The elementary school used to serve the pizza in individual aluminum trays.. the cheese on the edges would get really crispy and delicious. It was probably frozen pizza but I had fond memories
None of my schools had trays like that where the food was served directly on it. The rectangular pizza in elementary school was always listed on the menu as "pizza in a box" because it came in individual boxes. None of the food was cooked at the school though, so that was probably part of it.
My mom was the lunch lady at my school and she'd sometimes order an extra case of them (and pay for it, too) so we'd have these at home. They were the perfect size!
When mom started back to work when I went to first grade she would get entire cases of Tony’s pizza to put in the freezer. It was that and otter pops all summer. I’m sure that’s considered neglect now
Pizza day was Friday in our cafeteria. It was always on the monthly menu as "Rich Cheesy Pizza" unless it was a pizza bagel or pizza boat (French bread).
There is a guy on YouTube that creates/cooks/bakes historical recipes, usually hundreds of years old. However, he did an episode last year where he goes through the 1980’s “school pizza” recipe from the government and goes over the ingredients/instructions and makes the pizza if anyone is interested. https://youtu.be/40MvjFaTVzE?si=cZBh12tt_kBrQiRl
Small world, that video came up on my recommendations, which lead me to a find a picture on Pintrest, which lead me to reminisce about the golden days and post here!
It really was a different time. School cooks actually cooked almost everything. I remember watching them roll out the dough for the giant trays of chicken pot pie they used to bake during kindergarten “snack time.” They were always doing prep for something when we went through the line for our milk and snack. My kids are 20 and 18 and it seems like 90% of what their schools served came premade and/or frozen and was just heated up in the oven, thrown in the fryer, or came in big bags that were heated in boiling pots/steamers.
our pizzas never looked that good (1st pic), usually looked like the second pic. also my school never gave us that many sides. we'd usually just get a roll and milk, or tots and milk.
It was a toss up between this and chili day. We got "cheese snacks" with the chili. It was really just half a buttered bun toasted with a slice of melted cheese on top, but damn was it good.
Our elementary school was actually almost crowded from parents joining in at lunch on wiener wrap day. It was a hot dog baked into a perfect soft roll, served with a dipping sauce that was essentially mayo and mustard. It was so popular that parents had to buy their lunch ticket in advance so that they would have enough extra. Their pizza was awesome too.
In my hometown, there was a local grocery store that sold the exact same pizza in their deli. I would walk down there and grab two or three slices on a weekend.
One day in the 90s I went over to a friend’s house to hang out. We took bong rips and played video games for a while and we started getting hungry and talking about what to eat. He goes “Hey you want some school pizza?” And pulls out a bag of like 10 slices from the freezer. I’m like how the fuck did you get all this school pizza?? Well we lived in a small town and our elementary school sold the extra leftover pizza to the grocery store, so like every Wednesday there was a new batch hitting the freezer lol.

As someone who grew up in a country that didn't have a school lunch program... this looks like prison food, what the hell?

We had pizza baskets which were just a basket of French fries with pizza on top. Also, milkshakes

I still think the hexagon Mecican pizza was the best.

Where's the cubed pepperoni?

This week is sausage or cheese pizza I guess. Cubed pepperoni was totally awesome though.

I love Tasting History, especially since I was a brown bag it kid and I really don't remember ever getting to try this in school

Same thing in most restaurants now too, it all comes in in a plastic bag and warmed up, it's been that way for a long long time too.

All the dorks in my school were dipping it in ranch but I, the obvious cool one, was dipping in French.
