Where should I go with two weeks in August? Near Italy?

Hey all! I have a study abroad trip to Italy over the summer, and it lets out a few weeks before classes resume, so most students are considering some sort of backpacking trip to fill the extra two to three weeks. As someone with about $2k saved up for that part of the trip, where would be a good idea to visit? I was thinking if I wanted to save a little bit of money Tunisia or Morocco might make sense? Or maybe somewhere in the Balkans? Does anyone have any recommendations?

If you want to go outside Italy, the Balkans would be a good choice -- Bulgaria (Sofia, Plovdiv), Bosnia (Sarajevo, Banja Luka), Serbia (Belgrade), North Macedonia (Skopje, Ohrid) and Albania (Tirana; the seaside towns may be expensive in the summer) are lovely, inexpensive and usually fairly well connected with flights from low cost carriers like RyanAir, EasyJet, Wizz, etc.

As far north as you can afford…

Why north

Trust me. August in Southern Europe is incredibly hot, and most places (and inexpensive lodging) won’t be air conditioned.

Turin! Beautiful and cheap and pretty close to Milan.
