If you thought this scene was bad, try reading the book

Artax can fucking TALK in the book and does so as he’s drowning. I read it in 2nd or 3rd grade and remember being absolutely destroyed by it. Read it again a few times throughout my life and it’s the same every time
towndrunkislandslut@reddit
No thanks, my grandpa read it it me when I was sick one time.

Fred Savage?

As you wish!
I know it’s the wrong movie, but yeah.
techieveteran@reddit
What’s the movie? I been trying to remember it lately

OMG don't ever 'Laughs in "Grave of the Fireflies"'!!! LOL
notoriousrdc@reddit
Ah, my favorite film that I will never, ever watch again
Bizzy-99@reddit
Holy crap even more traumatic 😞🐴
notoriousrdc@reddit
Not to mention the movie stopped halfway through the plot of the book, and the second half of the book is non-stop emotional devastation. It's still one of my favorites, but goddamn
oracleoflove@reddit
As a lifelong book nerd I still haven’t read this book, after the trauma of where the red fern grows I couldn’t do it lol.
Maybe it’s time….
Burner62391@reddit
I still read this about once every three years or so. Gotta keep the trauma fresh.
TossAGroin2UrWitcher@reddit
Red Fern was rough. I recall our 4th grade teacher reading it aloud to us but she couldn't stop crying after the mountain lion bit. I ended up having to take over for our teacher at that point. That was the quietest the class had ever been. 😕

I read it a couple years ago. The second half is brutal.
The_Pandalorian@reddit
The movie made a good choice. Second half of that book is batshit crazy.
TurboAssRipper@reddit
I just did a reread a few months ago and as soon as I get to the part where Bastian sees the picture of his dad encased in ice i just lose it and can't stop crying through the rest of the book. Tearing up just now thinking about it
moonbunnychan@reddit
Ya...the movie's moral lesson is basically the exact opposite of the book's lol.
spderweb@reddit
Second half is kind of the second movie.
moonbunnychan@reddit
Eh...not really. There's a few similarities but they're MOSTLY different. Even the way the memory loss is treated is completely different.
unicorn-beard@reddit
That's crazy, but honest question - if the horse talked in the movie do you really think the scene would be more devastating? I don't know, there's something about animals and their innocence and the fact that they can't talk that, to me, makes them dying so much worse. Maybe it's because my brain fills in what I think they would be saying or something, I dunno.
BijouWilliams@reddit
I agree with you. I've both read the book and watched the movie about a million times (but not recently). Artax communicating his deep sadness to Atreyu and asking to be left alone to sink and die changes the tenor. It's very sad - a companion resigned to letting himself die and refusing any aid which might hurt Atreyu (letting Artax wear AURYN for a while). But it's not a boy crying for an animal that he loves, needs, and cannot save while watching him drown.
No_Attention_2227@reddit
Personally I'd be closer to a horse that could talk to me than one that was just carrying me around

I don't have enough time to read a book with a story that doesn't end.

I’ve heard the book is way too long

The book encompasses the first two movies.. though the second movie was a serious hatchet job.

Oh no! I just bought the book. Nevertheless, I will read it.
beckypulito@reddit
Amazing book. Hardcover in two text colors was genius.
dudly825@reddit
The book “Momo” by the same author (Ende) is a stone cold classic. It’s out of print in the US but you can get a used paperback cheap.
Recommended for kids & adults. It’s like The Phantom Tollbooth, you’re forever different, in a good way, after reading it.

TOO SOON
lostcosmonaut307@reddit
Wife and I wanted the kids to watch this movie. They were like 12 and 16. They made it to this scene before they absolutely noped out of the movie and have said they will never watch it 😂. I didn’t even remember this scene so I must have trauma blocked it.

Never ending trauma.

lol my partner started reading this book last week and the first thing he said was “omg the horse talks. Imagine how much worse that scene in the movie could’ve been”
spderweb@reddit
I imagined it talking like the caribou in Frozen. So.... Yeah.
spderweb@reddit
Read it first time recently.
So... When he first talked in the book... I imagined his voice like the caribou in Frozen.... And so his death was.... Interesting.

Uh, the book is so so so so so much better. I picked it up once while overseas because I just wanted something English to read, and I remembered the books and it turned out to be my favorite book ever.
Theartistcu@reddit
Agreed the whole second half of the book feels like watching this scene over and over, the Movie is superior.
Aslanic@reddit
Always loved the book more than the movie, my book is battered and falling apart from how well loved it's been.

OMG. When I’m feeling froggy, I post the passage on any of these Artax memes. It’s fucking heartbreaking.
