Guess it's welcome news because all I had seen were the German test on the GT3RS and it outclassed the Cup2R easily in terms of lap time AND longevity.
I am on a GT3 (non RS) and have flip flopped between Cup 2 and the Pirelli PZero Corsa 4 which was ok. It lasted a while but had better everyday compliance. (It doesn't rain here much, but when it does, I drive another car in the wet due to others' inexperience in such driving conditions)
With a fresh set of Cups on track at *night* time, they were inflated properly and shredded so badly I had chunks of tire in the wheel well and inner rim for a while which made a racket driving home. All the 3RS guys have raved about the Trofeo but the sizes were simply not available.
As others have mentioned cost is going to be eye watering. From Michelin, (8000 here in our currency vs 13,000 of the PZC4s), I can only imagine what the Trofeo RS will cost.
It actually all comes down to how you use this particular car. If it’s daily driven, then longevity, noise, and comfort matter, you want low wear, quiet braking, and smooth modulation in traffic. If it’s a weekend toy or track gear, you optimize for heat and consistency, noise and wear are just the price of performance... Same setup can feel perfect or completely off depending on that choice!
I am not super informed on tire levels, but how would a Zero Trofeo RS compare to something like an RE-71RS, or even a Pilot Sport 4s?
Is it worlds apart from your usual 200 Treadwear tire?
Yep not daily drivers, they can get you to and from a track. next level, in line with a 4S is the PZero R, which is as far as I understood the new PZero Corsa, so track capable, but also excellent in the rain.
you would not want to run these for daily use. They take some time to warm up, and before that you have very little grip. Nor do you want to run these in any kind of weather conditions unless you are a super experienced driver (again due to grip).
And then on top of that they wear extremely quickly.
So is the Trofeo RS the new king of track option tire? I know there are more superb ones, but the go to tire for **manufacturers** since like 2018 is the Cup 2R.
> I know there **are more superb ones**,
Mind sharing an example?
>but the **go to tire for manufacturers** since like 2018 is the **Cup 2R**.
Porsche has been in love with Pilot Sport Cup 2s for ages…
Watch track day videos on youtube. They have tires more track focused with a bit of longevity. Stuff from nankang and hankook. Dont know off the top of my head but they're track only tires. Nothing stopping people from using them on the street tho.
> Watch track day videos on youtube. They have **tires more track focused with a bit of longevity**.
Cup 2s are perfectly usable on the street and still deliver strong performance on track. Slicks and proper semi-slicks, on the other hand, are noisy, unsafe in the wet, and have very short life spans. So the question is really: What’s the closest thing to Cup 2s that you can both daily and take racing?
Pirelli PZero R, hands down. Cup 2 grip and Pilot 4s wet performance. It's the tire of choice for all the new Super cars that aren't pure track beasts.
Bstone RE71
Yok A052
Vitour X01 and R01
Hoosier TA Pro
GY SC3R
All faster, and last longer, and for the first 3 actually really good in the wet.
The 2R can hang/slightly quicker (other than the SC3R) but is horrible in the wet. May as well go right to a Hoosier A7/8 at that point.

I have used Yokohama Advan A048 and A052 a lot, and I would politely disagree regarding both their longevity and their performance in wet conditions. Bridgestone RE 71RS is a valid alternative to Cup 2 indeed. I somehow forgot about it, maybe because I could never find it in the sizes I needed without paying an arm and a leg.
> What’s the closest thing to Cup 2s that you can both daily and take racing?
There are tons of tires that fit this bill, usually better than Cup 2s. ExtremeContact Force is basically just as fast but wears significantly longer; Supercar 3 is similar to Cup 2, but basically better in every way; Potenza Race is faster than Cup 2 and better in the wet, but doesn’t wear as long; V730 is faster and wears longer, but isn’t as good in the rain; and RT660+ is basically better in every way.
I truly don’t know anyone that buys Cup 2s for the track, especially for what Michelin charges.
\> What’s the closest thing to Cup 2s that you can both daily and take racing?
Personally prefer the Supercar3, the non-R, its not quite as sticky but it has fine endurance & feels a bit more consistent
I mean the Cup 2's are still good but its been a few years, you have decent 200tw options from all the manufacturers now
>Porsche has been in love with Pilot Sport Cup 2s for ages…
Same with other exotic automakers. Also still don't hear they using other tyre makers beside Pirelli, Michelin, GoodYear, Bridgestone, and Dunlop.
There is a reason Porsche, Ford, Lambo, Ferrari and many others are all moving away from Cup 2s and 2Rs, despite years of using these tires on their performance models...
They just aren't the best performer of the top tier brands. Pirelli's Trofeo RS is next level.
> the go to tire for manufacturers since like 2018 is the Cup 2R.
This is definitely not the go to tire for people who take their cars to the track. It’s a good tire, but not the go to.
I say that because I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the “go to tire for manufacturers” is for marketing purposes, either because the said tire company is providing a discount better than anyone else can offer, the tire company is paying them to use and promote the tires, or some combination of the two.
All this being said, I personally believe we currently live in a golden age of tires. They’re all very, very good.
I didnt say this was the tire for a track day enthusiast. Cup2R is the hero lap tire. Performance falls off pretty quick after the 2nd lap.
As far as marketing goes, if you're aware of what these tires do you'd be aware all of the lap records have been done on cup2 R since 2018. Porsche, Mercedes, Corvette have done their times on that tire. If the Michelin was so cheap the Viper ACR would have been running CUP2 R, but they are on Kumhos. The kumhos on the ACR lap record runs are anywhere from 1.1-1.7 SLOWER than the Cup2R.

Do they set those records as OEM tires? Or did they use non-OEM equipment to set whatever non-OEM record you’re citing? Also, 2018 is a long time ago. Michelin definitely set a standard back then but times have changed. There are better tires out there.
I guess I don’t know the point you’re trying to make using 8 year old citations.

Viper ACR was using Kumho “V720s” that were a completely different compound from every other V720 you could get, and they only made that compound in ACR sizes.
Trofeo RS is a regular production tire available in a multitude of sizes that are common to more than a few cars. You’re not seeing the phrase “cheater tire” because it’s not applicable to the situation at hand.
> Viper ACR was using Kumho “V720s” that were a completely different compound from every other V720 you could get
right , super-soft one you couldn’t make more than maybe 10k miles on
This and the Cup 2R are just one lap wonders. They're great if you want to s et the best time in a time attack event but once they overheat, you lose a lot of grip.
That's why most regular track drivers who do multiple laps and sessions only go up to the regular Cup 2.
