G-ZZZE, the most unloved 777 of all time?

For the 777 fleet, in addition to ZZZx which looks a bit like “777”: VIIx - Roman numerals for 7… RAES for Royal Aeronautical Society, assigned to the aircraft that would’ve been VIII in sequence (but the registration was already in use). YMMx - reportedly for “Year 2000”, when the RR 777s were due to arrive. STBx - reportedly “STretched Boeing” (-300ERs) Along other lines for other fleets: BNWx - Brand New Widebody (767 fleet) BNLx - Brand New Longhaul (747-400) XWBx - eXtra Wide Body (A350, borrowing Airbus’ own marketing lines) XLEx - eXtra Large European (A380) TTNx - Three-Twenty Neo (320N) TTOx - Supposedly Three-Two-0 (GB Airways 320s) EUPx - basically EUroPean LCYx - London City (RJ100/E70/E90) LCAx - London City Airport (E90) MIDx - inherited MIDland aircraft from bmi, and fairly self explanatory for their original operator! More tenuously, supposedly: ZBJx - Z for “dream” (as in zzzzzz) Boeing Jet aircraft CIVx - this was supposedly intended to convey “400” (as in 747-400) with some dodgy interpretation of some Roman numerals… the theory goes it was C (100) x (IV) 4, but actually reads 104… I’m sure there’s more, but supposedly many BA registration sequences are supposed to mean something (at least the starting sequence… EUUx, EUOx, EUYx etc all stem from the starting sequences for 319/320 fleets etc).

BA's Concocrdes were BOAx, with the first registered G-BOAC for 'British Overseas Airways Corporation', one of two airlines to merge into BA in 1974 and the one that would've operated Concorde had the merger not happen. The rest of their Concordes were registed around that. BA also operated a pair of all-business class A318s from LCY to JFK via Shannon. The first was registed G-EUNA, supposedly meant to be 'Europe to North America'. The second was then registered G-EUNB, though I felt they missed a trick by not registering it G-NAEU, symbolising the return trip.

It was, for me, the most important livery in the world. When I was I kid, I used to watch planes land at National Airport. It was mostly Delta 727s and USAir 727s and 737s. Those were, to me, big, impressive, luxurious jets. Then, on rare occasion, we'd go to Dulles. Dulles is where important businessmen in suits would board jumbo jets to fly to foreign countries, across the entire world. Those planes were the varsity league: Off-limits to kids, probably extremely expensive to fly, and, in my mind, a step below the Space Shuttle in terms of importance. Flying one of those planes was an important, almost historic event. And British Airways was the most important of all. After all, what is more special and important than going to London? To my knowledge as a child, the great American cities were New York and San Francisco and the great foreign *places* were London and Japan. (Hong Kong and Singapore were important places in China.) British Airways, then, was the highest-class, most significant airline in the world. From what I could tell, every British Airways plane was a 747. And the BA livery was the perfect compliment. It struck me as powerful, serious, business. Sharp lines, strong colors. When I watched my dad board it at the gate, I was proud of him. So, for a six year old with too many model planes, a BA 747 was the most awe-inducing ship on Earth.

This almost exactly echoes my childhood but at SFO instead. We were absolutely a PSA family for the most part with some USAir thrown in for medium-haul (to the Midwest), but being *at* SFO meant I got to see all these huge, amazing planes that flew to countries I could only dream of visiting. Even 35+ years later, my family is still amazed (or weirded out) by my ability to tell an airline based solely on its livery even miles away. Just something that stuck with me and something I think is pretty easy.

Flew twice from Dublin to Dulles via Heathrow on B744 and later on a B767. BA222 and BA223 were the flight numbers - the flight numbers don’t exist anymore because the planes were always delayed so they changed the flight number due to bad reputation.

ZE was one of 5 Boeing 777-200s ordered by, and delivered to British Airways in the mid 1990s. British Airways soon found the -200 unsuited for what they wanted and instantly switched to ordering the -200ER instead. British Airways continued with all 5 of their -200s for a few years but, in the wake of 9/11, they soon found they had too many long-haul aircraft for the market. Deciding to cut down their fleet size, G-ZZZE and her sister ZD were both sold back to Boeing in 2002, with ZE being broken up in 2006, just 10 years after her delivery. This made her the very first 777 to be broken up.

That's the same airframe. It was finally broken up completely, and removed.

It’s an absolute shame that the 747s carrying the legacy liveries only flew a few months before covid hit and they were grounded.

BA seem to have a habit of painting special liveries and then retiring the aircraft not long after. They did it with the 757 too.

BA was crazy for changing their livery. This would still look good today.

Boeing tried to avoid the MMM hull loss, saying they were going to rebuild the entire air raft as to not tarnish the 777 reputation. BA and the insurer both declined, and the aircraft was ultimately scrapped.

Everything from the lifejackets to gauges, and the AIMS PCs were taken, either for the other 777 in BA's fleet, or for their simulators! I'm not sure how much was left for the scrap yard though!

I wish there was a way to know what aircraft were on which routes in the 90's. I flew on a few BA 777's and would be great to know if it was one of these birds

Was there any particular reason why she was so unloved? Or just luck of the draw? Also, that livery reminds me of the Rothmans-Williams cars of the ‘90s. Lovely scheme.
View on Reddit #7462523

RevoltingHuman@reddit (OP)

Yes, it is a bit like the Rothmans-Williams. BA began phasing out the Landor with the introduction of the World Tails liveries in 1997, which was also the last year Williams had Rothmans sponsorship.
