What this is, is a pilot burning useless hours to get to the magical “1500” they need to get hired by an airline. Which is why I stand behind my statement that the 1500hr rule is dumb and pointless and doesn’t make anyone any safer.
Allaplgy@reddit
Honestly, why?
If this was that, which isn't, it's hours in the sky, doing somewhat complex maneuvers. Builds confidence and experience. And you don't want one of those without the other.
SimilarTranslator264@reddit
So…..how did anyone ever survive when the requirement was 500?
So you honestly think someone with 1250 hours in a 172, doing 1000+hrs of that with a students flying a traffic pattern at a local non towered airport is a giant help with flying a bus? Sorry but it won’t? The only people that love the rule are the flight schools, and pilots that are already hired that now feel more important even though they didn’t have these hurdles. And the politicians that pushed for it so it can give the illusion of “safety”.
Allaplgy@reddit
How did anyone survive before vaccines and antibiotics?
What is your perfect number?
SimilarTranslator264@reddit
Well experience matters, but it needs to be USEFUL experience. As a CFI you get the same hour 1000 times doing the same pattern work over and over. 95% of the time you only fly when the weather is good. You go to the same airports over and over, it’s useless. It’s like training to be a salvage diver and your only experience is your pool at home. But hey you have 2000 successful dives in your log book so you are good to go right?
Allaplgy@reddit
As a commercial pilot, most of your days are going to be spent flying the same airports and routes over and over again. The ability to focus through the monotony is an important part of it.
SimilarTranslator264@reddit
In a piston single on sunny days to the smallest airports?
Allaplgy@reddit
So one that arguably requires more attention than a 'bus that basically flies itself under many routine conditions?
I'm not a pilot myself, but I know enough about flying to know that piloting a single engine Cessna requires a bunch of focus between keeping up with engine temps, mixture, atmospheric conditions, etc.
And if you spend 1500 hours doing basic vfr flight in perfect weather just to reach the requirement, that's on you. Log more interesting and challenging hours.
SimilarTranslator264@reddit
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I flew 6hrs this weekend in a plane slightly more complex than a 172 and spent most of my time changing XM channels and trying to find the end of the internet. Oh and listening to people ask the OSU/Michigan score on guard.
Allaplgy@reddit
What do you think commercial pilots do?
Again, if you feel you are wasting time flying simple plans, do something else. Challenge yourself a bit. You have more than enough hours under your belt to fly something else besides a 172.
I think we are dealing with the exact thing I was talking about when I said it's bad to have confidence without experience.
SimilarTranslator264@reddit
I know what they do, guy that owns the hanger next to me flys for UPS and said he gets to 500’ and plays on his phone. Another flys for Fly Exclusive and he plays on the internet, another is with Skywest and he watches movies about gladiators, I text when I have service and play games.
Obviously you think 1000hrs of bullshit flying after the initial 500 is very important but it has nothing to do with the job you are working toward. Woman who was in the sim with a friend when he did his sim check for NetJets was a 2000+ hr military helicopter pilot. She bombed the check because she got behind the plane. Not saying she’s a bad pilot but the experience she had didn’t help her fly the XLS. But I’m sure if she had 1000 in a Piper warrior or some tailwheel time in a champ she would have aced it.
Allaplgy@reddit
You are the poster child for why things like this exist, hotshot. You think you know it all with relatively little experience.
Again, of you are bored, find more interesting reasons to fly. And if you are bored flying these uneventful plans, you will claw your eyes out as an airline pilot, where "uneventful" is the ultimate goal.
Princie99@reddit
Are you kidding ??? What the **** are you talking about man ? You are a biggest looser i ever seen in my life ! You was doing PIPI in your pampers when i was beating players much more stronger then you! How can a pilot get bored, can't he just takeoff to another city/country?
PenHistorical@reddit
as per Isgrimnur's post above
He had been tasked with running in a new engine by flying at a particular power setting for two hours in preparation for the plane to be bought online as an instructional aircraft.
1Rab@reddit
"Fly this plane to make sure this engine won't kill people."
dubvee16@reddit
No. That particular per setting is the important part. It's part of a new engine break in.
kernpanic@reddit
This is in southern Australia. The nearest capital city is almost a day away in a typical light training plane. The nearest country isnt practically reachable. (Nz).
SoothedSnakePlant@reddit
From the area around Adelaide, Indonesia might actually be closer and that's very doable for light aircraft.
kernpanic@reddit
You're right. Parafield to Kiman in png is around 18 hours if you keep your fuel stops to a minimum in a 172.

Icy-Database2590@reddit
Doesn't happen often, but I get a real kick out of seeing the city I live in pop up on a random sub for some weird reason.
K2step70@reddit
How can pilots be this precise? Do they see their flight path on the radar? Qantas just drew a Kangaroo off the coast of Australia within the last few weeks.
ywgflyer@reddit
They design these routes before the flight and load the whole thing into the aircraft, then file it with ATC and fly it. It's not generally done "on the fly".
Phoenixmaster1571@reddit
ATC, after receiving a hairy penis flight path with realistic veins: "Cleared as filed." *Sigh
ArbitraryMeritocracy@reddit
Don't you file flight plans with the FAA?
-Badger3-@reddit
Not if I’m just flying around my home airport.
swaggler@reddit
Flight plans are filed with AirServices Australia. Example.
ArbitraryMeritocracy@reddit
So right, there is a main office before you can even fuel up before flying penises with the Air Traffic Controller on the radar.
agarwaen117@reddit
Atc are FAA, though.
swaggler@reddit
In Australia, a separate organisation to the regulator manages ATC.
ArbitraryMeritocracy@reddit
Not exactly, I mean I only went to school for radar ATC and while I never had to approve flight plans in school I was friends with someone going to school for FAA flight plans approval and asked her a bunch of questions about her job.
You file with the FAA for approval and ATC helps you get where you need to go based on your flight plans.
This was a long time ago so I can be wrong about how it works today.
agarwaen117@reddit
ATC are FAA Employees, regardless of who does what job…
GARGLE_MY_GOLF_BALLS@reddit
On contract towers and military bases it ain't the FAA cutting their checks.
ArbitraryMeritocracy@reddit
While you have a point there is huge distinction beyond the admin desk jobs that get you approved for flight plans (FAA) and the people who make it possible to get you on your correct heading without collisions (ATC).
cmdr-William-Riker@reddit
Depends if he's flying VFR or IFR. If it's VFR you can do whatever you want I'm Class G. According to the article he was running an engine in, so that's probably what he was doing and needed to extend the return leg to get the engine hours they were looking for.
kernpanic@reddit
This is all class g, except for the class d airport at the start finish.
itsreallyatruestory@reddit
If you’re VFR in Class E and traffic isn’t around, then he could do this on his own. I’ve known pilots to clear an area then use breadcrumbs on a program like ForeFlight to do something like this. Filing it just ensures you probably won’t be disrupted.
Pr0v333333@reddit
This is wrong. It is 100% done on the fly. Flying VFR there are no flight plans you can do/go pretty much anywhere you want at any time in the flight.
K2step70@reddit
Thank you!
