Exactly, all of my old phones tend to go secondhand in an electronic store and you get top dollar if you can produce the box and any of the peripherals that it came with
As long as something functions and is intact, I keep on using it - over a decade in this case IIRC. I only traded it in, due to the apps no longer working, as the system was outdated, and the lack of replacement battery. I think the S3 was one of the last Samsung phones with a removable battery, but OEM was discontinued and read of quality issues with 3rd party options. IIRC, for less than $100, I traded it in for something I'll probably use until 2030.
I was going to learn how to root properly on the S3, but the battery issue was lead to reconsideration. Haven't reached this point yet with the A32, but I did remove a lot of bloatware apps.
My mother bought it because she told me that that was the only way the veterinarian was going to accept my cat, so I did things her way, and of course my cat hates it and refuses to go in. I don’t think I’m ever going to get her spayed.
I have a box closet for all my high end stuff. Photography and video equipment resell so much easier when you have it, the same goes for video game consoles.
I have a small recording studio and keep all the boxes for my gear. If anything ever stops working having the original box to ship it for repairs makes it so much easier. I have an entire closet that looks like I just lost a game of Tetris.
Ugh, my worst trait is keeping ALL original packaging. Phone boxes are whatever, they're small and the sticker has the model and IMEI, which might actually be useful.
Do I need the box for my giant Shark air filtration device? My rice cooker? Instant pot? Air fryer? The pot set I bought? FUCK NO. They're huge and take up a ludicrous amount of space. I've had a lot of those items for years and never once touched the box.
Listen... It may help sell it later (which I will mever do), and who knows if the store will want it for warranty (unlikely). But I still have the box just in case....
The fact that I no longer own the phone is irrelevant.
A couple of years ago at my parents house I found my old iPhone 3G that I’d given to my dad ages ago, in its original box. It no longer turned on but was in great condition having spent its entire life in a case with a screen protector. He had no use for it so I took it home with me.
I posted a pic of it on r/iPhone and some collector messaged me saying they were interested in buying it but only if it came with the original box. I made $50 because I kept the box.
I'm Gen-X...and I will fight you before I throw away that box!!
I have a special cabinet in the house that I keep a lot of boxes like this and it drives my GF crazy. She doesn't understand that 1 day I just might need that iPhone 5 box or the iPad box from 2017. There will surely come a time I need the original box for my xBox360...even though I no longer even have that xBox360.
I have all of my Apple boxes from my iPhone 4 and Mac mini 2011 and up. My iMac may never again come out of its original box but at least it’s safe in the garage!
I find them useful to use in drawers for organizing small items, but I don't keep the boxes just to have them take up space. I have one repurposed into a small sewing kit too!
Once I get rid of the phone, I get rid of the box. Unfortunately, between the four of us in this house, I have way too many white boxes piled up in my office closet.
Maybe cleaning my closet will be a Christmas break project.

If it’s something I can sell later I keep the box

Didn't know this was possible. When my Galaxy S3 no longer cut it, I just traded it to T-Mobile for a Galaxy A32.
I try to keep the boxes, as it'll come in handy when moving, but if not, I just clip the barcode and serial numbers for warranty.
techieveteran@reddit
Dang, the S3 was like 14 years ago! I had the Motorola Droid HD then

I don't know what Xennial needs to hear this, but throw away the box your cat came in.

You will never need it.

Fellow cancer survivor - glad to have you among the living. It beats the alternative.

You can thank this baby for helping bring me back.

Oooh a tortie! Beautiful. Doctors appointments are so stressful, finding a cat friend must have been pretty nice.

Now I'm worried for your cat. How else am I gonna take this screaming claw machine to the vet?!

I feel very called out by this. It feels so wrong throwing that highly engineered box away.

My gf keeps all her boxes.
I toss boxes.
She hates it, but then after a day of realizing we have functional closets and shelves, she realizes that keeping empty boxes is silly.
"What if we move?" has got to be the only question asked in the defense of keeping boxes, and it's a silly one. You'll use another box!
Goose80@reddit
I always keep my TV box. If I need to move it or sell it… it fits perfectly in there. Never found a better way to do it than that.
caramelpupcorn@reddit
I don't keep all of my boxes, but I do keep certain ones for smaller, weirdly shaped appliances that come in nice custom boxes for moving protection.
I've moved enough times to know the value of a custom box for certain items!

I only keep boxes if they're large enough for a pet to reside in. They tend to put themselves away if you leave enough boxes out.

Right? Resale value and demand goes up with the box, especially for Apple products.
