What was it with our generation and green slime?

Maybe it's just me, but looking back there seems to have been an awful lot of green slime in my childhood to early teens. There was Mattel's slime toy, there's Slimer from Ghostbusters and I have vague memories of at least a handful of further toys, cartoons, even some kids' game show where green slime featured prominently.

always looked fun in the commercials but i never got it also, i didn't want slime all over my toy

It actually started with the game show and everyone else followed suit. Popularized by Nickelodeon, at least in the US, and I think aligned with the 'Neon Era' we all experienced in the mid 80s. This color along with that orange color that makes you feel like your brain is bleeding is something I recall being everywhere for awhile. Eventually it expanded out into every highlighter color possible, then sometime around the slap bracelet just poofed out of existence in favor of future blacklight purple and chekov radiation blue.

Mattel's slime toy was around (and popular) for three years before the premier of You Can't Do That on Television

That's a really good explanation.
Evidently after radiation blue was followed by black light!

Such wonderfully fond memories with that frustratingly sticky substance. Ruined so quickly, with a single drop on the ground, but so mesmerizing at first..

I remember three main types - Masters of the Universe, Ghost Busters, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…… and later came all the Gak type slimes

I recall some in the Simpsons as well.

They must have made a giant vat of it in China by accident and sold it to American toy companies at a discount.
It was everywhere and then it was gone.
HangryHangryHedgie@reddit
Not gone! You could get huge jugs of it from child craft supplies so you could "make your own". We would fill a water table with it. Loooooooved it.
