I was consider an emoto until I saw the prices...

Who's spending $8000 for a Surron when a Honda CRF is functionally better for the same price?
Is it just the fact people are excited about an electric drivetrain?
Significant-Fun4205@reddit
Yea I just watched a Surron win a motorcross event against combustion engine dirt bikes so naw your wrong.
Loxxsyyy@reddit
As a teen myself, emotos are mostly being used by rich California kids who don't care abt the price, since their parents are gonna buy it anyways. Why not gas? First of all gas means endless rides to the station and back, which is different with an emoto - rideout with friends, comeback home, take the battery out and put it on charge, go to another rideout the next morning. Secondly, most gas bikes are too big, heavy, loud and ugly for most teens. Most kids consider buying an emoto instead because of how esthetic it looks. Another reason is that there is no way you r riding an actual motorcycle without a license plate or a proper registration, there is no excuse for the cops. For an emoto though the laws allow you to ride it if it's 20mph or less, so you can just put a limiter when you get pulled over. Lastly, most parents wouldn't allow their kids to ride a motorcycle - too fast. Me personally? Yeah there is no way I'll be considering a gas bike if I have 3k for an lbx (8k for a surron is overpriced)
Easy-Lucky-Free@reddit
Surron light bees are available for like 3.5k and ultra bees for like 4.5k, before shipping.
If you don't use Alibaba you'll get markup from local dealerships, but I haven't seen any close to 8k lol.
el_myco_profesor@reddit
I got a 2021 zero fx for $4000, which is a wildly better bike than any surron
THEENTIRESOVlETUNION@reddit
a wildly different class of bike*
el_myco_profesor@reddit
For less $….
THEENTIRESOVlETUNION@reddit
again though, meant for absolutely different purposes, you could buy an old built 4x4 jeep for more than a toyota camry. neither would be a bad option for the money, just have different uses
celeste_ferret@reddit
And it can be registered, plated, and insured for legal on-road use.
Duct_TapeOrWD40@reddit
Some places (dirtparks, local laws) allows zero emission vehicles only. Originally horses, and mountain bikes, but so far they don't mind Ebikes, Surrons, etc. This way you can technically and legally get around any zero emission law.
The other thing is.... reliability. I own multiple bikes. A 2 stroke, a 4 stroke, and an Ebike. Guess which one can drive in 20 seconds and can give nominal power seconds after a cold start (with a roomwarm battery). The Ebike.
The 4 stroke is raliable too, but starts harder, and need to warm up until you can use it's full power. The 2-stroke has it's own will. Too cold? Not happenenig, until you choke it. Keeping the choke 0.5 sec longer than it needs too? congratulations you flooded the sparkplug. The 2 stroke carb need regular cleaning too. no matter if you use it or not.
Breynolds003@reddit
Ride1up Revv1 costs around $2000 last time I checked, can easily get mine past 40mph stock for about 32 miles
With Surrons you're just paying for the brand, never saw the appeal with them
el_myco_profesor@reddit
Torque
hicker223@reddit
Personally, I see petroleum as only going to get more and more expensive. I can charge 100Ah 96V battery to full from dead for 16 cents (if my math is right), as opposed to 3.49 (cheapest local gas for me) for a single gallon of gas. And tbh even if my math is off my 10x that's still only 1.16, which is less than half of that gallon of gas. So for me it really is just about the economics of riding a lot of miles.
ataun94@reddit
Boy do I have news for you on the outlook for electricity prices
hicker223@reddit
They're going to go down as nuclear gets adopted as well as fusion. Also, I am hopeful a "socialist" president will come about and nationalize the energy industry.
hicker223@reddit
Lol I wonder what got my comment downvoted for. Pro-nuclear, pro-socialism, identifying the presidency could never have a true socialist, or nationalizing the energy industry. Dear downvoter, please tell me.
stormdelta@reddit
I downvoted on the grounds that the jury is still out on whether fusion is even a viable path forwards for nuclear, especially anytime soon.
I'm not even opposed to nuclear, I'm just tried of seeing misleading claims tossed around.
hicker223@reddit
Nuclear and fusion are very different and my friend that works in a fusion lab in Boston requires me to tell everyone that lol and we're basically around the corner from it being viable. 25 years max for the tech, 50 for commercialization. Which in terms of human development is pretty short. Yes, it's long for humans and not viable for the ebike conversation, but now I think this specific conversation for w.e reason has turned into energy scaling potentials which I think is a bit silly. And they're not misleading claims. I never claimed that fusion was some kind of widely used product. I simply intimated that as time progresses fusion will be part of the equation more and more.
Now on the nuclear front, the modern reactors quite literally when built correctly cannot go super-critical. That is a fact. The only way they can fail is if they are not built correctly or maintained. Which is a very real concern, but I also think to then just throw it away as a concept is just nonsense. Government can be flawed, private business too, we still use them lol I think skepticism is good but not wonton pessimism.
Squishybs@reddit
I was not a downvoter but I am a Nuclear skeptic. My main concerns are timeline and cost. Realistically a USA nuclear plant best case scenario starting right now would be 15 years away and 15 billion dollars per reactor. And then personally because I am a pessimist about the likelihood that the US would complete the project in an average timeline and cost compared to nations that have continuously built nuclear power plants so I would be totally unsurprised if those numbers double. The kicker on this all is that 15 billion and 15 years would be more than enough to build not just the equivalent amount of power generation from wind and solar, but also power storage which is the expensive and controversial bit! And it would never take more than 10 years including design time because we have an active industry with current precedent of how long it will take, and storage batteries are currently dropping in price due to the improving and competing chemistries, which is a big deal since everything else is getting more expensive! So ignoring all the culture war bullshit I just don't see how going hard on nuclear really makes sense for the basic economic and infrastructure goals.
hicker223@reddit
People seem to think I meant like... we'd have nuclear reactors tomorrow??? Nah dude lol even cutting regulation (while not compromising on safety) takes at least 5 years. But come on y'all don't be so pessimistic lol shit's bad but it'll get better :D
iH8MotherTeresa@reddit
It's a long game. We can (should) also invest in green energy as well
Cargobiker530@reddit
The idea that new nuclear & fusion power are going to be relevant within the working life of an ebike purchased in the next year seems to be delusional to most people.
hicker223@reddit
Well I didn't mean for it to be next year ffs come on get a brain. But energy costs in a long term projection are only going to go down. That's kind of just a fact IF we do adopt nuclear and fusion which to me seems inevitable.
YouCantBanM3@reddit
They are also very loud. Surrons are popular because you can get away riding where a dirtbike might annoy the neighborhood
BinghamL@reddit
1.60
Point still stands though.
hicker223@reddit
ope yeah you're right lol my life is currently in major chaos rn so I am forgetting to cross my I's and dot my T's
Jedski89@reddit
Emotos have terrible range. So if you want to ride a lot of miles, emotos ain't the one.
hicker223@reddit
Depends on what you consider terrible range tbh.
Choosemyusername@reddit
Lower maintenance and running costs. More reliability because electric have fewer moving and wear parts.
Also the sound. I really enjoy being able to hear everything around me when I ride. Plus not polluting the neighbor’s soundscapes in the tranquil countryside is just a good way to be.
surron2025@reddit
I am 57 years old and thrilled with my surron light Bee from 2025 The previous bike was a Suzuki gsf 1200 And both are just as much fun Regardless, there are mountain bikes from, for example, rothwild that cost €10,000 In return you also get a new 1000 Honda Hornet with 150 hp So much for the comparison of CRF 300 against Surron mentioned at the beginning ✌️ Just buy what you enjoy
borque82@reddit
not all emotes are same rexx t01 is 2699 only
pfhlick@reddit
No gas, you can trick mom and dad to buy it for you because it's called an "ebike," no gas, it's quiet (not sure that's a plus for everyone tbh), Surron sounds cool, kinda like Sauron...
I'm not a motorcycle guy but I'm surprised Honda doesn't make their own sick electric motorbikes, they would probably make the best damn one. I always tell people looking at overbuilt moto styled electric bicycles to save up a little bit for a real scooter, and they'll get a lot more for their money.
No gas though, that does sound pretty cool.
ImMikeJamesB1@reddit
I dont mean to fan a flame but most of these emotos claim to be ebikes and skirt legal laws everywhere they are used. I dont see any major company like Honda getting in on emotos given my first statement.
They are not really legal in any country. Sure you can legality drive them on private property, but we all know most don't get used legally.
UT07@reddit
What does this have to do with electric bicycles?
DalinsiaValkyrPrime@reddit
Sub allows all electric bike types, from your typical Class 1s to a Zero SR/S.
Bit of a controversial thing on here, though.
Easy-Lucky-Free@reddit
As someone that likes pretty much every two wheeled vehicle I've ever come across, the rivalry feels so fucking dumb.
DoubleOwl7777@reddit
the problem is the people thinking these are bicycles and riding them on bike paths. they are dirtbikes and should be treated as such
Easy-Lucky-Free@reddit
Agreed. Everything has its place. I love my pedal assist MTB for trail riding bike trails when I'm beat up. I love my normal MTB for trail riding when I have all day. I love my electric dirt bike for my local moto trails, that I'm very lucky to have access to.
Utsider@reddit
The rivalry is dumb, but as the category of vehicles keeps growing, it sort of makes sense to have separate subs for separate subreddits. It gets to a point where it makes as little sense as discussing mountain bicycles in a Harley sub. Info on either drowns in info about the other. Despite sharing common design traits, they're largely very different beasts.
But hey, it's not my sub. Just adding my 2 cents. Still love you.
Easy-Lucky-Free@reddit
I agree with that. I'm just sick of seeing people argue about the different types of two wheel things. Its some pretty mid content.
Utsider@reddit
Agreed. The bickering doesn't make anyone happy.
UT07@reddit
I know and I wish this sub didn't
Donnjvan@reddit
Let’s be honest. The vast majority of Surrons, Talarias, etc are primarily operated by suburban teens and never see dirt. They are stealthy little stunt, show off, and getaway vehicles. They are fast. And every kid wants one. I’m near retirement and these little dipshits piss me off with their unsafe antics in areas they shouldn’t be in, but if I were 13 again I’d definitely want one. I personally see them fading out of the teen ownership as LE come down on them and bigger better models for grownups continue to hit the market.
ForsakenRacism@reddit
Someone who doesn’t want to pay for gas and oil and maintenance
timbodacious@reddit
having something silent and fast to ride is something many people covet. It's mostly why they buy them because they are stealth and don't draw the same attention as brap brap brap.
funcentric@reddit
You’ré right. At some point, the price of an electric makes it no longer worth it. Imagine how much gas you can buy with the extra few grand.
band-of-horses@reddit
They are popular because people who can't get a license (teens, drunk drivers) can pretend they are bicycles and ride them around, or other people who just don't want to pay for registration and insurance can do the same.
Alex13445678@reddit
This is defidently a lot of the sales. Online personalities like surronster don’t help either.
Easy-Lucky-Free@reddit
Or the large community of adults that use them for their intended use... They are offroad vehicles that can be legally registered as off road vehicles and can be used on dirt bike trails.
There certainly are a lot of kids looking to post their dumb illegal activities on youtube, but that doesn't invalidate the large community using dirt bikes legally/responsibly. Like many other cases, the quiet majority just doesn't draw attention to themselves.
People have been illegally riding dirt bikes/ATVs through major cities for decades. Just look at Baltimore/DC/NY/Philly. That doesn't mean that's the only use.
kapnkaos86@reddit
MX4 goes for half that🤷🏻. I've been having a blast
