-R for the same price. For those familiar with the B16A2, B18C1, and GS-R 5spd, the idea that someone would choose the Celica over the Hondas is asinine.
A lot of those issues you can bullet proof. Especially the oil starvation issues. Baffled oil pan is the way.. gonna get one from Fennsport (UK Toyota Tuner) soon for my car
Baffled oil pan will not oil burning or weak synchro issue and is not something you have to do for any of the competition. Not to mention, most of the competition had engines and transmissions capable of far more power than the GTS. If you're a glutton for oil burning punishment, at least rebuild a Prelude instead. Even if you can't get 4WS, its hands down the better engine and transmission.
Criminally underrated with a fantastic Yamaha designed engine and crisp 6-speed. In my 1st yr of college I got a 2000 Prelude SH and my buddy got the Celica GTS. We drove each other's cars often and it was immediately apparent to both of us that the Celica was the far better sports car. I loved driving that thing.
Japan made a "Type R" type version called the TRD Sports M. It had LSD, seam welded roof, full TRD suspension, additional oil cooler, blue or red seats with matching color on the steering wheel and door panels, TRD exhaust, TRD gauge cluster with 10,000RPM tachometer in the center and 240km/h speedometer. Made 200hp. I recently imported one to Florida. Better than the GT-S I had.
Craigslist lol. Back in 2015 I was bored so I picked one up on Craigslist for $3200, that was fun. Sadly those days are long gone
To this day it was one of my favorite cars, my wife hated it and we had a baby on the way so I replaced it with a 3rd gen GS350
It was overshadowed by damn near everything. It was essentially a worse version of the Si, but $4000 more expensive. Compared to the RSX-S, it was a joke. Toyota wanted Lexus money for a car with worse performance and build quality than a Honda, let alone an Acura.
It was not. GTS came out in 2000 and there absolutely nothing like it when it did. It was the first car to have headlights stretched up the fender (a style that would dominate the next generation of cars) and it blew the doors off the civic si. A closer comparison was the integra gsr (ITRs were too rare to realistically compete in the market). RSX S wouldn’t come out for another two years, which is when the WRX hit the market.
I just picked one up a month ago. Me and my dad are swapping out the clutch and Cvaxle as we speak. Got out of my tC that I’ve had for a long 4 years.. one my buddies has it now
Shame about the manual transmissions lack of strength. If the forums were anything to go by, you could break the case at stock power levels.
Some guy figured out a way to adapt the 5 speed from the early 90’s MR-2 turbo, but I’m not sure if it was ever really available to purchase.
I had a GT as my first car, ran forever, needed the bare minimum outside of general maintenance. Fun car. Terrible blind spots. Very practical, if you don’t need to move more than one person.
Sold it for a couple grand with 183k miles on it, still running great. No oil consumption issues on mine.
Would love another lift back sport compact, maybe once the preludes start to depreciate.
