LHR just overly convoluted and difficult to get around. Just seems so incredibly disorganized and everything from checking to passport control to immigration just moves so unbelievably slow. Cramps, narrow corridors in many areas. However, I will digress it’s been several years and I know they’re slowly revamping the entire airport.
MAD is another one. I’m not a huge fan of. While terminal four is truly beautiful, again it just seems to take an overly long time to get around. The other terminals are cramped and super spread out.
As far as Favorites, AMS is very easy to get around and transit, and you definitely cannot be the duty-free shopping there. DEN is my favorite as far as a major connecting hub. The airport flow is very well for how large it is.
u/penelo-rig just commenting again to say i flew through LHR for the first time a few days back with no trouble. super rushed 2h connection between LGW and LHR and i got through security within 5 minutes and ran to the gate. i believe it was so fast because of the UK's new ETA system—it's annoying because it costs money to get in (even for a layover) but damn was it fast. got to my gate just before they started boarding
Only beef with AMS is how goddamn long it takes to walk anywhere. Get through immigration and want to go to a lounge? 15 min walk. Then need to get to your gate? 20+ minute walk to the other end of the airport.
Yea Madrid, the place itself is one of the easiest cities I have ever navigated.... but I didn't need a tour of the entire airport after landing before getting to the terminal... and leaving... no announcements have to watch a screen.. which they didn't update
Yeah, as I said, I haven’t been through four about seven or eight years. Did a connection from Madrid to Philadelphia via LHR. British Airways. On the first leg and American on the second leg.. T5 was definitely nice and spacious, but it just seemed like it took forever to get to the transit area to transit over to terminal 3. And terminal three was extremely dated with very low ceilings, tight corridors. And can’t even technically go to the gate after passing through the extremely slow passport control as they are blocked off until about 15 minutes before boarding. Just a very odd difficult airport.
Ugh, do they still make connecting passengers go through security again at LHR? I just remember waiting in a long-ass line and thinking, "literally everyone in this line has already been checked. WTF."
Yes, because the buses between the terminals are not treated as air side. They take passengers to the same security checkpoints that passengers entering the terminal from outside use.
It’s especially fun going through security again after you’ve just landed from a 9 hour flight. They really need an airside train between all of the terminals.
\+1 for DEN - people like to rag on it, but ultimately it's a well-thought-out airport. Even better now that security has been revamped - I've never waited more than 5 minutes in the past 3 months of heavy travel. My only request is that they add a walkable option between concourses.
The security situation at DEN is miles better now than it was before. That’s not saying much though! They’re doing a good job with the renovations too. It was starting to show its age badly.
I had a connection via LCY to LHR and it was easier to exit LCY and train over (as an inexperienced yank) than it was to navigate door-to-gate at LHR.
(Also big thanks to the LCY agents who saw a terrified dude and told me exactly how to get to LHR in 45 minutes.)
As a PX.
Intl:
- Worst: CLJ somehow nudging out GRU
- Best: CDG because it exemplifies everything I love about the absolute adeptness of the ineptitude of the French and the number of fucks they have to give about it.
- Honourable mention to AMS and ICN for getting people thru the system.
US:
- Worst: CLT nudging out OAK because I haven't flown there in a decade. In actuality, we all know it's ORD.
- Best: OKC because I'm an hour from home, but I am a sucker for DEN, including old Stapleton.
I enjoy flying from OKC, but I'm not sure how it is for arrivals and dealing with car rentals. All the renovations in the last decade have made it a much better experience for me. We even have a direct flight to CUN now. Haven't flown it yet, but looking forward to it.
I lived in DEN when they built DIA. I liked Stapleton, but it was a pit. Before they opened DIA for air traffic, United invited pax to come out and tour the new airport. We wandered around for hours and rode the train back and forth. Before 9/11, the terminal had great restaurants. We'd go out there sometime just for a meal and plane spotting.
Rentals were super easy at OKC both arriving and departing. They have a little bus that runs very frequently and takes you back and forth. It was very quick and I had 0 issues as a very inexperienced traveler.
That's good to know. They built that rental facility about 5 years ago. Before that, you could walk to your rental from the terminal. The new rental facility looks nice from the road and there's some interesting art inside.
Some places with remote rental facilities are a pain, so I hoped that wasn't the case here.
I LOVE CDG T1. It is brutalist of architecture and aviation romance at its finest. Like Tegel, useless for today’s frequencies, flows and tastes, but I love it nevertheless.
I wasn't impressed with Schipol in 2015, but it was great this summer. CDG really is love/hate, but the TGV is such a civilized way to travel. Or was, the last time we were there.
For 25 years work had me in the air monthly. Close to retiring, so it's mostly leisure travel now.
Fair question. I worked for a company on Alameda back in the mid 00's and would fly in/out of OAK quarterly. It was actually great to just pop over that little bridge onto the island rather than taking the tunnels.
As I said, it's been at least a decade since I flew through there, but in the mid 00's, the security line was a cluster-fuck. Everything in the gate areas was that dull color of beige and very few places to enjoy a drink or get food before the flight. I'm sure they've renovated since then, like OKC has, and it's a lot better now. I'd almost certainly take it over SJC.
Interesting. Yes, they've definitely improved it. SW has gotten so big in OAK that they now use part of Terminal 1 in addition to all of T2. Security is always a breeze. Have never had more than a 15 minute wait any time of day. And there are now local restaurants (as opposed to generic chains). I think you probably wouldn't recognize it any more. New (well 10 years old?) BART extension so super easy. Not being a cheerleader for them, but I don't find it missing anything. Except more long distance flights like an OAK-JFK or something. They have a ton of flights to Hawaii, but nothing east of the Mississippi. I remember BA started a non-stop there to London (which I took), and Norweigan (rip) flew several non-stops to Europe. All gone now. The only international is a few flights to Mexico. Anyway, doesn't matter.
It's less the facility than the staff. I've never met a group of people who collectively decide to make other people miserable on such a large scale as UAL's Chicago employees. Which is weird, because Chicago is a pretty cool city to be in.
OAK is wayyy better now. I live in the Bay Area and will choose OAK over SFO every time. Parking is walking distance, security is fast, they added a ton of food places, it’s small enough you can get across the entire airport in a 10 mins walk. They have less weather related delays than SFO.
I hate Heathrow with a passion but the worse experience was the one time in Holland that I flew out of AMS. Just the one time but ohh my god that was painful. I was glad I had seen how bad it was and went there 3 hours early. I barely made my flight to BCN.
GRU is the only place I have had an hour walk between gates. And by walk, I mean speed walk/hustle…and it still took an hour. Plus, the inability to flush toilet paper and instead throwing it in the 40-gallon waste basket just adds to the fun.
Manila, and it’s not a close second. Specifically the old Terminal 4 (Domestic Terminal) which was so bad that when they closed it to remodel, they ended up changing plans and demolished the whole thing.

Flying to NRT, HKG, TPE and HAN early next year. Looking forward to that experience!
I have a soft spot for Dulles. That Eero Saarinen terminal gets me every time, and I haven’t found it to be particularly arduous any time that I’ve flown out of it.
I have no love for AUS. Feels crowded and cramped. Obnoxious tech bros everywhere; and the most expensive food that I’ve come across in any airport $20 for a chicken sandwich? Give me a break.
Mixed feelings about LAS, PHX, and DFW. LAS with the multiple people movers is a pain to navigate. At PHX most of the food options require leaving security. DFW, for how massive it is has remarkably mediocre food selection.
It really speaks to how bad Miami is when people will willingly fly into another objectively dogshit airport because it's less dogshit. The only thing FLL has going for it is "not Miami"
It’s an abomination of an airport. It’s a sprawling nightmare with bare bones amenities that is in constant disrepair. Also, whoever thought up the idea of each concourse being isolated with its own security checkpoint should be taken out back and dealt with.
OMG yes! They built Dulles on farmland (which, at the time was) in the middle of nowhere and could have designed it any way they wanted. And so they came up with a ridiculous system that would only make sense if you had to plonk down an airport against the side of a mountain, or along the banks of a river, or to avoid razing 10k homes and businesses. You had to get on these weird elevated busses that drove passengers from the ticketing terminal to your departure terminal, creating a completely unnecessary 30 step. Also it looks like it was designed by big fans of that cartoon, The Jetsons. This airport is well named after one of the architects of the Vietnam war.
I always feel like I’m in a dystopian SciFi movie/videogame on those.
Like the character from Doom traveling from one level to the next somewhere on Mars.
I have seen the future, my friends, and it smells like axle grease and body odor…
MIA is my least favorite airport. Bad amenities, air conditioning never seems to work and it is far to spread out. Every time I have connected through MIA it has been a fiasco. One time coming back from Barbados they routed all passengers to landslide, even connecting passengers. I had been screened in BGI but now I wasn’t sterile so I got to go through the worst TSA screening I’ve ever experienced. F MIA!
BER - Berlin Brandenburg. Has to be one of the worst airports I’ve been to and it only opened in 2020. Starts with security only processing one person at a time, escalators going down but only stairs to go up, toilets located in the most random locations, and gates numbered in a completely illogical method.
I flew through Charlotte for the first time in 10 years and couldn't believe how busy it had gotten. I told my wife I enjoyed my layovers in Charlotte before but it was just way too congested now.
Last time I went through Charlotte I think we landed in Greensboro and just had to walk the rest of the way to the terminal.
Not really, but our gate was under construction so we had a long walk on the ramp just to get to the door, then I found out I was at the opposite side of the airport from my connecting flight.
It's nice that it will be better soon (it looked like they are putting in a tram) but getting to the rental car area was a pain when I flew into Sky Harbor.
I’ve flown through CLT twice… and been delayed a total of >24hrs in those two layovers, no rocking chair is saving that, especially when I fly through ATL 10x as much and rarely get delayed at all, and when I am delayed it’s always less than 2hrs
The terminal inside is meh, whatever. But what crackhead designed the layout?
Also, come on now - why are you landing a regional jet with an E gate assignment over on the west-most runway?
For how big the Phoenix metro area is and how busy the airport is overall, I’m amazed I’ve never stood in the TSA pre-check line more than 2-3 minutes.
Even though the city is completely wrecked, you managed to connect and, sort of, expressed yourself online. I am as impressed as if I had seen someone from Chernobyl online trying to mumble something. Baarrvo!
We actually prefer YUL over YYZ by a Canadian mile.... apart from the occasional return arrival at midnight and dealing with customs and baggage at that point in my grumpiness....
If only I had a choice. I live in Saskatchewan, basically anytime I fly out east I have to connect through Toronto. Anytime I fly west I have to connect through Calgary. And sometimes I go east and still have to connect through Calgary.
Agree. Difficult and expensive to get from SFO to Burlington, so we tried YUL. Horrible. Dirty, and crowded. And our pickup was stuck in like 1 hour traffic at the entrance to the airport.
Let’s not take any chances. Let’s just do it right and be sure of the matter.

Never had to wait more than 10 mins for security and customs as an international was super fast. I think Boston is probably one of the better airports in the US.
Anything in Canada is an embarrassment to civilized flying. It’s convinced me Canada would be a third world country if 90 percent of it and its economy didn’t depend on the US like a parasitical relationship. Not one time have I met a Canadian at an airport that was worthy of the air we breathe.
Charlotte is the US’s worst airport and it is 2.5 hours from any viable alternate.

Worst DFW. I hate it because they don’t open the gates until 15 minutes before boarding starts and I once had an 8 hour layover.
Best HNL. Easy in & Easy out. Open to the wonderful breeze and never overcrowded.
I’m the exact opposite. With, ORD you have to go through security again if you switch terminals. And I like ATL’s layout more it’s very efficient and requires less walking.
For me I don’t switch terminals at ORD, so I don’t have that issue. I work for United so I just use one airline at ORD. But honestly I think I’d lean towards Denver or Newark but I didn’t list them because I’ve only gone through Denver twice and Newark once.
Yeah United has their own terminal at ORD (Terminal 1) so if you’re flying United then you can just stay there (which works especially well for interline). But for other airlines you have to switch in-and-out and going through security again is such a pain. While ATL airport terminals are all connected underground so don’t need to go through security again.
One of the important secrets with DFW is to check the security wait times online before you get to the airport. If you aren't checking a bag you can enter the airport anywhere (and if you are flying with American you can check your bag basically anywhere) and the airside train is very good.
Worst is definitely YUL (Montreal, Canada) or Brussels Zaventem. Both are confusingly laid out, incredibly long lines, extremely understaffed, etc.
Best was definitely GVA (Geneva, Switzerland). Super smooth process getting through security, really clean and weirdly peaceful (at least on the day I was there).
Sharm El Sheik this year was rough, generally not very nice& when we went there was no internet so everything was done on paper, as you can imagine how corrupt they are the amount of people that had to pay for “extra weight in suitcase” & “bag doesn’t fit in the gauge” that went straight in all the staff and police back pocket.
Nicest was Copenhagen I think but Phuket isn’t far off.
Best? My home BIL and Kansas City MCA, both take about 30 seconds total to get through TSA and are just super chill. MCA does get prime tho which is cool.
50% of my flights through DEN were delayed like 3 hours, and the other 50% I had such a short layover when I got to the next gate they were calling my boarding group.
Small airport and probably not going to get a lot of attention, but IND is really well designed, easy to get through, good food options, plenty of space, etc.
MCO low on my list simply for all the non-professional travelers/families/little kids clogging TSA line, gate lice’ing, and clogging overheads with Mickey shit. No offense to kids or families, but you asked..,
IND is one of the best, and you won't convince me otherwise. Between amount of direct flights, design being post 9-11, Goldilocks size, time to get through security, and the additional importance on keeping the AOA clear and open due to the major FedEx hub across the ramp. It's rated high nationwide, but I still think it's underrated.
I've had terrible experiences at ORD and LHR - but also had good ones. Surprisingly I've had continually luck at EWR and the few times I've been CLT have been fine with TSA Pre-Check - looked like hell without it though.
That's true, although next time you're there get the shrimp cocktail from from Harry and Izzy's if you aren't from the area.
I'm never doing leftovers there and showing up mostly as boarding starts, so I've never got time for food anyway.
Yeah it's fantastic. I'm assuming it's not available everywhere, but our Kroger and Meijer sell it in bottles (you can also get it shipped). Fun to bring to friend and family get togethers
I love love flying into it but god is it tiny for the amount of traffic it gets, and they’ll never be able to expand it due to the city surrounding it (unless they take the surrounding land and bulldoze all the houses).
The Mexican government dumped billions of pesos into constructing a new airport on Lake Texcoco, only for it to be canceled four years in due to the fact that it was a structural and ecological nightmare. There are 14 billion pesos in interest fees for the failed construction costs that will take decades to pay off - much of the original costs were embezzled or "disappeared".
It was a shitshow of colossal proportions, billed as Mexico's largest ever infrastructure project. Now we're left with MEX for the unforseeable future.
Worst is Newark. No contest. Always doing construction on the runway so the delays are usually 3 hours, if lucky. So many good airports: I am biased and like MSP a lot, my current base.
Besides the obvious pits of despair (SDQ comes to mind), the major US airport that's a complete hole and operational disaster is DFW. Enjoy the low ceilings and terrible food options while you ride out a 4 hour delay and they lose your bag.
PVU and OGD are some new favorites right now. But SNA is my forever favorite. Big enough to get most domestic places but small enough that it’s rarely busy.
Yeah. Forgot they changed the spelling. Arrived at the same time as several heavies from the Gulf, 45 minute wait for a luggage cart, one of our team is from Hong Kong and the customs officials immediately grab her saying "China China" and start trying to tax our 3D-printed plastic parts (luckily I had already gotten the power tools through with my demure abilities). That doesn't even include the ground transportation shitshow.
Oh well, at least it wasn't expensive. At LAX you have a terrible arrival experience and are then forced to fork over 50 bucks just to get home.
I was USAF and the embassy would hire us a handler to get us through security because it was such a pain in the rear. Especially when traveling with sensitive equipment. Only worse experience than Dhaka was Colombo right after the 2019 Easter bombings.
When Trump did the tariff thing I was trying to explain to people that taxing TVs is like the most 3rd world thing to do.
Did you get a chance to go clothes shopping while you were there? That alone made up for the arrival experience.

LAX shouldn’t even be considered part of the developed world. Getting to the airport is a miserable experience and that’s the most pleasant part of the whole trip. Once you’re there you’re sitting through traffic just to get to your terminal. If you’re in the international terminal or simply not in terminal 1? You’re screwed. And God help you if you need to switch terminals after check in. Going through TSA is like being processed through a prison with how irate the staff is. And your plastic water bottle? Chuck it out you peasant! Yeah I know it’s empty, but too bad! It’s contraband. Pay $10 for an aluminum water bottle in the terminal instead. If you’re flying to a smaller city or simply unlucky your domestic flight is going through an international terminal and if it’s one of the remote terminals? Enjoy your bus ride! It only adds an extra hour of waiting in line and crossing the tarmac. If you’re lucky enough to make it to your gate on time and get seated, you get to taxi back across that tarmac for an hour. At this point you have time to realize the $50/ticket you saved at most was not worth the misery of skipping SNA, ONT, or BUR. You might even be thinking you should have just hopped on the Amtrak and flown out of SAN.
I’d chose to go to LAX ten times out of ten over ORD if we’re just talking about the airport operations part. If you include driving into and getting dropped off? Yeah, fuck LAX all the way.
Honestly it's an abusive relationship. I love the cheap fares, frequent schedule, and zero chance of weather delays. I just try and ignore all the times it left me naked and bleeding on the sidewalk.
HAAAAAAATE LAX. As soon as I land there I want to punch every single person in the face. I once waited in a rental car line for 2 hours before giving up and finding a different company.
BUR whenever possible. One of my favorites.
Dishonorable mention to Dallas Love. It would be fine but it's SO overcrowded now. There's never anywhere to sit and always a line for every single bathroom.
I really didn't understand the LAX hate until I connected through it last week via the international terminal to terminal 7. I travel often for work, including developing countries, and LAX hands down had the worst signage and system to get between those terminals. I understand this might be an isolated scenario, but it was mind-boggling how inefficient it was. Even getting to terminal A at Newark is far more straightforward.
Fucken LAX ! Even my then-nine year old begged me not to book flights via LAX ever again.
Lines for literally hours, just to TRANSIT.
Getting yelled and shepherded in lines by the sour staff, waiting for the non existent life-loving Passport control staff, making threats with a hand on your gun - fuck gee wonder why the western world starts to hate you...
And the inevitable missed flights. Thanks cunts. Now I have to wait 18 hours for the next connecting flight.
Not to forget having to re-claim and re -check in luggage - GTFO.
Missoula Montana is the best I’ve ever used. It’s nearly brand new and always a nice experience. I can’t believe I left Missoula. I despise dfw for a myriad of reasons. There are always delays due to weather, the bathrooms are disgusting, and it’s an overall dump. Once I was standing in line at chick fil an and one of the large light fixtures overhead opened up and a ton of dust and ghost turds fell down on me. It’s unfortunate the damn thing didn’t fall on me. I would have made a good check that day.
In the US, both PHL and MIA are places I try to avoid, while RDU (Terminal 2, specifically) and PDX are my current favorites.
Internationally, I like both HKG (love me a good CX lounge!) and ICN, but I abhor CDG. I’m somewhat ambivalent about LHR; it’s fine as an O/D airport, but connections are a pain.
Philly represent! It’s my home airport so there’s a certain charm for me in the dirty restrooms, the claustrophobic terminals, the mediocre food scene, and the constant delays. When we do yet another go-round because of congested traffic on the runway, I know I’m home.
I detest BER. Dark, inefficient, ugly, disgusting smell, unpleasant toilets, no good food or shopping, rubbish lounges, long walks, impractical location, limited flight connections.
I quite like Heathrow T5 and T2. Basically the opposite of BER.
Worst airport: Nanwalek Ak it is 1,800 ft give it take, curved with the village on one end, and a bluff/hill on the other. It is on a spit of land so water in either side. Always a crosswind and usually icy in the winter. I flew it for five years almost every day multiple trips per day.
Favorite Airport: Nanwalek Ak, challenging and a sense of accomplishment when conditions are less than optimal, which is often. The villagers are incredibly nice and appreciate the pilots.

Favorite: Home town airport of Milwaukee, with their "Recombobulation Area" and "Welcome to Cleveland" signs. They also have an outline of a curling stone in the terrazzo floor in the Southwest Terminal, as a curler, I appreciate that.
Strangest: Topeka, in a small single engine plane prop plane. It was a commercial flight on a rinky dink small airline, I got to sit in the co-pilot seat ("don't touch anything!"). Apparently Topeka used to be a B-52 base, it looked like we could have landed crosswise on the runway
Worst: I don't like to dis Iceland because it is a amazing country, but the Keflavik Airport really needs to improve their wayfinding signage as you arrive.
Most fun flight: Back in the 1970's in high school, I lived in the Bay Area and had a girlfriend in Visalia. There was an Essential Air Service flight on United using a 737 (-100? -200? I don't know). The flight went from San Francisco to Stockton to Modesto to Merced to Visalia. 9 minute flight from Modesto to Merced, they don't even do the oxygen mask demonstration because they don't go high enough. As a transportation geek, I was in high heaven, and I got to see my girlfriend at the same time.
MTY in Monterrey Mexico. Zero signage for departing flights. If you miss the gate number announced on the arriving flight, you need to ask around.
The layout is chaotic, minimal seating areas, and many of the lines lack skybridges. On my Viva flight, everybody queued up in the boarding lines an hour before the flight. Then it was late, but there was no knowing this because it was not announced or indicated anywhere.
I had some good tacos there at a reasonable price though. So at least there's that.
How is this not #1??
Worst airport as far as security, check in, transportation, lounges, boarding, customs, and access to late night food options go by a million miles.
Terminal 2F was hot as balls with all the glass, and another one I was in had hardly any toilets so there was always a line and hardly anywhere to eat. Starbucks was seriously the best option, unbelievable for Paris.
The funny thing is that Ryanair flights are cheap, but after you land, not only do you have to pay extra for transport, you also end up wasting time getting to Paris.
I remember when I went to the toilet there... If I had a choice, I would have preferred to go outside. Terrible!
Worst LAX. And then of course around the world there are the small airports in less developed countries and ofc those are similar and rough like Kathmandu, Bali, ndjili, etc.
Best are any of the new airports in Asia. HKG,sin, etc
Best is by far Jackson Hole Wyoming, so calm and quaint
Worst is Leonardo DaVinci airport in Rome, the man himself would have designed a far more functional airport
Best: Indianapolis. Clean, never any lines at TSA, nothing but positive experiences. Little far away depending on what side of the city you live on. Sacramento has come a long way too.
Worst: Reno. Smells like old cigarettes and you have all the obnoxious slot machines everywhere you turn around.
Paris CDG, long taxi to/from the terminal and changing terminals if your changing planes is a real pain.
AMS also has long taxi times from memory but much nicer terminals than CDG.
Least favorite probably Houston, maybe Oakland after that. Also Madison WI because every goddamn time I go through there I get delayed.
Favorites include a lot of lesser-used, super-regionals like Eugene, Sacramento, Ontario CA, but for the bigger ones I like PHX, Denver, PDX, Minneapolis, and a few others.
Worst: O’Hare. It’s worse than an overcrowded colony of pissed off dyslexic ants.
Best: St. Barth’s. Hands down. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, beats that approach!
GA pilot here. UAO. If you’ve flown in there and caught the tower on a bad day, you know.
I love my home airport, but the controllers and FBO at MFR are always so easy to work with! I make a point to stop there on long cross countries.
Also had a fantastic experience at YYJ. It
Was my first international trip GA and everyone was again so easy to work with.
Genuinely hate Keflavik. Small airport, all the airlines that fly out of there have long layovers, everything in the terminal is overpriced.
Im flying out to France next summer and I spent a extra $700 to not fly on icelandair and fly direct. Just to avoid this airport.
For me as a traveler, Minneapolis. A total clusterf\*\*\* after they did all the post9/11 changes. Was a great idea at first, that you could walk in the door and almost directly to your gate. But the initial 9/11 security required you to go through security just to use the bathroom. They may have changed it since I was there in the 2000's. But man, it really sucked back then.
Until they rebuilt it MCI was always my answer as well. A friend in the industry explained that pre 9/11 that airport was literally the best, but added security ruined it.
It’s a smaller airport but my answer now is EYW, way too small for the amount of traffic it gets. My favorite is probably DEN
Growing up in KC I have so many great memories of old MCI. My dad traveled a considerable amount for work and I would always beg my mom to leave hours early to pick him up so we could get to the airport and I could watch planes come in and out.
The old MCI was such a great design, but the same design that made it great also killed it post 9/11. There was simply no way to build a single security checkpoint in the terminals. The result was the terminals being divided in half lengthwise down the concourse. The problem with that was it placed items like food and restaurants outside of TSA.
I have since moved away from KC but traveled back maybe a year ago. The new design is amazing. Maybe one of the best midsized airports I have flown in and out of. The only issue I have is the crazy rental car situation. I believe light rail is in the works to get from the terminals to the rental car facility, they need to get that in sooner rather than later.
I haven’t been to MCI since they redid it, but having practically nothing between TSA and the gate but a cramped waiting area really was not the brightest.
I can't stand Charlotte, I don't think they ever intended it to be a connecting hub. The new MSY is my favorite airport, and I've been to atleast half of our nations commercial airports.
Don't forget that your plane already landed on a runway that's across town and required a 20 minute taxi to your gate, and the gate wasn't ready when I got there lol
Worst: FRA. Check in one place, proceed to departure gate Zed only to board a bus to stand in line to board a hot plane.
Best: Kalispell, newly renovated, fits right into its location, could double as a mountain lodge with very fancy ‘cars.’
I haven't had any notably bad experiences (airports are awesome; they have airplanes there!) but YYZ can get fucked with a sideways cactus. Thankfully with the proliferation of long-range narrowbodies it's getting easier to get from western Canada to the Caribbean without stopping there. Also not a tremendous fan of NRT only because the post-security food choices are extremely limited for an alpha city world port; I'm assuming since they're used to Asian airlines that actually care for their pax.
Favourites? I enjoyed connecting through ATL and the giant viewing window at SEA is awesome.
St Louis. How the fuck are there 25 seats at each terminal. I’ve never seen so many people sitting/sleeping on the floor waiting for a normal on time flight.
I'm not a pilot but my worst airport experience from a traveller perspective is Ho Ch Minh. Massive crowds, extreme heat, barely any AC. There was an elderly woman that I worried wasn't going to survive the experience.
My favorite one is Singapore Changi, nothing to complain about that airport. And the worst has to be either Miami or Luang Prabang, nothing to do or to get in this last one
Stockholm Skavsta Airport, absolutely terrible. LHR is bad too. Male is just....chaos and bus boarding several huge planes is not great, but they recently expanded so we'll see if that got better. And fuck JFK, like 60 seats in the gate area for a flight with 500 passengers, and not even enough space for people standing in line, also because right across there's another plane with 350 people boarding?
Favorite...hm. Makes me realize I like flying but not necessarily airports, pretty much all of them have some annoying part to it. But I'd say Vienna isn't exciting or beautiful but everything works very well.
MNL by far. A true sh*thole of an airport. It's now under new management and to be fair they're spending a lot to improve the place but I'm afraid they're just polishing a turd.
FLL. They know their passenger flows are largely dependent on cruise ship schedules yet there’s never enough seating, not enough restaurants/bars, etc, etc.
BOS is my home and I only hate it when the weather is bad.
CLT is the worst (but maybe will get better after the renovation is complete).
TPA is my favorite airport, with DTW a close second.
Not the op but from my experience 10 years ago all the departure flights were stacked up at the same time and the terminal was packed shoulder to shoulder with people waiting to board.
I flew through KEF ten years ago before the expansions then again in September and the international departures situation was the still the same lol. Crammed in line alongside two other lines of people further back from their gate than I was.
We also had a short layover which was fine considering there was minimal seating in that terminal.
I was last there almost 10 years ago, but back then, it felt utterly ill equipped to handle the amount of people who were there. Like the planners had only taken Iceland’s own population into account and not the hordes of tourists that all fly into Keflavik.
That was my initial observation in 2015 and again in 2025. Both times people were lined up for the wrong gate because they were so far back they couldn't even see the board lol.
Most recent worst that comes to mind is LAS. Its old, cramped, the ground transportation is terrible. The worst is getting stuck there after a long couple days in Vegas, hungover, and still having to see slot machines. Not that I have personal experience /w this.
Living in Louisville I have the pleasure of connecting to a major hub on pretty much every trip. Also usually get to make a terminal change - arriving into a hub on a regional jet the going out on something larger. With that in mind:
Delta - I will take a ATL connection most of the time - its a well thought out airport and easy to make connections in
United - I try to avoid ORD - its a 50min flight from Louisville and I swear there have been times I have taxied around that place longer than I was in the air.
American - I dislike CLT. Always delays and making connections in that airport is terrible. Also not a huge fan of MIA. That leaves DFW which if I am headed West is maybe my best option.
Southwest - Generally get to head to MDW first, which isn't horrible I enjoy the opportunity to get an Italian beef.
MNL is so awful. I remember flying there as a kid in the early 90s and it was terrible. Then went 2 years ago and it’s still just as bad! Arrivals, departures, everything.
Depends on the terminal, T1 I dread but thankfully haven't been in or out from there since 2013.
T3 is ok, only been in and out of there since 2015 and it's like many Western airports.
T2 I've only been there once and can't remember any problems
Manchester Airport EGCC is a mess. Just a hodgepodge of terminals and buildings thrown up together. Definitely showing it's age. Security was an absolute joke after COVID opened back up.
St Louis KSTL is a bit of a joke right now too, you cannot stay airside to go between A B and C gates or switch between terminals 1 or 2 but at least there are plans to modernize. St Louis seems to essentially be a regional airport with 4 runways. The loss of TWA hurt it and it is still recovering from.
Of all airports I have been too, I like Schiphol, I'll connect through Amsterdam before I go through Heathrow any day of the week.
Montevideo MVD was small, compact but efficient for a nations capital.
Keflavik too. Small & compact but very efficient at transferring IcelandAir transiting passengers off inbound US flights onto departing European flights early in the mornings
CDG is the worst.
Confusing signage that conflicts with other signage. Ask police officer what direction to go in French and English and he just looks right through me like I don’t exist. Ask again and he turns and walks away.
Screening staff had a complete meltdown in front of me and tried to accuse another passenger of pushing them. Which I witnessed did not happen but they yelled and screamed about it for 2 minutes like a baby. Then continued to yell across the security area for as long as I was there.
Exit immigration officer also had a meltdown because my wife did not hand him her passport fast enough. Went on a long rant in French which she does not understand and that is why she did not hand him the passport as she did not know what he wanted. I just ignored the man baby until he ran out of air.
Fast track security for business class was just a confusing mess with lines that did not make sense and chaos would be the easiest way to describe it. I don’t really care if I use the fast track but they insisted I had to.
The lounge was consistent with my other experiences.
I did enjoy the awards for best airport banners I saw in the terminal.
Favourites would be Narita, SIN, and YVR
Haven’t flown to many intl’s, so for US domestic:
Worst: EWR. Just a headache in every way.
Best: (Hot take) MCO! I know it’s not loved by most, but I find it easy to navigate and overall pleasant. Just don’t wait by the gates, I agree it can be chaos there.
I dont get the EWR hate. I havent flown into it a ton, usually use LGA, but on a recent trip I gave it a shot.
Everything was on time, in fact when we were headed home the captain came off the plane into the terminal and said if we can board quickly he had a window and could get us out early. Never had that happen at LGA.
If you are traveling to midtown its difficult to beat NJTransit to Penn. I would do that all day over the cluster that is the LGA bus to the subway station in Queens.
I flew into Newark once with a connecting flight to Allentown. Looked all over on the boards trying to find the flight, finally went to a customer service desk. It wasn't a flight. It was a bus. You just went down some narrow stairs between two gates and got on a little airport shuttle bus and rode all the way to Allentown.
Worst would be Vienna. Booked last minute flights from Croatia to Berlin with a stopover in Vienna, arriving at 11pm, flying out at 6am. It became immediately clear that they made it hostile for anyone to attempt to stay over... not a single charging plug to be found, and not a single place that you could lie down, with little barricades on every stretch of seats more than 1.5m long. No food available, shifty amenities, just a generally shit experience all round.
Best by far is Changi, Singapore. Ample spots to charge phones, lie down, relax, or go see a movie, or play in a games room with many assorted consoles and games available. Showers, clean toilets, just a masterclass in how to provide a top notch airport facility.
I really think they made it bad on purpose just to set expectations that you are now on Island Time. The arrival into that airport is so beautiful - over the water with hills on either side. Then you get to the terminal and like you said its just....well yeah.
My largest issue is the terminal is entirely too small and its serviced by larger 757 and 737 Aircraft. Delta American and United have flights that leave about the same time in the afternoon and everyone tries to get to the airport 2 hours early b/c you never know how TSA / Border Patrol will be. There just isnt enough room for that many people in the already cramped and outdated terminal.
But hey the islands are beautiful, a small price to pay I guess.
Abuja and Dakar were pretty awful, think rats and power outages every few minutes. I think both have since opened new terminals.
In the US, where to start? LGA and EWR are both horrible (although haven't been to LGA since the new terminals opened). EWR literally reeked of piss and my taxi ride into Manhattan was singularly the most disgusting vehicle I've ever been in, and I say this as someone who spends a lot of time in developing countries.
IAD used to be my home airport and I hate it, somehow C/D seems a fitting hub for the capital of the US - decayed, poorly designed, and just kind of miserable to be in. Just tear it down already.
So, CLT is my home airport and I’ve grown to appreciate its eccentricities, but I fly weekly and can go through it with my eyes closed. I get why everyone else hates it.
DEN is almost the worst because there just aren’t any signs directing you where to go. It’s the only airport you find yourself in a herd of strangers wandering aimlessly trying to find the ticket counter. Most airports have a logic to it to a certain extent. Not DEN.
MIA is the worst as others have stated. Understaffed and the employees are awful. I hate the whole city, so that might be part of it.
I love the small regionals like Shreveport (where I am now actually) or Chattanooga or Bakersfield. Where there’s only 6 gates and 2 baggage carousels. Feels like my own private airport.
Best: TPA - From curb to gate in less than 10 minutes. And the Colombia Resteraunt…
Worst: ATL can be frustrating primarily from a customer service perspective. Seems the vast majority of airport staff, retail staff, Resteraunt staff have much less patience for travelers. Sometimes warranted…
I love EWR Terminal C as a frequent flier. Security is fast, lots of food choices (expensive, but the company paid), good lounges.
Changing flights in CDG is the worst (only did that once). LHR is just long, long distances to walk, similar to FRA when you are at the very end of the A gates.
ZRH has got to be my favorite because of how tiny yet modern and well structured it is. And the worst has gotta be my home country's BBO (smaller airport in Bucharest, was used for domestic flights or short hop flights to European destinations a decade ago). Fun fact: it's one of the oldest airports in the world.
This thread has reminded me about how much I hate flying now, period. Gratified to see that my pet peeves CDG and YUL are high on the shit list though. The best airport is the one you avoid IMO.
I haven't flown nearly as much as some of you all, but here goes.
Worst: KEF for overcrowded departure terminals, long baggage check lines, and not being able to buy food upon arrival. The SAGA lounge is pretty good, though.
Best: LEB has free parking, a nice brew pub, fun airplanes and saves me a drive to BOS.
Worst: BER
Best: Probably HND and MUC
Though my favourite airport has to be WAW. In 2022 I flew a lot out of there and liked it very much. Very flawless airport experience all the time.
why is BER the worst? sure we know the history and security sometimes seems to take long, but in general I don't find it that bad (of cause not good, but also not worst)
It’s extremely badly designed, steps up steps down for no reason (except bad design); signs very hard to read; station put in a random spot with no intelligent directions to it shown; same goes for parking lots and taxi stands, all very hard to find. All this when Tegel was -if small- the best airport ever designed.
Yes, that's basically it, I agree with what Frequent Chain already said. To add a few points: The infrastructure around the airport is just horrible. Yeah, there is the regional train FEX and the S-Bahn but the FEX is very, very unreliable. It should be better with the newly opened railroad track, however expect it to be cancelled or delayed by a long shot because it's not driving but just standing around in the middle of nowhere frequently. So when you're trapped in it, you can't really use the S-Bahn. The A100 is also not an option with an Uber/Taxi because it's crowded every single time if you're not trying to get there in the early morning. Had to hurry quite a few times although I left early.
It's also the only airport where I had consistent delays. Can't remember all the reasons honestly. But there was always something. Stuff like this for example: My aircraft had to be repositioned to a remote parking stand because of an incoming aircraft due to a slot when next to our flight there were literally 5 to 7 parking spots available for the landing aircraft to park. It's just always a pain.
One additional thing that is highly annoying: the distances you have to walk. Arriving in T2 or having a gate somewhere at the far end of A38 or B45 with an always defective moving walkway is just not convenient. It's not like the airport is very big but you'll walk quite a lot if your gate is located at the end of the world. Might be true for other airports as well but to be honest, I walked the most distances at BER, for sure.
Also the staff compared to other airports I’ve flown out of seems to be quite unprofessional and sometimes even overwhelmed when handling slight irregularities. Handing over information to passengers because of the (delayed) status of your flight or stuff like overbooking seems to always be an issue.
And lastly, the lack of meaningful flights. Especially long haul. For a capital city it has a laughable network and I imagine that the airport is struggling with it, however I can't see them improving on that. And in my opinion the history of Germany made it especially hard for the airport, however seeing anyone argue that Lufthansa is the sole reason for it ... nah, the airport and the lack of attractiveness has to play a huge role when it comes to this.
That's what I meant. In 2022 I had around 100 flights out of WAW and I had only one delay of one hour due to a deicing queue, any other flight was on time or had a delay of maximum 20 minutes. It was great, it just worked. At BER I had around 30 flights and I kid you not, probably 15 of them had some kind of delay, irregularity or stuff like waiting for an hour for your baggage to arrive.
For me, it was just always an unpleasant airport to fly out of.
Rangoon (Yangon) in Burma / Myanmar about 35 years ago.
Like stepping back in time 50 years. Without doubt the dodgiest place and the dirtiest airport toilet Ive ever had the displeasure of using.
1st world? LAX by the length of the straight.
When I went is when you could only go with an approved 1 week or 2 week tour. It was a remarkable experience. I think there was maybe 6 or 8 in our group and there was hardly any other tourists at all.
Worst would be Adelaide. Because when you get off the plane, you're in Adelaide.
Flying into Sydney is always nice. Especially if you come in from the north over the harbour.
US:
TPA is the best in my opinion.
KATL is hit or miss. I absolutely hate it when I have to walk 3 miles from my gate to baggage like I’ve had to do a few times but other than that it’s cool.
Overseas:
Schiphol was pleasant and the views were beautiful flying out. Staff was really friendly too.
Doha sucked because they do not tell you which gate your going to board at until it’s closer to boarding time so if you have a long layover you’re aimlessly walking around or sitting around for hours in that tiny airport while having anxiety on where you’re supposed to be. Then it’s a 50/50 chance they’ll change your gate and make you migrate to the new one again.
Worst, Lubumbashi (FBM). Fresh meat for immigration and customs to test your metal when they try to threaten you during the shake down.
Favourite airport, Cape Town (CPT). Nice to have a beer looking at the airside in departures. Easy to navigate in and out.
LAX by a country mile!
If you fly Spirit into or out of LAX, your life is a roller coaster. Made the mistake of doing that this last weekend, and life was miserable.
.
- You check bags at T1
- Ticket says the flight goes from T2
- However, the reality is you oughta haul halfway across the terminals to get to Terminal B, which is where Spirit flies out of
- Ah finally I'm at Terminal B, clear security
- Happy I have an hour left, I go to grab food and spend 20 minutes
- When I look at my gate number, I think meh, probably around the corner, as the gate numbers are shown in front of you
- Finish food and start walking
- 3 elevators, 1 long ass tunnel, 20 minute walk, running at some point realizing doors close soon
- All with a stroller, three backpacks, baby, baby pillow, food bag, tired jetlagged ass, with no sleep
- Barely make it to gate with 5 mins left
- Happy to have priority boarding so somehow get in
.
.
.
FLY SPIRIT NEXT 5 HOURS.....FFS MF!
LAX you suck!
Newark is kinda shitty but the worst for me was probably LAX. Changing terminals from international to domestic is like a 45min walk outside, the TSA lines are giant and half the people there have that pulled back lizard face.
Pain in the ass to have a layover there after a 12 hour flight
Leeds Bradford UK, barely a window anywhere and without wishing to sound like a snob it’s full of drunk stag and hen parties. Short runway and windy so takeoff and landing are usually quite fun but the airport itself I hate
Worst ones... Here's my shitlist. Major American airports are known to be chaotic, but generally if shit hits the fan at least you know you'll be taken care of, and you can talk to them.
SFO is pretty bad because it's chaotic and not friendly to wide bodies.
JFK is just... JFK. Do as you're told and generally you'll be taken care of.
Then going overseas...
CGK - they couldn't figure it out for 2 runways. They now have 3.
MNL - expect a few STAR changes, frequent laser events, super saturated single runway operation, huge mountains next to the airport.
PVG/PEK. runway change hell.
Then there is India...
Favourites?
Osaka KIX is good... Until they redid the stars and sids for the expo.
LHR is among my favourites. Absolutely demonstrates what a busy, congested airport can and should look like. It's order in chaos rather than organized chaos like so many other busy airports are. It's stressful enough going there to keep you on your toes, but the controllers are all so calm and professional.
HKG is/was good. Post COVID 3 runways has a few problems for sure.
Melbourne (MEL) is not good. On arrival you’re crowded into a tiny customs area. Then you get outside and it’s just ugly. On departure-the traffic!!!! It’s really not a great introduction to Australia.
My worst was also my favourite.
ENJA
Rough rough runway, but only C130's are allowed to land there. Had to do 2 low passes under cloud cover just to attempt to land.
TGD (Podgorica)
My local airport, holy fuck it's awful.
Super small, super overpriced shops that sell almost nothing because they can't physically fit more shelves, the border control looks like a thin sheet wood tunnel, there is usually a single check in working for multiple flights, it looks like it's about to fall apart and hasn't been updated or renovated since the day it was built. The worst part? 20 dodgy taxi dudes staying in the terminal until 23:00 to catch some poor bastard and overcharge them.
Luanda is the worst. Although it's just been replaced I believe so that'll probably change to Cairo.
Singapore is the best by a mile.
Amsterdam is good.
Worst in Europe is definitely CDG
Too many choices to pick the worst in the USA. I do like ATL though.
Best and worst simultaneously is **Lukla** in the foothills of the Himalayas. _Best_ as it has some of the most iconic views anywhere on the planet. _Worst_ as its scrotum-tightening (if you have one) on the inbound, landing on a short uphill strip with a blank wall at the end, plus occasionally bits of planes lying around that didn’t quite get it right; and jaw-dropping on the way out because basically you drop off the end of a cliff. It’s worth it though.
My worst in the traditional sense is Nairobi, landed in there just as the ground staff went on strike and was basically imprisoned in a transit lounge, followed by a riot trying to locate baggage and deal with W-jumping Austrians.
The best is Schiphol, so calm and serene.
Worst: FIH. I’ve never been hotter or more frustrated in my entire life. And way worse than any of the smaller airports in Congo I’ve flown into/out of. Honorable mention to CDG for Europe.
Best: I love both transiting and departing/arriving in SIN, so easy. Honorable mention to ADD for being nowhere near the world’s major hubs in terms of form but has consistently nailed it in terms of function imho.
CAN (Guangzhou) is such an easy airport to navigate in, both the domestic and international terminals.
LHR is terrible. Such an odd mix of underfunded and overly complex design. I know it's largely due to size issues and each terminal feeling as if they are randomly spawned without much thought, but even things like getting luggage or doc checks are awful. Odd place.
I haven't flown into many, but Waco has such a tiny airport for a city is size it was laughable. GFK and FAR have much nicer terminals and are way smaller towns.
San Diego was pretty and the weather was a so nice.
My wife said SeaTac smelled like sewage when she flew through so that was hers.
She lived flying into Lahaina, but I'm not sure if it survived the fires.
In the US, MIA was the worst (2024): long lines, aggressive and suspicious border control agents. Sniffer dogs in the security line. Industrial vibe gates.
Best so far was SYR (3 times in last 5 years). So chill, bright and clean, with a bonus Boeing 727 cockpit in the main lobby
Well, I hadn't flown out of many, but, if I were to say...
Probably a competition between Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Schiphol in Amsterdam.
Granted, I flew multiple times out of CDG when I lived in Paris. Every non-Schengen flight was from a very small and crowded terminal section, without that many shops, even water being scarce. When I flew to Schengen for my connecting flights, there was this huge area, which even had PS4 game consoles for Demo. But the prices of food and beverage were so damn high.
As for Schiphol, I have been there only once, on a connecting flight. Not only it was a maze to navigate through, but the worst part was the transition between Schengen and non Schengen. Because there was no transition. You would go from one building to the same building. Like you pass through the border gates, take a left turn, and then another one and you are back where you started. The worst part was that the number of border gates was very low compared to the influx of passengers. It took me one hour of waiting in queue to pass through
Late to the party, but (London) Heathrow. It’s not even a competition for me: I loathe that place and everything about it. We will do everything we can to avoid it.
CYTZ.
Sure it’s got great views but man the controllers are always in a mood cause they’re so overworked, there’s always that one pilot who busts their bravo, they’ve got the Porter guys coming in on IFR, a flight school doing circuits and so many more. The cherry on top is that the airport has terrible management that hates GA with a passion and a city that’s actively lobbying to put more restrictions in place.
Hate: CDG, LAX (love/hate since it’s home)
Love: BUR - the best airport in the world. Just be careful that you don’t get run over by your uber as you step off the plane… distances are extremely short. Also like TUS, SJC, DTW, and AMS
Juba South Sudan in 2017. There was no terminal, just army tents with no cooling at 34 celcius. Also, every person working there wanted to earn some extra money.
It has improved a lot with the real terminal.
Out of major cities of the world, Mexico City’s airport is atrocious.
It’s old and crumbling. Nowhere to sit, overcrowded, and the bathrooms are some of the worst airport bathrooms in the world. They are tiny, crowded, and have basically no ventilation.
I flew through CDG once. All I remember is the giant all-glass ceiling letting the sun cook me like it was a greenhouse. Also, TIL that ceiling collapsed shortly after I went through there and killed 4 people. Fuck that roof.
Worst? DLA. Worst as an adult? Probably TKK, but at least it gets so little traffic that delays aren’t an issue.
Best is ZRH. The airport itself functions so smoothly and it integrates perfectly with public transit.
Flew through SIN recently. Nice airport but not as impressive as I’d been lead to believe. Honorable mention for best is NPE because there’s no security! You just walk into the airport, check a bag if needed and then get on the plane! It’s as convenient as a bus. Granted, destinations from there are rather limited.
I puke whenever I land at NRT unless I can sit towards the front of the plane. The crosswinds inherent to those runways really do a number on me. (They were allegedly prevented from building a crosswind runway a la HND due to decades of opposition etc)
It's not a favorite anymore, as local mood has completely shifted, but HKG is nice.
Worst: Newark and Manila. Newark has a very weird layout and going through security is tedious. I find security in most US airports tedious but Newark is a whole different level. The amenities is mid it at most. And Manila is just T1, other terminals are ok. I don’t like it because it’s operating beyond its capacity and is really cramped. I also dislike the additional security at the gate.
Favorite: Amsterdam Schiphol. It has this retro vibe to it that I like plus I always arrive for my flight early just to chill on the rooftop observation deck. I also like how the train station is right below it so commuting is extremely easy.
Didn't have any particularly bad experiences at any. Favorite was Harstad, Norway, a nice small comfy airport, lady that reads the information over the speakers made a mistake and started laughing her ass off on the PA.
Moroni (HAH) is probably the worst, at internationally, domestically was fine. They had two large planes leaving at the same time and the airport was not equipped to handle that. The immigration officer went on lunch with a queue of about 300 people left to process.
No air conditioning, but thankfully I was in business class so I got to spend 5 minutes in the lounge with its portable air conditioning, but even then they made me sit down and stay in my seat and brought food to me.
Still it was a very amusing day.
My most recent experiences were my one-way flight from Brazil to Japan. JFK was quick and decent, unlike most of the stories I've heard online. Arrival at HND was a mess and so unlike what I expected of Japan.
My favourites to depart and arrive are basically all airports in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, since I lived in both cities and like looking at them from above. Departure and arrival there were mostly painless, IIRC.
Worst in recent times was CFU (Corfu).
It was absolute chaos with a dozen or so flights to the UK all leaving within an hour or two of one another. There was no organised questions system, so the queue to get into the non-shenghen gates looped around the rest of the terminal two or three times, with some people just jumping the queue anyway.
Worst? There are so many but I think KUF (deep in Russia, serves the cities of Samara and Togliatti / Tolyatti) takes the cake. I've flown in and out of it twice ...
Best? Probably SIN (Changi) though ICN is pretty nice too.
