Are Campbells really as hated as all that?

When I was around 8 I sat next to a Scotsman on a flight and he very patiently explained why I and everyone in my family was a piece of shit, and my father said that he was once buying a round in a UK pub and someone refused to drink with him after finding out his last name. These incidents were both long ago and I was curious if this attitude still persists.

They certainly used to be, but I'd be surprised if it's common now - folk history isn't as well known as it once was. Apart from being one of the most powerful clans, the Campbells supported the English during the Jacobite risings. Large parts of Scotland never forgave them.

Years late to reply. Clan Campbell did not participate in the Massacre as a clan action. It was a british redcoat regiment that was sent to Glencoe. The Regiment was led by a Campbell and there were a COUPLE Campbells amongst the rank and file. The rest were all made up of other Scots. The Massacre was ordered by King William. This was NOT a clan action. This was NOT a Campbell vs MacDonald situation. Please dont further an already misrepresented and horrifically misunderstood event with misinformation. Many Macdonald men, women and children died that day and it was because of the English monarchy not clan feuding.

Not to mention the Campbells of Breadalbane supported the Jacobite Risings, the Clan was never a monolith, different cadet branches and smaller lairdoms feuded amongst each other and fought against each other many times throughout history. It’s annoying, people have such a black and white view of it all.
