Is there a way I can fix my mistake? I am trying to release this strap but I can't fully open it.

get the release catch to sit up and then kick the fucking thing hard. it'll come undone

I have been in situations like this, you can put more tension on the strap and walk the strap off by alternating between the top piece and bottom. I have also done the screwdriver trick but its more difficult than youd expect.

Y'all fucking kidding with the use a hammer/ cut the strap "advice"??? Just take some tension off the inner catch, pull it down, ease the ratchet back and repeat until you can release buth catches. Some of you saying how to use a ratchet strap haven't ever used one yourself IFSTG

My boss wanted to cut the strap too, I knew there was a way to release it, but I didn't know how. Now I know!
Own_Leg_5595@reddit
There is a small piece of metal (with a spring attached) under the rolled up strap in the pic.
Pull that down.

Thanks

I would hit it with some wd-40 on the rachet gear/teeth and the small gap between the rachet frame and the gear.. then use winch bar, not fingers
JColeTheWheelMan@reddit
This, but don't put your fingers anywhere you wouldn't put your dick. Get a pry bar/thick flathead screwdriver in there and keep your fingers out of the way. There are hundreds of pounds of potential energy in that mechanism.

This.

You’re right, but there’s no need to release it with all the tension on it. Release the handle and pull it down some, and then push it up like you’re trying to tighten it just a little bit but not past the next click of the ratchet, that releases the tension on the pawl. Pull the pawl down and slowly let the handle up. Repeat as necessary until it is loose.

https://imgur.com/1W9nGxV - The paw you can pull down on in the middle if you can't get it with just your finger, you can take a screw driver for some leverage.

Thank you, it helped a lot

Also use the handle to take off some of the tension. You can walk the ratchet mechanism one click at a time till it’s loose enough to open all the way
up3r@reddit
If you still have your fingers, you can manipulate this by trying to tighten it and then whenever the pressure is released you use your fingers to pull down on that piece of metal that keeps the tension. This will probably take about 5-6 "bites" at it until you're loose enough to just do it normally.
CaptainGibbs96@reddit
Bring the top down and then push the other way to take pressure off the bottom catch. Pull down on the bottom catch and the up on the upper catch. Work ratchet back a few inches. Should be able to remove the strap from there
BatmanKane64@reddit
if all else fails, use a hammer. if that doesn’t get the job done, cut the strap and take it off. start over

Nah he can reach the lock mechanism with a screwdriver or something.
Slow_Concentrate3720@reddit
Use your braker bar on the metal slide under the spool
commandough@reddit
Unscrew the bolt on the side, might work depending on the tension
Unfair_Fisherman_605@reddit
WD-40 on the ratchet portion and a screwdriver in the metal slot where the spring is, pull down on ratchet at the same time and it should give you enough room to get it off from there.
Kindly_Region@reddit
Use a screw driver or prybar to get that bottom locking mechanism to realese
Maybe a hammer and a piece of metal, put it in there and tap it down to get it to realese
