What's up with having to clear your throat all the time?

Seems like in the last couple of years I'm clearing my throat ALL THE TIME. Drives me a little crazy sometimes.
JoeyKino@reddit
You should get checked for reflux - that was my problem. I only had bad heartburn and/or the nasty taste of reflux irregularly and didn't think much about it, until my co-worker (who is currently dealing with severe medical issues from long-term, untreated reflux) recommended I talk to my doctor. Now I'm on a nightly medication, I get that irregular heartburn even less often, and I don't do the throat-clearing thing.
Calvert-Grier@reddit
What Medication did they put you on? I got put on a two month course of Pantaprozole and it hasn’t seemed to help my situation all that much

worldinmy-eyes@reddit
Definitely sinuses.
And if I clear my throat when I’m on the phone with my 89 year old mom she will definitely always ask if I am sick. No. Just because I sneeze or clear my throat doesn’t mean I’m sick, mom.

Do you take blood pressure meds? Some have that side affect

The responses here range from random SNL references to indigestion. You should really seek medical advice if this is ongoing and you have tried changing your diet, taking digestive enzymes, etc.
Over a decade ago, my mother began to constantly clear her throat. She had some other issues, so I finally made her go to a doctor. She was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma (related to exposure to asbestos) and died 8 months later.

For me, I think it’s a little of post nasal drip and a little reflux.
IAmDaBadMan@reddit
Sounds like it could be post-nasal drip. Possibly some inflammation in your sinuses is causing a blockage that is making all of your mucus go down the back of your throat. Do you find yourself getting upper respiratory infections?
wyohman@reddit
It's often a symptom of acid reflux. Talk to your doctor
shell9898@reddit
Zyrtec in the morning and Flonase before bed helps control my post nasal drip. I used to clear my throat all the time and now notice that it’s mostly gone.

It’s called LPR reflux. Took me forever to get a diagnosis because I’m not a man and not overweight. But after treating that it’s much better.
fireflypoet@reddit
Where I am, regular gastro's won't deal it. You have to go to an ENT. Crazy. I am also not a man and not overweight.
temerairevm@reddit
I actually got diagnosed by an allergist because my GP, Gastro and ENT missed it.
The ENT I saw actually said “it can’t be LPR because that’s pretty much always overweight men”.
I ended up going back to Gastro and confirming it with endoscopy because I had other stuff going on that made medicating it complex.
fireflypoet@reddit
I am so sorry. So typical. I am now caught between my PCP's office, who tried to insist I get surgery for the hiatal hernia, and the gastro practice that says they never recommend surgery for small hh's. My sister in another state has one too, and her gastro says same. I do not want surgery. Despite meds and strict diet, I still have bad symptoms, though.
fortunatelyso@reddit
Thats reflux
fireflypoet@reddit
GERD, LPR, and hiatal hernia all could be part of these symptoms.

I thought it was just me. Most chocolate sends me into a 30-minute coughing and throat-clearing fit anymore. And I still refuse to give it up.

If you have GERD, you are supposed to avoid chocolate.

Post nasal drip, 'twas for me. Doc recommended allergy meds, zrytec or generic equivalent. It went away (mostly)! Highly recommend trying it out

Hey fellow gen X’er(79) here, please get a cancer screening; my mother developed a persistent cough, eventually a “benign” tumor was discovered in her throat when it became hard for her to swallow. They did a biopsy for precaution and ended up being stage4
BeWhovian@reddit
For me it's dairy. I realized a few years ago that my sinus issues and migraines were directly related to how much dairy I consumed. Once I dramatically cut down my dairy intake, all my issues (including constantly clearing my throat) magically disappeared.
Sadly every now and then I fall off the wagon and get a reminder of all the ways in which dairy products kick my arse.
Head-Reindeer-4082@reddit
Since my ACDF surgery in September I’ve felt the sensation of a lump in my throat on and off so that’s my reason.
tommyalanson@reddit
That should pass. My throat was “off” for a few months after due to the way they stretch it to the side during the surgery.
fishyfish1988@reddit
Only for an hour or two eating, or no? If it is eating-related, could be silent reflux. All the time could be post nasal drip. You’re officially old like me!
3rdgenerX@reddit
Yup after eating or drinking, they say it’s silent reflux from bad digestion, they say digestive enzymes help
mr_oof@reddit
For me it’s GERD and Famotadine. Apparently the acid wear on my teeth was/is so bad my dentist had me tagged as a possible bulimic! Im a 55yo, 250lb guy.
Tmettler5@reddit (OP)
F GERD. I want to be able to enjoy my favorite foods and a glass of bourbon every now and then and never know what will trigger it and how much. I also never know if I'll just have acid reflux, or if it will trigger vomiting...yuck.

It's allergies for me. When I got tested, on a scale of 1-10, I was at a 10 for nearly every native plant in my city. It's a treat traveling to a different city/environment where I'm actually able to breathe and my throat isn't full of mucus.

Make sure you stay hydrated. If it is reflux related… omeprazole seems to work miracles. However, your body adapts to it and you need more of it and can become dependent upon it. I’ve weaned myself off of it after many years and feel much better than the constant drainage and stomach issues.
Making sure to have small meals, avoid eating before bed, and drink plenty of water to hydrate - with lemon juice. The acid in your stomach is a signal to close the valve at the top of it. The lemon in the water helps trigger it.
