Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo - sigh

My high school freshmen started Romeo and Juliet in English. I therefore lost my mind and took her on a visual tour of Leonard DiCaprio in the 90s. Mom, she says, he looks like Conrad from The Summer I Turned Pretty. I was like, child, how dare you? PS: we definitely convinced our English teacher to take us on a field trip to see Romeo + Juliet in theaters and she was so mad at us afterwards. Thought it was terrible.

That scene where he's smoking a cigarette while "talk show host" by Radiohead is playing was peak for my teenage self.

Me too.
It was my comfort movie. Take a shower, put on my wide leg pipe jeans, and watch it.

My first kiss was shortly before I saw this movie so I was already girl crazy. The aquarium scene was the final nail in the coffin from my transition from video games and comic books to girls. After that, video games never stood a chance.

Definitely a good look for him. I get the girl-fawning.
I was more a Christina Ricci/Fairuza Balk guy.

They made such a big deal about the nipples, and it was such a short shot of them.

Seriously.
jumps out of bed
bounce
bounce
grabs robe
"Get out, its daylight, you idiot!!!"
They did her dirty by lying to her about it. That should be the scandal.

Olivia Hussey was 15 btw

Yeah…I meant a big deal in terms of teenage boys being way too excited about it and some classes not showing it because of that.

Haha my English teacher paused the tape to put construction paper on the TV during that part.

He was such a great Mercutio that I can’t imagine anyone else in the role!
But yeah, same, Romeo + Juliet hadn’t been released on tape yet so we had Olivia Hussey.

Loved Leo as a kid, since growing pains. I had that movie on VHS and watched it an embarrassing number of times over the years. It was so unique in its time. Baz kind of came out of nowhere and assaulted our minds lol

It was terrible. I agree.
It always noted me they made it more modern but didn’t change the language. Othello was better.
Also JTT was much better than LEO

The modern setting with original script was exactly what I loved about it! Also, it's directed by Baz Luhrmann, whom I appreciate, but isn't everyone's taste.
thenewblueblood@reddit
Agree…I thought the original script was a slam dunk. I wish they’d done the same with O and 10 Things I Hate About You.
sjd208@reddit
Yeah, Baz Luhrmann is definitely a very particular taste! You’ll pry Strictly Ballroom from my cold dead hands though.
drkittymow@reddit
The original play is full of dirty jokes and violence. Therefore the setting was modern but accurate. The original was basically a gritty story about teen thugs from crappy families. It was never meant to be proper and fancy like we tend to interpret it in most films.
HeywoodJaBlessMe@reddit
It is fantastic and rightly regarded as a classic today.

Ugh he never really did it for me at that age- I never had a thing for the “twee” type boyish looking guys ever. I did like the movie a lot though and so wanted to be Claire Danes that it hurt, I loved her look and style at the time.

My top 3 were always Elizabeth Hurley, Naomi Watts, and Jennifer Connelly - I don't know if that means I have a type
KeyFeeFee@reddit
Ok but the kid who plays Conrad really could be Leonardo’s little cousin. I thought that the whole time on that show, complete with the stupid hair LOL
SurviveDaddy@reddit
I was initially unhappy when my girlfriend at the time dragged me to see this in the theater.
But I will say that the action and humor, really made up for a story I would normally have no interest in.
Tromeo & Juliet (1996) is also worth watching.

For the cow potion scene alone.

that’s cute!
