Question, Why doesn't anyone know how to dance anymore?

Ok, so I'm almost 50, and at a party for a 40 year old friend of mine, and literally none of the millenials or gen Z at the party can dance. Like there's a guy in his 20s dancing like a 70 year old I know. Wtf. I feel bad for them.
Trashboat_96@reddit
No one ever fucking taught us thats why. Oh and try being brought up by a jesus freak catholic boomer mother ain't no dancing in that kinda household
PastorParcel@reddit
Dance? Most people under 30 can't even manage a phone conversation! Social interaction is at an all time low, so this doesn't shock me.
roving1@reddit
I despise phone calls. If we can't talk in person, text me, send me an email, or we can arrange a video chat.
PastorParcel@reddit
That's so weird.
roving1@reddit
Nope, 69. Putting the phone on speaker mode helps but I increasingly hate holding a phone to my ear. Lest you think this is old age speaking I have always disliked phone conversations.
PastorParcel@reddit
Fair enough, I'm the opposite. Texting is fine for basic information like an address, but otherwise I'd rather call. Face-to-face is always best though.
Glad you like my creations! šĀ
roving1@reddit
One key is this, texting allows asynchronous communication. My family can text me even though I'm dealing with a crisis. (Hospital chaplain).
PastorParcel@reddit
Fair. Texting is definitely useful, but lacks the nuance, warmth, and humanity of a phone conversation. So, it's fine for exchanging information, bad for creating personal connection. (Pastor).
roving1@reddit
Text and emails are not my first choice for pastoral care. Although I find myself responding texts late at night. Some people dislike phome calls even more than I do. Even so almost all my work is done at the hospitals.

roving1@reddit
Who or what?
ChillmerAmy@reddit
I mean, Iād probably just sit there to avicii too.
Expat111@reddit
Did they stop teaching square dancing in the 7th grade? That could be the answer.
roving1@reddit
I despised that class module.
hapster85@reddit
Anyone can move to music, but as far as actual dance moves, I've tried. I have no rhythm. I can't keep time. On s cruise last summer, for example, I tried taking line dance lessons. Even the simplest of steps led to me getting stepped on. I'm a big guy, so I stopped before I ended up hurting someone.
roving1@reddit
Anyone can move to music,
No, we cannot.
OolongGeer@reddit
Give TikTok or YouTube a watch for about two minutes, and you'll see how your view of this topic might be a bit narrow.
roving1@reddit
I will never understand how or why people enjoy that. But, there's a place for everyone.
Booziesmurf@reddit (OP)
I'm very active on tiktok, I follow a lot of dancers. There is a difference between dance content creators and actual people.
Opus-the-Penguin@reddit
We know how to dance? I thought that was one of the things our generation missed out on. It was all about just going out on the floor and jiggling your body in random ways and "expressing yourself." No one ever taught us any actual moves.
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
roving1@reddit
I've never understood that meme. What is the "Electric Slide?"
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
Google and find out
roving1@reddit
Misses my point. Probably my fault. Also, people actually enjoy doing that???
BmanGorilla@reddit
It's hard to read the phone and dance at the same time.

Cultural_Project9764@reddit
Seriously though. Is it that they canāt dance/ dance badly or they just donāt dance? I donāt consider myself a good dance but hell if I let that stop me from dancing my booty off. I leave parties early if thereās no dancing. Thereās only so much for me to talk about. I donāt like getting drunk. If thereās no dancing then Iām out. Theyāre missing out. As a genx, I never had any interest in dancing. On the few occasions I did, I was compelled to drum and play air guitar. I couldn't understand the dancing portion of it. I always liked the old joke. Hug a musician because they never get to dance.
GTFU-Already@reddit
I play in a band and it makes me sad to play for a room full of people and no one gets up to dance. When I was younger, that's all we did when we went to see a band in a bar. We danced the night away. Now no one does. Or they just stand there and bounce. Usually on the one and the three. A little piece of me dies inside....š

peeehhh@reddit
NotEasilyConfused@reddit
That's a huge part of it.
Come to this sub any day, and you will find at least one group of Gen-X talking about how we are so thankful that all of our awkward teenage decisions, actions, parties, jokes, pictures, etc., etc., were not recorded and would never be posted for the world to see. Pixies and videos we did have were shared worth very close groups of friends as a way to contribute to share the experience. There were a few assholes who would try to embarrass someone and use video/ photo evidence, but the majority of us did asks would defend the victims of that horrible behavior.. We don't want those things shared now unless we are sharing our own for a specific reason.
I do not blame younger people at all about being afraid to recorded. They are not lesser human beings worth fewer feelings, and kids are just as mean to each other as they were when WE were kids. Finding other people's embarrassment humorous is disgusting.
A video camera was pretty obvious in our mix, and terrible quality. Now, very high quality video can be taken in secret. Picture stabilization and low-light technology makes it easy to document every little innocent attempt to learn something new (like dancing ... which takes a ton of practice before you are any good at it! And, even then, the "joke" might be that you were with the wrong partner).
Aside from all of that immediate worry...
They also have a critically important thing that we have never had to worry about ... but we have been warning them about since they were old enough to learn: 1) the things that go onto the internet never come off and 2) if the wrong people saw it, a single video or picture can complicate your chances of getting into the college you want, getting to TA for the professor from whom you would learn the most, and prevent you from being considered for a good internship, and a good job.
A single video of a stupid decision or a brave risk that looks silly (like at a dance) could mess up your best chances at the adult life you want.
That kind of existential threat is real for them. In real time. When we talk about this kind of thing, we need to rember these things. We cannot innocently wonder why things are different.
They should be worried and cautious
We should be feeling SAD and frustrated that this is yet one more thing they need to deal with. It's adding to their anxiety. It adds to their hesitation to try new things. I think it's a disgrace that our generation helped create that ... and now some of us act like is a moral flaw on their part that they are so reserved.
kat2211@reddit
Agreed.
But...as they're also the ones recording everything, my sympathy is limited. This is a problem of their own creation.
sunfish99@reddit
Lest Americans forget, remember how much of a stink certain people tried to make over video of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing on a rooftop in her college days? It was part of a video filmed with other students, that some anonymous poster on Twitter reposted because they thought it should be embarrassing for her as a newly sworn-in Congresswoman.
Cultural_Project9764@reddit
I saw that and thought it was so wholesome and sweet. People are awful
oldridingplum@reddit
It will be very interesting to see what happens to Australian teens in the next decade. Australia has banned social media for all under 16s. If they can meaningfully enforce it, weāll probably see a nation of teens with improved mental health.
railworx@reddit
Yes, like smoking was banned for under 18's (in the US)? And nobody under 18 ever smoked again? š¤£
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit
Laws don't eliminate behavior but they can drastically reduce it. People still drive drunk but nowhere near what they used to.
Obwyn@reddit
No one ever said it would stop all underage smoking.
It significantly lowered smoking rates among teens which means that significantly fewer adults have that nasty habit. I doubt many people are getting to their 20's and saying "You know what? I think I'll start smoking so all my clothes and my breath smell nasty and I have a very good chance of developing cancer because of it."
Now vaping rates are going up among teens and that's probably almost as bad as smoking regular cigarettes because of all the chemicals in vape cartridges, but at least with vaping you don't have the absolutely disgusting smell going along with it.
oldridingplum@reddit
Duh. Notice I did say "if they can meaningfully enforce it." To your point, until this vaping shit came around and got advertised like it's candy, the amount of kids who smoked went down, a lot.
railworx@reddit
If something's illegal, or considered "wrong" or bad, kids will find a way to do it/be involved one way or another, thats my point.
Big_Metal2470@reddit
Meh. These kids today drink and fuck way less than we did.Ā
Cheese-Manipulator@reddit

Not ever having full time lives around kids, especially those weāve always been closer to, made it so that this angle was never on our radars,

I wonder if itās also the death of āclub cultureā? I went out dancing almost every night for awhile, there were places to go dancing every night of the week with multiple options of genre, āgay nightsā, etc. Itās my understanding that none of that really exists now? There were endless places to go dancing in the late 90s through the early 2000s. I remember watching people I went out with noticeably improve over time because everyone was dancing, all the time.
thehoagieboy@reddit
Can confirm. As someone that is solidly GenX, I went out and had more than a few too many and ended up on a friends phone as video-fodder. That has to be a small taste of what those gens are dealing with.

I am 50 so I guess very slightly older, and I couldn't dance when I was 15, or at any point since.
I used to be able to get drunk enough not to care, but I grew out of wanting to, and am now at the point where due to health issues, I couldn't get drunk if I wanted to.
Winter-eyed@reddit
Dancing used to be fun and you could do it without looking like a stripper.
Bitter-Ad-6709@reddit
The real reason? Because if they can't do it on their phones with the push of a button, an app, or by taking a picture, they don't know how to do it.
This applies to everything in life for them. Whether it's typing on a typewriter, reading or writing in cursive, simple math, or counting back change. I SWEAR they can't count change back, or do math in their heads, to save their lives!!
Want to confuse a GenZ, Millennial, or anyone else coming up after them? When your fast food order comes to six dollars and change, say $6.57, give them a ten dollar bill and either two ones ($12) or $11.60. (You know, so you'll get a $5 bill back, instead of three $1 dollar bills.) They'll stare at what you handed them with a blank look on their face for 10+ seconds, like you just asked them where babies come from.
Flippn unbelievable

That's the problem, though. People should just let go and move to the music. It doesn't have to look good. As long as they aren't bumping into other people or making fun of someone else, nobody else should judge ... even if it's televised.

Iām 47 yrs old. I still go clubbing (on the rare occasion I can get someone to go with me) Last year I was doing my thing on the dance floor and a bunch of college aged girls were kind of surrounding me and trying to imitate. It was a little weird, but kinda flattering and I was lit so⦠ha.
Fast forward to the next day; hungover, my quads are reminding me that I dropped it low a few too many times (but I got back up!) and the coffee isnāt reducing the fog of excess. I hear a girlās voice squeal āOMG, itās you! I recognize your fanny pack!ā (itās a brightly colored Cotopaxi- fairly standout)
She then proceeded to ask if I were a professional dancer.
I am not a professional. I took three ballroom dancing classes about 25 years ago⦠so I can do a box step, but thatās mostly irrelevant. No. No one can dance anymore.

These kids no longer have sock hops to go to after football games. (at least where we live) That was the best part of high school IMHO.
Obwyn@reddit
Well, with everyone having a smartphone with an HD video camera in their pocket with thousands of assholes eager to post videos of random strangers on the internet for millions of people to view and make fun of the person there is probably a pretty big reluctance to do things that might make you look dumb or turn you into a meme, especially taken out of context.
I can't say I blame them. How often does everyone who made it through their teen years before 2000 say "I'm glad social media didn't exist when I was growing up"? I know I'm glad some of the stuff I did back in the 90's is not on the internet and even the photos would require the one or two people with a copy to bother scanning it and then posting it for anyone to see it.
Mr_Stike@reddit
I'm 55 and can't dance, I don't think it's really a generational issue.
LowCommunication9517@reddit
I noticed that too. Last party I attended, only people dancing were age 46 plus and maybe one or two younger. When I was young, my sisters and our friends danced till our clothes were soaked in sweat. One exception, however, is the young people of my cultural background, they love to Zydeco dance, which is refreshing. I am glad it made a resurgence after almost dying out in the 80s. But eve still, they do more line dancing than partner dancing and there is a lot more standing around than what we did when I was younger.

I think lack of inhibition might make someone better in bed in some ways, but Iāve equally danced with plenty of inhibited people whose selfishness and need to be centre stage made them awful dance partners. We had the good fortune of growing up with lots of ādancing is awesomeā movies: Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Flashdance, Fame, Grease, ā¦. These showed how dance is something that everyone and anyone can do.
This generation has So You Think You Can Dance, [Group]ās Got Talent, and Dancing With the Stars; which are fun, but definitely cast dance as something with limited access and only for elite performers.
AdMountain6203@reddit
They have TikTok dances that relatively few people try to do and post online. How do you list movies and leave out Breakin' 2?
Living-Jeweler-5600@reddit
How do you cite Breakinā 2 without including the Electric Boogaloo??
Sa7aSa7a@reddit
I was on my phone and it was fighting me on Boogaloo and I said "Fuck it, I'm about to clock out of work and need to focus on that".
Kimba26@reddit
If your phone fights the Boogaloo it is cursed and you need a new phone.
Cross_22@reddit
I can't stand those shows; they only take the fanciest moves and get rid of any kind of connecting elements making all the dances look disjointed and hollow.
psgrue@reddit
DWTS, I agree. It would be like taking a Hollywood actor and Saquon Barkley teaching them NFL football for a 3 minute demonstration. Itās going to be very basic.
SYTYCD is like taking 4 and 5 star recruits and Saquon Barkley teaching them. Much higher level of performance.
YogurtclosetFair5742@reddit
Dancing with the Stars is ballroom dancing mostly. Not club dancing.
Slow-Complaint-3273@reddit
True, but it still frames dance as something only āother peopleā can do.

I grew up in Bomont, so we were not legally allowed to dance.

These kids don't leave the house let alone go to a dance or club. When I was in Jr-Sr high we had dances after every home football game and throughout the winter. The 80's and 90's were a great time to grow up.
Human_Suggestion7373@reddit
Everyone knows how to dance, it is built in to use. Most people are just too self conscious.
WolfPacker01@reddit
I never really felt comfortable or coordinated enough in my own body to dance and no one to really reach me. Also, Dirty Dancing came out when I was about about 12 and it seemed like at every jr. high dance people were trying to emulate the ādirty dancingā from that movie and would just grind on each other.

Well for one thing, dance(cotillion) classes for young people went out with the boomers as a fairly common young personās experience. I recently found out my oldest brother who spent all his time attached to a book or a drafting table, very shy, was forced to go to dancing lessons age 11. Elder gen x was the last time there was organized pair dancing as a common experience via the Saturday Night Fever/Urban Cowboy cultural trickle down to jr high and high school dances, with a brief blip again in the 90ās with the swing revival scene. So your chances of meeting someone on the dance floor who knew how to dance or could pick up the idea quickly went down as the age of free styling and hip hop gained more influence in dance style. And in between, who was dancing to grunge? We might have called it dancing but ecstatic jumping and faith falls is more apt.
And as someone who does random dance workouts once a week to maintain some idea of brain to muscle focus and coordination, newer dance forms are just so intense and challenging to me. Whereever those twerk muscles might be, my back knees ankles and hips wonāt quite take me there. I am an aging dance dork.
Kimba26@reddit
I don't know about other places but it is my understanding that the high school I went to no longer has dances. Too many kids. I don't know that there are a lot of opportunities to dance socially with their peers. They probably think its "cringe".

We took some west coast swing classes when we first got mated. It was fun. She has no rhythm but mellow stuff sheād follow my lead fine. OTOH she was wicked a raves (she says thatās the Molly butā¦). If I tried to dance now, my spine would go all Jenga. Kinda miss it. Hands are too busted up to play bass anymore. Have to settle for wicked awesome air-bass.
Both her grandparents and mine swing danced into their 80s.
Our offspring danced professionally, until they didnāt. Eldest is pursuing medicine, the Youngest is managing a high end weed dispensary. Not much fancy dancinā in either of those paths. The Eldest still goes to EDM festivals and taught her fella to salsa dance and he tags along to clubs with her like a giantass puppy.
What were we talkinā about again? Youngest gave me a pen to try and I currently ran out of Frosted Flakes.
Booziesmurf@reddit (OP)
You have to remember, our EDM producers are still on the go in their 60s. Also our kids are growing up raving to Remixes of their Parents music.
FrostnJack@reddit
My Eldest was shocked to find out raves used to be underground & illegal. We found a box with some pics and scraps from the coded hunt to find one back in the days of yore⦠she was disappointed everything costs money and lacks the adventure quality we enjoyed. I showed her the scar on my knee from jumping a chain link fence running when a rave was shut down. She was like you said that was from mountain biking. I was like you were five I wasnāt gonna tell you I got it running from the copsā¦
The she showed us a mark on her knee from jumping a wall at a party to escape the cops. We had us a lil bonding moment

You have rhythm as a drummer. Most people wish they had that. You can follow a beat, just move your body like a drumstick, your hips are your instruments.
Cross_22@reddit
As a ballroom dancer I usually don't care what other people do, but I would just love to have some decent danceable music at events. At our kid's school they hosted a decades dance with music from the 1950s through early 1990s - no problem with any of that.
However, we went to three other dance clubs and the 2000s EDM / Techno / Hip-Hop just doesn't allow for any kind of partner dancing. It's just people hopping up & down while waving a hand in the air.
retired_hippy_chick@reddit
Right! I love salsa dancing for this reason. I like to dance with a partner. I think the connection and having fun with the music is what itās all about.
I take a few different styles of choreography dance classes a few times a week and theyāre my least favorite. Itās not like youāre going to go to the club and do the solo choreo routine. When youāre out everyone is just bopping up and down to the music.
Booziesmurf@reddit (OP)
Omg. I dance with my hips. I also do "Aerobic dancing" which is what I call skipping in place to the beat while waving away the bees.
retired_hippy_chick@reddit
I love it! So fun! There were a few decades when I didnāt have time for it but I still went to dance aerobics after work to get my groove on. Now that Iām retired I go out dancing all the time. So fun :)

I'm talking about being able to keep a beat. Like this young guy was moving his hips side to side off beat, and managing to look awkward at the same time, which is the same dance moves I know from a guy in his 70s trying to look young. The other guys his age were just sitting around saying they don't dance.
lovebeinganasshole@reddit
Well to be fair we or at least my town had 18+ dance clubs, multiple groups of young adults that rented warehouses hired DJs and charged at the door, and of course your Friday and Saturday parties.
Current teenagers spent 2020-2023 in lockdown.

Smart phones, social media, and gaming.
Kids stay home and do not socialize like they did before all of these things became popular. Before social media/smart phones/gaming, kids had to leave their houses for socializing.
When you get a bunch of kids together, music is a natural accompaniment. Where there are kids and music for long periods of time, dancing is not far behind.
No in person socializing is why kids don't dance.
