An astigmatism. It means you have cylinder power in your glasses or connect Rx. Basically your prescription isn't the same at every point in your glasses. If your Rx is -1.00 -2.00 x 180 then at the 180 degree mark ( horizontal plane) your Rx is -1.00. at 90 degrees, it's -3.00. between 180 degrees and 90 degrees, it's somewhere between the two. This is because your eye isn't completely round it's more football or the back of a spoon shaped. It results in things looking a little bit more smeared when it's uncorrected. But this causes glare issues as well.

My wife has stigmatism and always said she hated driving at night. I keep her windscreen clean and now it doesn't bother her as much. It only takes a couple of times a year to give it a good clean then the odd buff with a microfiber cloth.

A lot of newer cars don't have a way to do that. Older cars you didn't just change the bulb it was the whole assembly. With newer cars the bulb just poos out so the headlight assembly isn't disturbed so manufacturers just assume we never have to aim them from what they are set at during production.

Yup... I know that... And a lot of modern cars don't have it anymore. As I said above. Since we aren't fucking with the whole assembly manufacturers aren't including it anymore or just making it more difficult to get at without removing a bunch of trim and panels.

Even modern cars with super fancy adaptive headlight features have leveling mechanisms. You might need to take it to the dealership service center because the assembly is too convoluted to be adjusted with just a screwdriver without removing parts, but all headlights can — and should be — adjusted.

Yes... That's exactly what I am saying... It's not just a diy adjustment anymore. It's technical so you pay $100+ per hour shop time for something that used to take a level surface, a wall, tape measure, masking tape and a screw driver. The ability to do it has been removed.

And what I’m saying is that not wanting to pay to get it done is not the same as “it can’t be done”. You buy a new car off the assembly line, the headlights should be adjusted so as to not blind oncoming drivers. Whether you can do it yourself with a screwdriver or you have to have the dealer do it for you, make sure to adjust the headlights! That’s it.

A popular thing for teens to do around here is put lift kits on older trucks and install HID or LED headlights on them. Those are the absolute worst. Throw some rain into the mix and I’m totally guessing where I am on the road.

Its like they're now blindingly white bright, but somehow aren't actually any better at illuminating the surroundings. You can kinda tell when you see a few cars with older headlights in the mix, but those are increasingly less common.

Please hear me out. Folks need to clean their windscreens. Spend some time cleaning and drying your windscreen. When you're done put a clean microfiber cloth in the car and if it's still difficult to see at night give it another buff. I'm 44 with fairly good eyesight and have learned driving many different cars, trucks, machinery etc throughout my life that clean glass is very important. I'm not a clean freak by any means but clean glass is important.

Your use of "windscreen" makes me think you're in the UK, where every other car isn't a heavy-duty pickup and after-market LED headlights are illegal. A clean windshield (outside AND inside) will help some, but we're kind of effed here in the US no matter what thanks to modern car trends.

Your point is very valid. We don't have the same number or jacked up trucks. I don't think aftermarket LED headlights are illegal here and if they are it's not enforced. We also have stricter guidelines regarding cars allowed on the road with annual checks for cars over 4 years old. One of the checks are headlight leveling, directions and brightness. Although I don't think they can be too bright.

Yeah, hate it. Especially in the rain. (Conversely, I am happy for snow/fog because of how the lights hit it.) And I hate LED headlights. Makes it worse that my stupid state won't even use the reflective road paint, so sometimes if I'm in an unfamiliar area I can lose tracking of the lanes themselves.

Are they like blue blockers? I've been seriously considering doing something like that. I had a pair of very lightly tinted safety glasses I used to wear sometimes if I was driving for a long stretch at night that helped with the oncoming headlights but they also had drawbacks like I would have been less likely to see a deer coming out of the dark in time.

Ugh yeah. I'm only 39, but have a bad astigmatism in both eyes. Just within the past year or so I started noticing the lights getting a bit bursty and having more trouble seeing the lane lines on the highway at night. Makes driving a hell of a lot scarier. I try to avoid it at night whenever I can.

Both of my parents have night blindness. It started setting in for me when I was 15. At 34 I was struggling but determined to drive whenever I wanted. I was going down the road with passengers in the car. I was doing ok until I went around a corner and there were so many lights, headlights, streetlights etc and all the halos overlapped. I got completely blinded for a sec. I drove onto the median and stopped right before I ran into a signpost.

I don't drive at night unless it's basically an emergency or I'm only going a mile or so. I can't see a fucking thing at night anymore if there's other lights around. I guess I didn't notice it for a long time living in a crazy lit city but as soon as I moved to the sticks I realized how bad my eyes have become.

I hate the bright ass headlights so many cars have now. Especially since as we get older it takes longer to recover our night vision after being blinded by them. Funny enough I actually find the freeway at night much easier than surface streets. Oncoming is separated by a large median so the lights are less of an issue and my car has auto dimming mirrors to deal with the lights from behind (I will never own a car without this feature).

It’s the same for me. Where I live the freeways are well lit, but many surface streets are not. So many neighborhoods either don’t have streetlights or the city is way behind on fixing the broken ones. I get more nervous running errands in my neighborhood in the evenings vs. driving long distances.

I got the start of this already 15 years back when after laser eye surgery (which was fantastic otherwise and I don't regret at all) my night vision was noticeably worse afterwards. It's straight up terrible now. Pedestrians/dog walkers wearing dark colours are literally invisible and most of our neighbourhood doesn't have sidewalks. I take it real easy in the mornings until I'm off residential streets.

In my 20s, I would go driving at night because it was dark and calm and quiet. I loved it and once ended up halfway across the state because I was in the zone and just kept going. These days, I plan my day around whether or not I can make it home before dark.
