The next generation is enjoying the classics

At Grandma's house for Thanksgiving, the youngest generation is discovering (and loving) the Fisher Price garage and die cast character cars.

Yep. My son plays with this at my parent’s place. I used to play with it at my grandparents house with my cousins. My mom has found additional figurines and vehicles to go with it at garage sales. Good memories!

This was one of my first Christmas presents

I can still hear that crazy loud elevator bell.
Low_Telephone5898@reddit
that sound was like a siren call for chaos
Tasty_Persimmon3803@reddit
that bell was like a whole concert in a toy garage

It’s interesting, I didn’t recognize this toy until I spotted the clear elevator compartment, and then this very old and childlike feeling washed over me as I remembered that part of it and how I used to fixate on it. I don’t remember the character cars at all though.

I ordered this for my oldest daughter 2-3 years ago and it came with matching cars for each parking spot (blue, red, yellow and green) + four wooden Little People. Her younger sister will be introduced in the next year once she's a little older/past the phase of putting things in her mouth.

Technically it came with Fisher Price Little People (OG peg style) people and cars. The character cars are a separate piece of Xennial nostalgia. My cousins and I always played with them together though.
its_raining_scotch@reddit
Oh ok, the peg people sound familiar.

One of my grandmas had this Fisher Price parking garage growing up and I played with it all the time using Hot Wheels.
Fast forward to my daughter being a toddler - I fell back into Fisher Price and Little Golden Books. I ordered this very parking garage and it is currently in her bedroom along with the Fisher Price schoolhouse, houseboat, firehouse and around 30 Little People (and their accessories).
We also have the classic Fisher Price record player and camera. These toys were absolutely built to last and I love that my daughter loves them (all the Little People are named after herself and those closest to her).

I don’t remember this one. I did have the Fisher Price Little People heliport.

If only parking garages were this much fun in real life.
Emotional_Bonus_934@reddit
I got mine for Christmas at 5. Second only to the ferris wheel

This thing was the shit. Tag yourself - I'm the goldfish pond
Imaginary-Mix-5726@reddit (OP)
The spinning car display, obviously.
lifeat24fps@reddit
It's incredible how well made those toys were.
Imaginary-Mix-5726@reddit (OP)
I feel a little sad because I can't think of anything that's a generational toy like this for the current set of kids. There are so many more toys these days, so much variety, and so much poorly made or faddish. Nothing widespread enough to connect culturally about when they reach our age.
PMichaelB89@reddit
Played with this at my grandparents house. This and Lincoln Logs.
Imaginary-Mix-5726@reddit (OP)
This is, in fact, very same toy that I played with at my grandparents' house.
Accadius@reddit
Nobody I know has those anymore but I was surprised to see my 3yo Niece playing with the fisher price little people school bus. I didn’t even know that thing survived all these years.

Is that the car wash with the brushes n soap ?!? What was it called when we had it growing up ?? Need a pic fam. My life depends upon it. 🥶🥶
Imaginary-Mix-5726@reddit (OP)
No, but it does have a mechanic pit and a goldfish pond.
Head-Studio2727@reddit
Just checked think it was matchbox car wash ?!?
goat_penis_souffle@reddit
With the “spin dry” that would usually just fling the car.
Head-Studio2727@reddit
Haha 😆 exactly didn’t quite work like in that loud outrageous ad 🫡🫡
Head-Studio2727@reddit
Late 80s early 90s I think 🤔

What a great era it was to be a kid I miss it sometimes 🗿

Hmm maybe I’ll check online. Thx 🙏

I remember having one when I was really young. Then I remember using it for target practice with a pellet gun when I was in my early teens.
Agreeable_Mouse6000@reddit
I remember using the Muppet Babies happy meal cars with this set
Old-Explanation9430@reddit
My favorite
tealccart@reddit
I absolutely loved the hot wheels version of this

Memory unlocked 🔓
I had that garage and that Count car
Imaginary-Mix-5726@reddit (OP)
The Count Car was my personal favorite.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
So disappointed to learn there’s been so few car elevators in my life
(Not really, because large garages already suck. But still)
Intelligent_Pass2540@reddit
My son who is 9 also has autism....is fixated on elevators right now. When he saw a toy car elevator he lost it and has asked to see one in real life repeatedly.
