Never seen one, but I come from a family where traditional Christmas puddings and cakes were always homemade (and delicious, unlike some versions), and panettone was our other choice. I don't think we ever had room for another option. Plus my mum can't eat chocolate, none of us ate madeira cake if there was anything else on offer, and only a couple of us liked marzipan. So it'd have been a bit pointless.

I had to laugh at someone born in 73 describing themselves as old 😂 Tunis cake was lush, didn't know it had made a comeback. I think I'll stick with my memories though, usually the best way when old things make a comeback.

I heard about Tunis cakes for the first time on local radio this morning. Tescos seems behind the hype. Don't remember them from the late 70s/80s at all. Maybe it was a regional thing? Weird how slapping the word 'retro' on something makes it catnip to people.

I'm 49 and had Tunis cake quite a lot when growing up. My nan worked in bakery and these were made and sold, and any left at the end of the day would go home with her. I've occasionally made them at Christmas.

I remember Tunis cakes, that thick chocolate icing on top. Flipping delicious it was. We used to dunk the cake in coffee, and eat the icing separately. I remember some brands had a shiny paper holly sprig on top to make it look festive. The mini ones were rubbish in comparison to the normal sized ones.

In my fifties and don’t recall these at all. However looking at them I do remember my mum and gran making a one layer sponge and putting a fairly thick layer of chocolate on top. Maybe they were making a cheap version of this? Tbh we rarely had bought in cakes as we grew up with gran baking and mum and we baked from little. Tbh I have fond memories of having my four kids stood around the table each with a mixing bowl doing a mass baking session as well lol. I used to make the one layer sponge with chocolate on top, often as a tray bake or the same cake with icing.

I am also a similar age. I remember them very well. Had a Saturday job in the local grocery/baker shop from age 13 and they used to stock them at Christmas. I did notice the retro Tunis cake in a shop the other day. I've never actually tasted one though!
