Continuing the name post, what was the most unusual name from your childhood?

I had a friend in elementary school named Valjean, I thought it was so unusual and the prettiest name I'd ever heard. It wasn't until jr. high that I saw Les Miserables and realized it was famous. š

Conyers.
To this day I donāt understand how a personās first name sounded like it should the last of a family who is a boring as white toast.

Ricardoberto ... it's like his parents couldn't settle between Ricardo and Roberto and said fuck it.. mashup!

Girl in my class was named Shasta, like the soda.
drklib@reddit
It is also a volcano (albeit a dormant one) in the Cascades.
Celistar99@reddit
My friend's ex wife's name was Shasta. I always thought it was such a cool name.
Chemical-Flan-5700@reddit
Did she have a sister Shauna?
JennJoy77@reddit
No, she did have a sister but her name was Megan if I recall correctly.
mrossm@reddit
Had a kid in elementary named Ramsey/Ramsay. Dumbass me had never heard this name before and had no context so I spent several years thinking he was named Ramses like the Egyptian Pharaoh
Persis-@reddit
I knew a little girl that my mom briefly watched. I thought her name was Murray. Which wasnāt a common name for a girl, but whatever. I kid you not, I only realized a few years ago that her name was actually Marie. I just heard it wrong as a kid. And once I decided it was Murray, thatās all I heard.
skeletonclock@reddit
That is adorable
TiKi_Effect@reddit
Mine. I donāt want to say it because there are less than 20 of us in the US lol.
Persis-@reddit
Thatās how I feel about my maiden name. Spelling variations exist, and thereās even a famous person with a variation. But the only people with our spelling are my brother and his daughter, my other brotherās son (brother deceased), my sister, and my aunt. Thatās it.
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit (OP)
Wow. I've only run into one other me in my life (spelled differently), but social security ranks it around 5k in the US. I hated it when I was little because it sounded like a boy's name to me, but I really started to appreciate a an adult.
TheWorldIsNotOkay@reddit
In high school I knew a Breezy (not a nickname), two Tequilas, a Brandy (named after the liquor according to her father), and fraternal twin siblings named Robin and Robyn Hood.
Persis-@reddit
I knew of a Breezy. I knew his MIL through my grandmother. But the name stuck in my head as a kid. I donāt actually know if it was a nickname or not, I just know he was never called anything else.
I also knew a man named Boots, but Iām pretty sure that one was a nickname.
Middleage_dad@reddit
I just remembered I knew a young kid named āDespeā which was short formāDesperadoā, her moms favored songĀ
bahaki@reddit
I knew a Breezy as well. Nice girl.
Logical_Two5639@reddit
just like the movie!
exqvisitely@reddit
We had a Breeze at my school! We also had Clover, Cinnamon, and Bambi. I'm sure there's more but my memory isn't serving me well right now.
Indubitalist@reddit
Just how rednecky of an area did you grow up in to have that many liquor names?
probablyatargaryen@reddit
I grew in the hood and there were soooo many of them. No idea why but poor people love naming kids after vices and cars we canāt afford
Indubitalist@reddit
I am related to someone named after the car she was conceived in. The mother refuses to acknowledge this now and has made up an alternate explanation she freely tells people but she definitely told us all back when she was pregnant that it was the car that the child was named after.
probablyatargaryen@reddit
That poor kid. At least her mom matured a tad
TheWorldIsNotOkay@reddit
It could have been worse, but not by much.
PuppyJakeKhakiCollar@reddit
I went to school with a Brandy Alexander and used to work with a Jim Collins.
Coca-colonization@reddit
Iāve never heard of a Jim Collins. Do you mean Tom Collins?
elphaba00@reddit
My mom grew up with a Jack Daniels. She said he lived up to his name until he āfound the Lordā
elphaba00@reddit
I knew a Tequila growing up. She lived up to the name. Mean and cruel. I worked with her at my first job. I got in her way, and her response was to literally claw me in the back with her nails.
Fabulous-South-9551@reddit
Hood was the last name or..?
TheWorldIsNotOkay@reddit
Yep. The guy was Robin Hood and the girl was Robyn Hood.
I'd feel bad for mentioning their actual first and last names on the internet, but according to a quick search there's well over 200 people named Robyn Hood in the US, and considerably more named Robin Hood. Which means there are far more people walking around who shouldn't be allowed to name their own kids than I thought.
Indubitalist@reddit
Yeah, but itās funny, though, and think about how great it would be to live your entire life with a funny name, is I assume what his/her parents thought.Ā
Forever_Forgotten@reddit
How do you suppose their parents distinguished them at home.
āBoy Robin! Take out the trash. Girl Robyn! Wash the dishes.ā ???
TheWorldIsNotOkay@reddit
Unfortunately the parents weren't as clever or funny. They just called the son Rob.
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
I knew a girl named Daisy Dew, but her middle name was āwalk me out in the morningā.
moissan2nite@reddit
Thatās a show dog name.
Middleage_dad@reddit
I have an unusual name. Then a kid moved to my town with the same first name and his last name was one letter off from mine. We used to get each others mail all the time.Ā
Sweet_Deeznuts@reddit
Also the one with an unusual name - Gaelic, usually a male name, and went through my entire childhood cursing the lack of ānameā novelty items. To this day, most people are uncertain of how to pronounce it
My husband has a unique last name (Russian) that most people donāt know how to pronounce as well. So when we got married, of course I decided to take his last name. We already have first tricky name, but what about second tricky name?
Astrazigniferi@reddit
My name is unusual, but not weird. I generally love it except when it came to those damn name novelty souvenirs. My parents promised me that if I ever found me something with my name on it they would buy it for me. They had to pay out on that ONCE, at a custom woodcutter who made nameplates. Twice if you count my lettermanās jacket.
Sweet_Deeznuts@reddit
A couple times I was able to find the more common spelling so my mom bought those items and I just changed the letter that was different
Astrazigniferi@reddit
Brenda and Brianne can both get bent. š¤£

Mine... I had one of these Irish names nobody could pronounce correctly, and in a french speaking country on top of it. No wonder I chose such a common name once I transitionned!
No, I won't say it, just know that it was similar to Saroise, which is pronounced Sur-shay . Why, Ireland, why ? š
Logins-Run@reddit
Saoirse is generally pronounced like "Seer-sheh" in Irish (you can hear it here how the three dialects groups would pronounce it https://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/saoirse) but other anglicised pronunciations exist.
But also Irish orthography is actually very consistent and works very well for the language!
PeterPunksNip@reddit
It sure does. It's funny because we do have a name sounding like this in french too, CircƩ . It's a reminder that long ago Gaelic had a dialect spoken in France, Breton, on the north part of France, Bretagne. They are now actively trying to save it, like they did in Ireland with Gaelic. Cool! I hate seeing languages die.
HungryFinding7089@reddit
Gaelic writing.Ā Ā
PeterPunksNip@reddit
Yeah, the Brits forgot to accurately translate Gaelic, and here we are
Logins-Run@reddit
Irish was transcribed by Irish speaking monks, and started using the Latin alphabet before English did. It actually makes perfect sense in Irish. It's very consistent. We don't have any keyed, seed, read, lead, mead, dead, read, lead fiascos etc!
But the main challenges that Irish has initial mutations and a lot more phonemes than English which makes it look very odd to English speakers.
shakespeareriot@reddit
Donchadh (pronounced Donna cuh)

1radgirl@reddit
Where I'm from, for at least a little while, it was popular to give boys names that were traditionally female. Inexplicable really. Some weren't so bad, like Ashley and Tracy. But others were rough, like Courtney and Lacy. Yep, a boy named Lacy. I so wish I was making that up! That poor poor kid. I guess a whole group of parents in rural Utah were johnny cash fans?! Idk. Tragedeigh.
joggingatsea@reddit
Ashley and Courtney were originally male names, looks the same for Lacy. Tracy was gender neutral before getting more popular with girls. So possibly family names?
1radgirl@reddit
I only know the story behind Ashley and Lacy. Ashley was named after the character in Gone With The Wind, his mom was an English teacher, so that checks out, lol. Lacy's parents had the name picked out for a girl, and when it turned out he was a boy, they decided to use it anyway. You're kinda right that it was a family thing, cause that family had three boys, Kelly, Courtney, and Lacy. That was just their style I guess. But the amount of teasing they got was sad, especially on the rodeo circuit.

Petra. It an insane name. I've never met another one in person, though. She still holds a very special place in my heart. Seems to be common for her nationally, and the last name is like...all the last names so, not someone I have found when memory scrolling.
She was like the first ever BFF from grade school to puberty years.
MaartjeM@reddit
Petra is a common name in the Netherlands. Perhaps she has Dutch ancestors.
avalonfaith@reddit
I don't think so. I know/knew her family. I just think it was a great name for a cool human. I can't think of anything else. I don't know her whole ancestry, but the family I met was certainly not Nordic.
We live in a big wide, yet small, world. I would not be surprised about much.
tevta_@reddit
I was replying to another comment how Katja was super popular in my generation, with Petra being even more popular (Slovenia)
tevta_@reddit
Went to check our statistical agency. Petra is on the list of the most common female name on the 13th place, Katja is at the 16th place. Most common for our generation were Maja and Nina.
avalonfaith@reddit
This Petra was Mexican. We're talking late 80s early 90s.
I love this convo, though. So interesting that it'd be a popular Slavic name. The city in Jordan, being what I reference, is also different for Mexico.
Maybe a language thing some professor could tell us about. Also, yeah, professor, please chime in.
kmill0202@reddit
My grandma had a neighbor named Petra. She didn't drive, so she rode an adult sized tricycle around town. Had a big basket mounted to the back to carry her shopping home.
avalonfaith@reddit
Your Petra is life goals.
kmill0202@reddit
She was a very nice lady. She had some minor cognitive disabilities but was still able to live independently and take care of herself. She said she rode the trike because she never learned how to drive and had difficulty balancing on a regular bicycle. Her and my grandma got to be pretty good pals over the years. She would bring grandma fresh produce from her garden, and grandma would drive her if she needed to go somewhere that was too far or too dangerous to go on her tricycle.
Separate-Succotash11@reddit
I work with a young woman Petra. Sheās a great OR nurse!
Exciting-Argument-67@reddit
The one Petra I knew was an exchange student.
avalonfaith@reddit
My Petra's family was very rooted in the community. I would guess that most people didn't even know it, unfortunately. At least my mom and whatever husband sure didn't, not that they were outwardly any type of way. (I'm black, grew up with my all white side family) they just would not have ever imagined.

Later, once I was married, there was a seafood restaurant we loved going to. One time, our waitress was named Mahoganyā¦
Another time, we had a waitress named Cinnamon. We were chatting and I asked her - with the preemptive āplease donāt take this the wrong wayā - whatās it like having a stripper name? Had a friend named Rock. My favorite though, all through school and lived near a kid named Phillip Flowers. Which isnāt particularly unusual, but it has such a nice sound to it.Ā

In 1st & 2nd grade, it was a guy named Cigaro, who was also literally the only black kid in my hick town elementary school at the time, so he got bullied relentlessly, including for his name. In 4th & 5th grade, it was a girl named Hartley. In high school, it was a girl named Faviola.

Paa Shoua, Bupanark, Tang, Yee, Vue, Xilang etc. Not unusual at all in their culture. I always thought Xilang was a really cool name. My name is not uncommon, but the spelling is. Everyone pronounces it wrong. Paired with a noun as a last name, growing up was not super fun. Throw in a three sylable uncommon middle name for a cherry on top. My kids have basic names with common spelling. They do have two middle names each though, because I can't just be basic.

I don't remember any really crazy ones but just crazy spellings and the beginning of last names being used as first names. "Valjean" is the last name thing, to me. Classmate named Spencer in 4th grade, and a girl named Tiffany but it being spelled, like...Tifina, in 3rd grade. I think her parents legally changed the spelling a few years later, like when we were in 6th or 7th grade.
