I know the later sequels aren't as praised as the first two films but I love them all.
Rocky IV is drenched in "'Murica!" propaganda and is strung together by music videos. But it works. I love the story of Rocky going back to basics in a harsh climate he's not familiar with to beat a literal Russian superman that is backed by technology. It may be very basic of me but I find the story and the soundtrack inspiring. I have several tracks from this film on my workout playlist.
Fun fact: Though the minimum weight for a heavyweight boxer is 200 lbs, for dramatic purposes, Stallone weighed around 160 lbs while filming III and IV. He wanted his opponents to look like massive threats Rocky had to overcome.
Summiting at dusk with some average 80s cold weather gear with just regular old boots on and no supplies. Anybody else would have got lost AF and froze their nuts off, but not Rocky. He's back for dinner. Merica.
I will die on the hill that this is the most underrated Rocky. Also, I just realized this is probably when my thing for beards started. Husband is contractually obligated to keep his.
Another film that I can retroactively ask “If this is your first film to watch from the series, how does it change your perception of the film?” There were quite a few film series where I didn’t start at the beginning because of first catching the latest film at theater. For Rocky, starting at IV probably didn’t hurt that much, particularly with the starting recap of the final fight from III and the flashback montage of Apollo.
Starting the Alien series from Alien^3 on the other hand… Killing key characters offscreen doesn’t matter as much if you don’t know who those characters are.
I haven't seen it but the cinematography holds up really well in this clip. The only thing that's dated is the tech and styles (of course). Now I'm gonna watch it, impressive work with the lighting and cameras.
I always enjoy seeing the decades change over the different Rocky movies, becoming more 80's-like with every new movie and peaking with the 4th one. (There is no 5th one btw).
I think Rocky III was my favorite as a kid, because it had Hulk Hogan and Mr T lol..

Still one of the best gym soundtracks - I listen to it often

im_THIS_guy@reddit
It's not even a movie, though. It's just an anti-communism ad during the height of the Cold war.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Yes.
theelephantupstream@reddit
Rocky IV contains multitudes dammit!
im_THIS_guy@reddit
It ends with Rocky telling the communist Russian audience that it's not too late for them to change. LOL
palmerry@reddit
And then everyone clapped
theelephantupstream@reddit
I mean, it is admittedly 100% cheeseball American exceptionalism propaganda. It is also a masterpiece. The universe is rife with contradictions.
Leather_Addition2605@reddit
Who underrates Rocky IV? It’s clearly the best one. I’ll only counter argument I’ll even entertain is the first one.
Bulky_Goat_9624@reddit
My mom and I wore this soundtrack out on a long roadtrip. What a great movie and ST. You know it’s a good one when there’s multiple training montages
Cubelock@reddit (OP)
Rocky, Karate Kid, Bloodsport... 1980's movies had the best hype montages in history!
fading_relevancy@reddit
Bloodsport was definitely the most epic to me as a kid.

I sometimes wonder if, while making this movie, Sylvester Stallone ever called to Dolph Lundgren, "Hey, Dolph..."
And maybe he responded, "Did you just call me Adolph?"
That would have been funny.
Important_silence@reddit
Rocky IV is the best Rocky. I can’t watch any of the Rocky movies past IV.

If made today, Rocky IV would've ended with Rock throwing in the towel during the Apollo-Drago fight lmao.
