interestingly the Toyota Camry today is a much better value compared to 1994! back then C&D said the msrp for the lowly DX trim of the Camry was $20k, but today the base trim is $30k. With inflation it should've doubled, but it's only gone up by 50%.

It’s hard to overstate how impressive the intrepid was when it came out. It was lightyears ahead of everyone else in terms or ride quality, space etc. They used to be EVERYWHERE. I must have done the east to west PA trip at triple digits in that car at least two dozen times. At 110 the power to the engine would cut off abruptly.

Everywhere, and nowhere. I hardly remember them. As a Southern Californian (south of LA), it was Accords, Altimas, and Camrys with some 626s sprinkled throughout. I go months without seeing an Intrepid or Sonata from this period, weeks without seeing a Lumina or Altima. But it’s days between sighting of an Accord, Camry, or Legacy.

Seeing all these old comparison tests makes me wonder if the modern editors would have similar opinions about these cars if they were given factory-fresh examples today.

Woefully underbraked, blessed with both poor acceleration and low fuel mileage, equipped with sound systems that fit only the letter and not the spirit of the phrase. Also, broooooooooooowwwwwwwwnnnn.

Legit win for Van. Pantoja tried to stop the takedown but at 35, you don't get away with the shit you used to.

I grew up in the back of a 1993 Intrepid ES, the only new car my parents ever bought. It was a great car when the transmission didn't need replacing. It still lasted over 200k and didn't die until 2008 when Hurricane Ike dropped some tree branches on it.

Dodge Intrepid and Hyundai Sonata >> Toyota Camry? WTF?

It’s not a reliability ranking, it’s what you got for the same kind of money when new. The Hyundai and the Dodge gave you a V6 for the same price as the I4 in the Camry, which had no torque. Also the Camry was priced high, but it wasn’t expensive because the car was nice it was expensive because it was built to last, which the first owner doesn’t care about nor the publication. FWIW the Camry is absolutely the best choice that you could have made, but personally if I was in 1994 I would have gotten an intrepid, cab forward styling, huge, V6, and back then more people bought domestic to “support the country” so that was a plus for many in that time period.

I had an intrepid, a 2001, I bought in like 2013 for 3k I think. That car was massive, also was a pretty smooth drive. Not engaging by any means, but I could see why it would have been an attractive offer when new.
