Possibly divisive opinion poll: Were you ever or are you currently a fan of Dave Matthews Band?
Posted by SteveEcks@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 325 comments
I made one comment! I expressed a modicum of distaste for DMB and the comments calling me a hater... And watching the upvote/downvote roller coaster right in front of my face.
I can say I really liked the Live at Luther College acoustic album he did with Tim Reynolds. I saw him live once and... I didn't drink, I definitely smoked a lot, I remember it being fine. Most of the crowd seemed just obnoxiously drunk. I dunno. It was a great show to not have to pay for.
So let's have it: are you now, were you ever, or are you currently a fan of Dave Matthews Band?
SoloMotorcycleRider@reddit
No
SoSoOhWell@reddit
I was a fan up until having to sit through a 30 minute pan flute solo by someone he invited to play in the band. I wasn't the only person to walk out on that artistic choice. After that I slowly faded from listening to the band. Funny enough he was a headliner at a festival one of the nights I was at. I quickly realized why I stopped listening and going to DMB shows all those years earlier.
mydeadface@reddit
Didn't get the attraction. Same for match box 20 and the goo goo dolls.
YesHaveSome77@reddit
Total honesty, I couldn't actually tell ypu the name of a single DMB song. I'm sure I have heard one before, and could probably identify him as a singer, given the general knowledge of what his voice/style sounds like, but I have never purposely listened to or sought out a DMB song/album.
MyNameIsntFlower@reddit
I love them. I’ve seen them like 50+ times in concert. Saw the acoustic show he did with Tim Renyolds.
Idk, DMB was the defining music of my young adult life I guess.
veety@reddit
I hated DMB with the burning passion of an erupting volcano. One of my best friends in HS loved them and we would often bicker about it.
eatsleepdive@reddit
Like them or not, Carter Beauford is a ridiculously great drummer.
SteveEcks@reddit (OP)
ZERO arguments there. The musicians in the band are/were top notch. Beauford is great, no doubt.
EmmyNoetherRing@reddit
I was pretty neutral on their recorded stuff. But I got to see them live a few years ago and their improv on stage is incredible. Their songs should be thought of as jazz standards— the sort of generic bit with the lyrics takes up 20% of the performance, and the other 80% was guitars doing things to my brain I didn’t realize they could.
stinkyf00@reddit
I feel like a lot of the people in the band were/are that talented.
AmyGranite@reddit
Saw them 6 times before the bus bridge incident.
Jerkrollatex@reddit
I don't hate them but it's never really been my thing.
SomewhereLive5921@reddit
Love them. Their new stuff is generally uninspiring, with a few exceptions. Seen them many times and they always played their asses off. The first 3 albums are great, but they lost their way after that. I’m in Virginia a lot, and they’ve really done some great charity work in their hometown
jphistory@reddit
I was neutral on them until I dated a few guys who were huge fans and they both soured me on them forever by virtue of being the wooooorst.
the_kid1234@reddit
There was an insufferable twat in high school that brought his guitar everywhere and was always chunking away at DMB songs. I couldn’t stand them from that guy.
That being said the band is fantastic and I like the music but Dave’s voice/singing is the thing I don’t like. However, that all being said I have a soft spot for What Would You Say, Where Are You Going and Gravedigger.
In honor of your post, I’m going to listen to the first two albums today to see if I’ve changed my opinion 25 years later.
itsallcosmica@reddit
THEY SUCK SO MUCH
WiscoBrewDude@reddit
No, never. I also can't stand the rhcp
elroyonline@reddit
Saw them live in Melbourne many years ago. Immediately bought tickets to the next night. Still two of the best live bands I’ve ever seen - both shows were complete different. That said, haven’t really been into anything since Stand Up.
Ronthelodger@reddit
Some songs are good, some have nostalgic value, but I feel like it never fully clicked for me. I don’t doubt his musicianship.
aqiwpdhe@reddit
Yes I loved them. Still think everything through Before These Crowded Streets was awesome. Haven’t listened to any new albums in 15+ years.
nudave@reddit
I could have written this post, but I would have said everything through the Lillywhite Sessions. The switch from that to Busted Stuff was the beginning of my loss of interest.
amayain@reddit
Agreed although the Gru Grux album was pretty darn good too
FishermanNatural3986@reddit
They just played Before these crowded streets in full at a show this past year.
theloop82@reddit
Groo Grux king is an awesome album you should check it out
Lil_ah_stadium@reddit
I was a fan until I experienced them under the crowded streets of Chicago. Now I have a shitty opinion of then.
cicadabutt@reddit
redrosebeetle@reddit
I don't remember making this comment but here I am.....
WankAaron69@reddit
Same. Though I did entertain their albums until Stand Up (the fire dancer one), but that was it…20 years ago! I was a huge fan of the Tim Reynolds and the Listener Supported live albums. Those are my favorites.
lilacsmakemesneeze@reddit
Same. Loved their earlier music. Still know people obsessed with them and see them in concert every year.
ooooooootreyngers@reddit
Same boat. Before these Crowded Streets is an amazing album...I remember shortly after his tix started getting stupid expensive, but I could get into a Phish show for 30 bucks or less...so I stuck with my OGs...looking back i still feel like I made a good decision.
somainthewatersupply@reddit
I had my time where I absolutely loved them. I still appreciate a few of their albums, but rarely listen.
Loocha@reddit
Dated a girl that was a huge fan. I never was. Now hearing his music takes me right back to riding in her mustang.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Yes. I also now live near Charlottesville VA, where they originated. Dave has a home here.
OutrageForSale@reddit
I hated on them for a while. I used to have a rule “no Dave” when people would pick up my guitar. Yet I saw them twice in the late 90s.
Obviously they’re an amazing band, and some of the most talented musicians and songwriters of our time. I grew to love some of their songs, and enjoy when they’re at a festival.
scifithighs@reddit
I have never liked them and stand in solidarity with you, OP. I like to het high and fuck as much as anyone, but I'd rather listen to fun music when I do.
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
I didn't feel any certain way about DMB at all until I heard the central park concert version of All Along the Watchtower. I knew who they were, liked Crash in high school, but that performance of that one song in central park did things to me. I wish I could have seen it live.
Any_Constant_6550@reddit
They stopped coming to Hartford, CT because of the drunk/rowdiness of the crowd. They have a few good songs, kinda overrated imo.
SemperFudge123@reddit
One of my first concerts ever was DMB with Soul Coughing at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan back in 1996 and I've seen them live 7 or 8 times over the years.
I really enjoy all the albums up to Before These Crowded Streets and still listen to Under The Table and Dreaming and Crash from time to time. There were some good songs after Before These Crowded Streets but the albums weren't as consistently good and they got a bit too jam-band for my tastes.
The Live at Luther College album with Dave Matthew's and Tim Reynolds is still one of my favorite live acoustic sets out there.
DetroitsGoingToWin@reddit
Not a huge fan, but can enjoy DMB. Never saw him in concert.
RoyalPuzzleheaded259@reddit
I am not a fan. His band is phenomenally talented but if he would just stop singing and stick to rhythm guitar the group as a whole would be much better. My personal opinion is that Dave Matthews himself is the weakest link in that band.
Rob_Bligidy@reddit
I think Dave is one of the cheesiest front men of all time. Their musicality misses the mark for me. I also find the fans to be a tad obnoxious. They’re like the Christian rock kids of the jam band scene. And let’s Never Forget the poop incident in Chicago. Annnd I nearly forgot the horn player was a sexual predator.
KnicksTape2024@reddit
Loved them then, love them now.
StrategyOdd7170@reddit
Nope. Not a fan at all
masteroftatertots@reddit
I can't fucking stand them.
Treadingresin@reddit
Truly hate them. Got dragged to a concert once, terrible experience
I_like_flowers_@reddit
nope. not then, not now.
Treadingresin@reddit
Truly hate this band always and forever
SurlySuz@reddit
Same. Can’t stand his voice, can’t stand the music.
ReggaeForPresident@reddit
Voice absolutely kills any vibe for me
Zeke688@reddit
This is how I feel about Bono’s voice on most songs. To each their own.
very-regular-3@reddit
despite all the musicians he may or may not have influenced, I feel the same about Geddy Lee and Rush. That guys voice.... I just can't.
still can't, stand. (nevermind, that IFL les claypools' vocals, bass, strings & beat). each their own i guess right?
AgeNo9436@reddit
I concur.
The_best_is_yet@reddit
Same here!
caramelpupcorn@reddit
I too dislike his voice. It reminds me of a human man version of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch.
Tuffwith2Fs@reddit
That story about their tour bus dumping shit on unsuspecting people is about as metaphorically perfect as possible.
TheGirlwThePinkHair@reddit
I think I’d rather have human shit dumped on me than listen to their music.
ConfidenceFragrant80@reddit
Ily
GUSHandGO@reddit
Yep. Couldn't stand them from the beginning. Jam bands aren't my scene.
KingSpork@reddit
Could never understand the appeal. The music is cringe, his voice is weird in a bad way, and the vibe was douchey. (Just my opinion, don’t be mad reddit)
GirlCiteYourSources@reddit
Same. I could never understand the draw.
FineAunts@reddit
The drummer was good but yea, once Dave's voice came on I would lose all interest.
To me they are a fixture of the 90s I just never got into, like No Fear shirts and Celine Dion.
tafbee@reddit
Agreed.
JeffTS@reddit
I haven’t listened to any new albums in a long time. But I always enjoyed their earlier work.
YorkiesandSneakers@reddit
I find them to be pretentious and their fans are obnoxious, but they’ve got a couple of ear worms.
spookyhellkitten@reddit
I am fond of a lot of their earlier things but haven't listened to anything newer than maybe...2003? The first time my now ex husband deployed so much of my music listening was replaced with Hannah Montana or High School Musical just so my kid and I could have something to distract ourselves together, singing stupid songs into the broom and swiffer as microphones. I lost myself for a bit lol
I did make a burned CD for while I was giving birth and the kid was born to either Crush or Crash by DMB. So. That's a thing.
sweat-it-all-out@reddit
You couldn't escape it in college in the late 90s. I was a strange one though. I loved Before These Crowded Streets because it was a bit darker. That's the only CD of theirs that I still own.
liftkitten@reddit
Thought they were fine back in the day but wouldn’t have called myself a big fan or anything, like I think I had the albums but they weren’t in super heavy rotation. They give aging jam band vibes now, which isn’t my thing.
Johnnnybones@reddit
Carter Beauford is my fav musician of all time
SlimyPurpleMeteor@reddit
I enjoyed their first 3 albums. Caught them live at a music festival in 2001 and was thoroughly impressed.
My fandom sharply faded after they put out “Busted Stuff”. I know they were already commercially successful, but beginning with “Everyday”, it felt like the newer music was devoid of that creative spark that made their previous work something to behold.
siobhanenator@reddit
Have always and will probably always dislike them. Maybe they're talented and good performers, but that doesn't make the sounds they're making at all pleasant to listen to.
Feline_Fine3@reddit
Yes. There are definitely albums and songs that I like better than others. I particularly like the songwriting. Although I think my favorite is Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds’ album. It’s so good. I have seen them live a couple times, they are so entertaining.
Gloppydrop_@reddit
I still love them
AbbreviationsBorn276@reddit
Nope. Never was a fan.
gitismatt@reddit
"under the table and dreaming" and "crash" came out when I was finishing high school / starting college. huge arena tour that summer. I had my favorite songs, and was super excited to hear them live.
I was not yet wise to the ways of the jam band and didn't realize the whole concert would be like 5 songs at 30 minutes each. I only got to hear one of my favorites and the whole thing just really put me off from DMB. yes, I was naive to their style of music when playing live. fully admit that. but I also learned that I just dont like that style of music so I guess it was still a win for me
I did just hear one of those favorite songs on the radio while on a road trip and it was fun to sing along and remember that point in my life. but that's about all DMB is now - an anchor for memories from that point of my life
threefeetoffun-@reddit
No. They were always shit and I couldn’t stand their fans.
meltedchocolatepants@reddit
The guys who loved that band were the douchebag business major guys who thought they were deep by listening to it. They would frequently try to play guitar at house parties hoping to get laid.
PileofTerdFarts@reddit
God yes!! Frosted tips, fake tan, puka shell necklace, polo shirt, and a white hat with "Syracuse" or "Notre Dame" written on it. Lord... Im getting flashbacks to '96
gitismatt@reddit
as a frosted tips, fake tan, puka shell and polo shirt wearing guy from this era, HOW DARE YOU. I was too busy stealthily creeping on dudes to try to strum DMB to score a chick
threefeetoffun-@reddit
I am from Buffalo. Oh the Syracuse hats...
PileofTerdFarts@reddit
Buffalo eh? You pushed our shit in good today (Steeler fan). Congrats.
Josh Allen was too much for us.
LapOfLuxe@reddit
This is SO accurate! I had to sit through some terrible acoustic guitar played by these guys
ace_11235@reddit
Jokes on you, doing that definitely got us laid.
PileofTerdFarts@reddit
Yeah, well learning every Nirvana song on guitar got me laid, and I didnt have to become a douche.
threefeetoffun-@reddit
I was really good at Buffy trivia and that got me laid.
PileofTerdFarts@reddit
Shit boys... we have a winner. I concede to the master of Buffy.
I can only imagine the tsunami of muff you drowned in. Congrats, brother.
✊🏼Respect.
threefeetoffun-@reddit
Look I am shocked too but somehow that worked lol. Lost my virginity to a girl named Faith. Led with "Oh like the Buffy character"
Cow_Man42@reddit
As a construction worker that did Model UN and quiz bowl on PBS during high school, I can tell you it wasn't just Dbag business majors. I loved it then and still enjoy it.
SteveEcks@reddit (OP)
Can confirm. Learning the intro to Satellite got me... Places
PileofTerdFarts@reddit
Thank you!
threefeetoffun-@reddit
You're welcome. I couldn't have said it better myself.
Pale_Row1166@reddit
I dated a guy who was lowkey awful and one day dropped on me that he had seen DMB in concert over 30 times, and I was like, oh yes, it’s all coming together.
StreetCarp665@reddit
my thoughts on the music:
Miz_momo82@reddit
I fucking hate DMB
pizzabirthrite@reddit
They did their best work on a chicago bridge.
gitismatt@reddit
I just recently learned what this means when I was doing a kayak tour of the chicago river. had never heard that story before.
Admirable-Nothing642@reddit
Good lord, no... same goes for matt good band... 90% of the time I don't even remember they are 2 different bands unless mentioned side by side or I'm thinking about it
WasabiAficianado@reddit
Just that one song
Beetso@reddit
I've always hated them. Not my thing.
OkBaconBurger@reddit
Guy I worked with liked them a lot. I was familiar with some of the radio hits but that was it. I picked up Listener Supported and played it pretty much a whole 14 hour car drive. Still one of my favorite albums.
pirateofms@reddit
They were a 'select songs' kind of thing for me. Not my usual, but Gravedigger and the Red Rocks cover of All Along the Watchtower do it for me.
QuietNene@reddit
Nope. Always thought of them as high school/college New Kids on the Block: Music that girls liked for no really explicable reason, but that you sat through to spend time them.
I’m sure that they’re more talented than that. But I still don’t connect with them. Even by soft acoustic standards I find them pretty bland. Just mho.
Zeke688@reddit
I love DMB, but I’m into a lot of different types of music. In the 90s I was a closeted DMB fan. In my two groups of friends one listened to hip hop the other was like Metallica, Rage, Korn & Tool stuff. I only listened to Dave alone. I love the first 3 or four-ish albums and not much after. I can certainly understand why people don’t like Dave much.
stinkyf00@reddit
Oh yes. Very much so in the 90s and early 2000s. My now-husband and I went to a concert before we were together as a couple, and they played "Carsh", and it was like, SO significant to me at the time, lol.
RolandMT32@reddit
I don't get the hate for Dave Matthews Bsnd
Ok_Researcher_9796@reddit
They had one song I thought was Ok. But no, never really cared for them .
TheGirlwThePinkHair@reddit
Hell no, not now, not ever! I did like DM on that episode of House. That’s the nicest thing about him I have to say.
cnhn@reddit
I didn’t really think about them one way or another back in the day.
then I caught his tiny desk concert and realized that i do really enjoy them
GravityWorship@reddit
I grew up listening to and playing improvisational jazz. I thought DMB were talented musicians. Then I discovered that they didn't really "jam" and that it was all written down. Ruined the band for me.
Mememememememememine@reddit
I was a hard core fan as a young teenager. They were my first concert. I wanted a tattoo. I went every time they toured. Somewhere along the way I fell out of love and avoid them altogether.
nvmls@reddit
I am the biggest hater, not even sorry.
protossaccount@reddit
No.
The girl I had a crush on was into them though. We never even sort of dated, because I was a huge nerd and she was way out of my league, but for some reason I dislike them for that.
Shitty reason but it sounded xennial when I said it to myself.
Lord_Wicki@reddit
Not a fan, but not a hater. I accept them for who they are. If you want to hear my torture playlist, I'll share if inquired.
Equal_Question_4594@reddit
I just wonder why people who aren’t fans of DMB always feel compelled to make everyone aware of that fact… I don’t know non-fans of other bands that make it part of their personality or keep bringing it up or trying to stoke debate about whether folks like a band or not, except maybe those who aren’t fans of Taylor Swift (I say as a non-Swiftie lol). It’s a weird phenomenon I keep seeing with regard to DMB 🤔
otf_dyer_badass@reddit
Just went and saw them this summer after years of not seeing them. Still love them. I think I was turned onto them because my older brother was cool and liked them in high school. Little did I know they were all getting high listening to it lol 😂 it’s all starting to click now.
Atillion@reddit
It never caught on for me. I just don't like their music. Still don't.
guaztronaut@reddit
I can't make it through an entire album straight despite liking several songs on each. Some of those instrumental sections drag out too long. I'm not a jamband guy.
twistedevil@reddit
No, they sucked
GUSHandGO@reddit
Never been a fan. Just not into jam bands. But they're talented musicians.
desertdweller2011@reddit
i grew up in connecticut and that is my answer 😂 DMB was such a big part of the culture.
gwmccull@reddit
I don't think I gave them any thought in high school. I don't think they were popular in my area. Once I got to college and later, I just thought they were boring

DirtRight9309@reddit
i was a fan of DMB, but not a fan of the fans of DMB.
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
I like their music mixed in with other stuff from that time and style. Too much of it and I can get tired of the singer's voice. They have a GORGEOUS instrumental track I used to play to get my baby to sleep. It's something numbered, song 47 or something.
viceversa@reddit
DMB… pronounced “dumb” for a reason. Did not like the music, and liked the fans even less. ✌️
doorman666@reddit
Fuck no. They're horrendous. Talented, but make terrible, extremely cringe worthy music.
pnw_rider@reddit
My wife and I are big DMB fans and still listen to them often. We’ve been to 8 or so Gorge shows.
I don’t love most of their newer stuff, and realistically I know we like most of their music from high school/college when we were dating because it is super nostalgic.
That said, I can totally understand why people don’t like DMB or the whole culture around the band and touring.
ichthyomusa@reddit
Can you explain what's this about "the whole culture around the band and touring" and why are they polarizing?
I love them but as a casual fan, only ever needing Crash and Before These Crowded Streets, and i never looked much into them as a band.
Pale_Row1166@reddit
Shit on me once, shame on me. Shit on a whole boat full of tourists, shame on you.
No-Fox-1400@reddit
I am it a huge fan post Rick Rubin
Routine_Street_5674@reddit
They're super polarizing and some of their fans are insufferable, no doubt. I still love the early stuff.
ichthyomusa@reddit
I love them but tbh i only have Crash and Before These Crowded Streets. I feel that's all i really need from them, and they're 1000% satisfying albums and endlessly replayable (tho of course depends on the mood, as with all music).
I like The Space Between but never gave the album (Everyday) enough full listens.
DMB is a love them or hate them band and that's okay.
impliedapathy@reddit
I used to go every year to a 2 day DMB concert. Go to the first night’s concert, go camping, meet some friendly people, smoke, eat, sleep, do it again the next day. Did that for 4 straight years. Then it got more expensive than I was willing to pay. Kind of fell off after that tbh.
al_brownie@reddit
A little, the first couple of albums and saw them once maybe around 2004-ish. Not really since to be honest. I have a friend that’s a massive fan and travels to see them several times a year.
pbellyup@reddit
I didn’t care for them. At least at my high school, Dave Matthews was associated with the wealthy, popular crowd. Even in our yearbook, DMB was called out as a memory for our graduation year.
seminarysmooth@reddit
I didn’t hate DMB but I hated how overplayed he got. It went from my high school buddy saying ‘hey, check out these two new bands: Dave Mathew’s and Blues Traveller’ to every goddamn college party, hang out, get together, wake, pre-game, post game, shindig hootanannie ‘put on some music, how about DMB?’
sploogeoisie@reddit
It's inoffensive background party noise. Pretty good vibe but doesn't take up a lot of space and allows folks to socialize. Same thing with U2 only I'd actually put a Dave song on intentionally if the mood struck.
ace_11235@reddit
I will 100% listen to DMB or Blues Traveller
FionaGoodeEnough@reddit
Casually. I have always liked the singles, I have never listened to the albums, and I would attend a show if invited by a friend, but would not seek one out. And I have some feelings about Crash Into Me because it was a good makeout song that was very big when I met my first boyfriend.
Constant_Concert_936@reddit
I was told in college (early 00’s) there are two kinds of people: Dave Matthews fans and Kid Rock fans.
So… I’ll just say…yeah, I listen to DM. Now.
Big_Somewhere9230@reddit
No, I grew up in Noblesville IN and they still come every summer for multiple shows from what I can tell. It was such a big thing in HS and I never wanted to be associated with it.
SomeoneHereIsMissing@reddit
When I heard Before These Crowded Streets, I found them good. I bought some previous albums (Crash and Under The Table And Dreaming) and became a fan. I bought Everyday when it came out and found it bad. I went to see them for the Everyday tour and found them boring on stage, like they were playing for themselves. I stopped being a fan. I listen to their albums once every few years because I have them.
DoctorFenix@reddit
Like a lot of 14-16 year olds when Under The Table and Dreaming, and Crash, were released… I owned the records.
But I never managed to see the band in their early years of massive popularity, and by 18 his douchey fratboy fanbase made me not want to.

Yes, musical geniuses. Carter Beauford is hands down top 3 drummers of all time. Great jam band, their Live at Central Park album is the best. However, they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, which is okay. No hate if you don’t like them just know that you’re not cool 😉🤣

Cow_Man42@reddit
I remember buying Before these Crowded Streets the day it dropped. I was a big fan. I tried to like it so hard that I came to listen to it grudgingly. The stuff before was awesome. I used to drive to the city and wait overnight in line for tickets and then scalp them to my small town. I sold probably a couple hundred DMB tickets over a few years in highschool. There were a few times that most of my teachers were all in one section pretending that they didn't see us drinking/smoking during the concerts. It was some of the best times of my rowdy youth. So yea, still love them. Everytime a pre '98 DMB hits on my playlist, I am transported to better times and leave this shit that is the 21st century behind.
William_Shaftner@reddit
I remember as a freshman in college my buddy got the Crash album as a gift from his mom. We thought it was so lame and made so much fun of it.
For fun we put it in the 5 disc CD changer and just kinda ignored it. And then one day on ramdom it started playing "Drive in, Drive out."
I'm personally a drummer and a big fan of drums, poly rhythms, all that nerd geeky shit. Like I love Tool for that reason. When the outro on that song came up I was stopped dead in my tracks. Mesmerized.
Anyway since that moment I've dabbled in DMB and totally respect the musicianship. Especially Carter Beuford.
jar349@reddit
“THAT?! was bad as shit!”
frenchinhalerbought@reddit
Probably one of the best bands talent wise from every member top to bottom.
christhomasburns@reddit
Except for Dave himself. He is the definition of talentless hack. Its why every high school kid who gets a guitar learned Crash before anything else.
frenchinhalerbought@reddit
Do, do you think Crash is the only song he plays?
ooooooootreyngers@reddit
The Phish from Vermont enters the chat lol
rueggy@reddit
Always felt remorse I didn't see them live before they hit big. I remember in college at UVA seeing flyers up for "Dave Matthews Band at Trax" for like a $10 cover. That was '92 or '93.
Didn't know they were still making new stuff. I checked out after the third album and now I see they've made 10.
panteragstk@reddit
There are very few bands I hate more than Dave Matthews Band.
Babyspiker@reddit
Nah. Their first hit had a new sound and it was fun.
Then every other song sounded the same. Quickly jumped the shark. Really hard to listen to these days without laughing and cringing.
Routine_Street_5674@reddit
They don't sound any more the same than pretty much any band. What band doesn't have a 'sound'? Not sure what makes it hard to listen to - they have made some great music. The stuff later in their career (post... I don't know, 2005) is not my taste, but the early stuff is still amazing.
christhomasburns@reddit
Dave playing scales and calling it a solo while he drunkenly slurs in falsetto is why.
ace_11235@reddit
Which song would that be? Dave is a rhythm guitarist, so he would not be playing ANY solos. As a player, his music is some of the most difficult, intricate music to play, let along sing with.
Routine_Street_5674@reddit
These people have no idea what they’re talking about. I also play multiple instruments. I doubt these people do - or they haven’t listened to pretty much any song of theirs.
Routine_Street_5674@reddit
What are you even talking about? Can you give me a song as an example?
Babyspiker@reddit
Guy sounds like Adam Sandler doing an impression of Eddie Vedder’s lyrics. Hey let’s throw in another violin solo. Repeat.
It was quirky at first until you realized that was actually the entirely of his repertoire. Not it just sounds like Billy Madison.
Routine_Street_5674@reddit
You mention Eddie Vedder - another distinct voice and distinct sound. Their songs are all easily recognizable as theirs - they have their sound.
Totally get that at times his voice is ridiculous, but a lot of the time it's not. It's just normal singing. And they had a violin player, so of course they have some songs with solos. Many of them don't.
There's nothing 'quirky' about it. They have one of the best drummers of our generation - easily. They have pretty complex lines on guitar. They've brought in other talented musicians like Alannis Morrisette and Bela Fleck.
Anyway, I'm not here to convince you. You clearly have not actually listened to much of Dave Matthews or have your opinion formed. Plenty of music out there to enjoy.
Babyspiker@reddit
Distinct voice and distinct sound are not linked. You can put on any DMB album up through mid-2000 and they all sound the same.
Pearl Jam has a very distinct album to album sound difference. Eddie also did a bunch of collaboration outside of Pearl Jam. Chris Cornell showed him how NOT to just rely on an interesting voice.
Routine_Street_5674@reddit
They don’t sound any more the same than Pearl Jam. I’m a fan of both.
Some artists literally have the same chord changes and rhythm patterns. Jack Johnson comes to mind.
Some artists pretty radically change their sound. Radiohead went from Brit rock to electronica for example.
Pearl Jam and Dave both do not use the same chord patterns from song to song, have distinct rhythms. You think cry freedom sounds like best of what’s around? #41 sounds like two step?
It’s so clear to me that you have not listened to them in any real way, which is fine. Again, I’m not here to convince you to listen, but what you’re saying is just not true.
codebygloom@reddit
Not a fan, not a hater either. I don't think I've ever gone out of my way to listen to them, but I've also never gone out of my way to not listen to them either.
3OsInGooose@reddit
Loved DMB at the end of middle school - went to a show locally on the tour for the Crash album and was… super disappointed. They have a reputation as being great live when they care about the show and also barely even mailing it in when they don’t, and this was one where they definitely didn’t.
Didn’t dump them immediately, but that was definitely the start of my decline in listening to them. Haven’t listened to anything new since like 2005

I'm a big fan but nowhere near as big of a fan as I was when I was in my teens and 20s in the 90s/2000s.. I have, at one point, had just about every album and bootleg out there.. one of my dreams growing up in LA was to see Dave and Tom at Red Rocks. What really blows is that I now live about 20 minutes from Red Rocks and Dave has said he'll never play there again.

I was a DMB fan in a huge way until around 2001/2002. They were local to where I grew up so we were introduced to them early by older siblings who had bootleg tapes of their shows at local college parties. It was kinda local boys made good. Unfortunately, their whole sound changed in the early 2000s. One of them died, one lost a child, one was kicked out, Dave moved off to Seattle and started focusing on more solo material. The bouncy, fun, good times music of the early albums shifted to a darker and edgier tone. Time marched on and we all got older and as that happened I stopped listening to their newer music.
sweetbirthdaybaby333@reddit
Oh god I hate them. Like, an unfair, inordinate amount. Like I have bottled up everything about high school that gave me bad vibes (e.g., Abercrombie polos, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, everyone suddenly wearing hiker clothing in 1995, the rich kids with brand-new Jeeps, this one dude who got really mad that he couldn't use "hike up your skirt and show your world to me" as his senior quote, etc.) and pinned it on Dave Matthews Band.
I'm sorry, maybe they're nice guys, I don't know. I just know I will always and forever recoil and change the station when they come on the radio.
vinniegutz@reddit
Nope, but I had to accept their dominance. They're amazing at what they do, it's just not for me.

For a while in the mid to late ‘90s I was a fan. I liked the first couple albums enough, went to a couple of concerts one summer, the Tim Reynolds album was everywhere, his show on campus at Mizzou was a major event, but by 2001 or so I was done listening to them. Space Between was the song that made me stop. It’s not that I hate the music, but I have zero desire to listen to it. It’s not on any of my playlists. It’s music of a past time and place for me.

I can't say I've listened to DMB a whole lot in the last couple decades though. I might listen to a couple older songs on Spotify every so often, but that's about it really. I'm just not as into DMB like I used to be.

Yeah, I loved the first few albums, I haven't heard any more recent stuff. I've found they're one of those bands whose best songs are buried on albums. If people are mainly going by their hits I can see why they would think they're boring or annoying. They're a lot more varied and musically complex and emotional than you would think based on Crash Into Me or Ants Marching.
djsynrgy@reddit
Impressed by some of the musicianship. The band is.. Fine?
But, just personally, mostly hard-pass, anyway. And it's actually not because of the insufferable zombie-nation of fans, but because I kinda took umbrage (not earnestly; just tongue-in-cheek,) with that whole "we're rock but we're exclusively acoustic" corner of '90s pop. Rock bands can play acoustically (as an exception to the rule,) but the rule is that acoustic bands don't/aren't rock.
"It's science." /s

I really liked Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and they are still really popular here. For years, every summer they played at an outdoor amphitheater in WA called the Gorge. This past August, they had a 2 or 3 day concert there.

Huge fan. Still listen to them from time to time. However…I saw them live in Los Angeles in 2004 or 2005, and they were horrid. Nothing about the show was good. Bad set, bad performance, crap crowd, crap venue.

I think Crash is a brilliant album, period. I happened to be working a drink stand at a show in like 1996 when it had come out and it was a great show. Not my normal thing but they were good.
Now Dave and Tim Reynolds, I'm a huge fan of them doing their thing. Live at Luther College and the VH1 Storytellers show are incredible.
Helo7606@reddit

Capn26@reddit
Situationally.
I liked a few songs up to before these crowded streets. I still enjoy them. Never seen him live, don’t care to. I have some GREAT memories of a room full of guys singing crash one spring break, and some other similar nights listening.
There’s also some unbearable and pretentious fans that make the whole thing a little off to me. I don’t find him, his almost Tom Hanks looking head or the lyrics in anyway an existential experience. It’s fine.
OrangeAugust@reddit
I like individual songs of theirs, but I wouldn’t call myself a fan

Big Dave Matthews fan and surprised nobody is talking about Listener Supported or Live at Luther College (technically not DMB), some of the early albums that got me into loving live music.

I lived with a guy in the dorms, he was madly in love with this girl in our friend circle, who wouldn't give him the time of day. She had a lot of dude friends who this guy would get jealous of.
Basically someone would get "too flirty" with her, or god forbid, she brought a guy, and my roommate would go into our room, drink ciders by himself and play fuckin' DMB at ridiculous levels. We used to say it was to hide his crying.
Weird guy, soured me on the band forever.

Chemtrails_in_my_VD@reddit
I hated dmb growing up based on the radio singles. I was a alt/grunge kid when they came out, and it represented the corny adult contemporary side of 90's alternative to me. They might as well have been Gin Blossoms or Goo Goo Dolls.
But I ended up seeing them in 2008, and it was pretty amazing. You would be hard pressed to pick a band that puts more talent on one stage. I ended up diving deeper into the material and became a fan. Before These Crowded Streets is a legit masterpiece.
Withnail_I_am_I_am@reddit
I can't say that I ever was, but I remember I was on a trip from Las Vegas to Reno with my two brothers to go snowboarding. DMB came on the radio, their most famous song, and they thought it was hilarious that I seemingly ignored the song until I suddenly sang "I'm the King of the Castle, you're the dirty rascal--crash into me." exactly at the moment that Dave Matthews did. I had been brainwashed by that song.
ImmaculateGritty@reddit
Never. Felt like an actual statistical minority in my high school to have not attended a DMB show. And was fine with that, because I could not be less interested in them.

I like a lot of their stuff, but never understood why Crash got the most radio time of all of their songs, it is one of their most meh songs imo. Reminded me of Drive being the Incubus song that was all over the place when it was easily a bottom 2-3 song on that album.

Nope, not at all... Your distaste for DMB is fine with me, and Im perfectly ready for a shitstorm of downvotes.
But to me, DMB is in the same bin as Hootie and Spice Girls: shitty pop-garbage. And I dont say this to be mean, or cast aspersions on anyone here who may enjoy Dave Matthews, ok? different strokes and all. But in MY experience, everyone I knew back in the 90s who liked DMB were folks with horrid taste in music, or kind of the "poser" type who just gravitated towards whatever they were told was "cool" in the culture at large.
Very much poser types were into DMB, (whom they would annoyingly refer to as "Dave" as if they knew him \~ i.e. "Me and Chrissy went to see Dave, it was amaaaazing")
All my friends were into Sublime, No Doubt, Green Day, Blink, Nirvana, Radiohead, even Marilyn Manson. But nobody I voluntarily spent time with were fans of "Dave"... everyone in my whole extended squad of friends and acquaintances pretty much considered it sellout pop garbage. But then again, we were all punks, stoners, and burnouts. So perhaps Im the wrong person to ask. Interestingly, however, most of us turned out allright... My one buddy even got in early on the Bitcoin and he's a bazillionaire now. And he used to buy dimebags from me.

I never really got into DMB when I was in high school, but they've grown on my as I've gotten older. I've never been to a concert and I don't particularly care for Phish! :-D
That being said, I find myself listening to their music more often these days. I honestly can't explain it, but I don't think I need to. I just enjoy their tunes and play style. It's so uniquely them, and I respect that a lot.

Hated at first due to overplaying radio hits, then grew to accept their popularity in my college years - it was unavoidable. Went to a concert once and my college age crew seemed to be surrounded by younger kids. The show was good but scene was weird. After that I kinda got sick of DMB studio albums, but discovered Dave's earlier era and gained a new appreciation for his musicianship. And of course, the Luther release is top notch. Live from Red Rocks is also amazing - a hall of fame level live album.
In other words, it's complicated. Their success is well deserved but I don't listen to it now. And I can see why people don't like them.

Yes, I was a fan early on despite not fitting into the demographic that was associated with them. They made several albums that have absolutely stood the test of time.
