I have the outlier, and decidedly immature, opposite opinion. At least at the time, I didn't like it because none of the other characters were in it really.
TBF, I was a stupid kid and I haven't seen it in a long time. I think I'm probably mature enough to appreciate it what it for what it is now. But, back then, I was just like, "This is boring, where's the crew?!"
It's an amazing episode that only gets better as you get older, but it's definitely understandable why it wouldn't appeal to a lot of kids (bracing myself for "I saw it when I was six and immediately knew it was a masterpiece!")
As an adult who has someone in their life they love, the episode is so much more impactful. He lived a whole life with his wife... It was so real, and then bam. You wake up and none of it was real, but it all was real. Just the flute to remind you of a whole culture you were part of, your wife, friends, children, all gone.
I'm not alone! And, ya, that is a heavy conceit. Proper, old school sci-fi like the best of Trek was known for. I bet Sir Patrick killed it too. I really should make time for a rewatch.
That moment when Data breaks the connection between Picard and the probe and Picard immediately starts dying ... that's exactly how it feels when an ad interrupts your viewing.

TNG predicted, that people will accept thing which only happened in their head as reality.

They cheat a little bit. We still don't learn to play the flute that way.

It's a lot of weight to carry.
