What are your thoughts on moving to a different city without a job secured?

Just as the title states. Thinking of relocating back to Liverpool from Northern Ireland without a job. I had to move back home in the summer after living there for a year. I lost my job in Liverpool due to redundancy and unfortunately couldn’t find one therefore had to move back home and live with my parents on their sofa and it’s ruining my mental health. I’ve been saving non stop since being back and in a temp job and by Christmas I should have around £4,000 saved. I know you should move when you have a job lined up but I was just wondering if anyone has moved without a job lined up and just living off savings? I know for renting you’d need a guarantee which is no problem but I also know most landlords will want you to be working.
Boring Saturday night post! 🙈🤣

I moved to a different country without a job or a visa secured.
I did it twice.
I was young and single though and able to take a risk.

£4k won't last long, this sounds like a potential recipe for homelessness (or, in your case, ending up back on your parents' sofa, after blowing £4k). I wouldn't even think of doing this unless I could support myself for at least six months.
Having said that, it might work out, it's just a risk I wouldn't be take.
If you're that miserable, aren't there any jobs with accommodation thrown in that you could do?

9 years ago I had a complete breakdown, quit my job in anger, failed to maintain the relationship with a partner I owned a flat with, my sister took me in and I was back on my own feet within 6 months. Same happened again 3 years ago and my parents took me in and it was 9 months just to find any employment.
Both times involved at least 3 months of trying my best before ~~asking~~ admitting I needed help
Both times involved a significant geographical move (London to commuter belt Surrey, then to rural Essex). But the luck of the draw on so many factors scares me if I end up in the same situation following the same pattern anytime soon

The job market is what I’m worried about as I know it is shite right now and I’m worried if I just move I’ll struggle to find a job. I was unemployed for 4 months before I found my current job which is temp ended in January & that’s why I just thought about relocating then as I should have £5,000 saved. But I know stupidly that wouldn’t last long. Just living situation isn’t the best
DoIKnowYouHuman@reddit
Yup, although my skillset is quite general and applicable across industries so maybe I had more competition. Have you considered posting in the UK Jobs subs and the relevant geographical subs to see what competition you’re up against? There might even be a uk sub specific to your skills and qualifications that might help
Networking and connections will always help when it comes to finding work, all I have in Liverpool is a cousin who’s a GP but I barely know them anymore
humblevessell@reddit
Yeah, I just moved to bristol stayed in a hostel there and got a job within a week.
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
Glad it worked out well! But the market in Liverpool is horrible for jobs
humblevessell@reddit
Damn it must really suck up north it's a piece of piss to get a job down south they'll take anyone with a pulse. I literally applied to 5 jobs on indeed the night before and got a phone call the next day from some agency saying I can start next week and I hadn't even arrived in Bristol yet haha.
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
Yeah the Liverpool market is horrendous. Even when I lost my job in July and I was applying for new jobs I was applying to maybe 20 per day & even call centres I wasn’t hearing back
humblevessell@reddit
That's crazy I had no idea it was that bad. Maybe it's not the best idea then. You could always move somewhere else in the UK with a better job market just stay in a hostel there and apply for jobs and if you don't get a job within a month then go back home so you don't rinse all your savings.
CronusCronusCronus@reddit
People have done it, sometimes it works sometimes it hasn't.
Where would you live? Most landlords won't let to someone without a job, especially if you don't even have enough savings for a year.
Are you registered with your local NI council that you are homeless? Because you are.
DonkeyKong45@reddit
I've done it before but I had x10 the savings you had now so had a pretty big safety net. I wouldn't dream of doing it on £4K, that lisn't going to last very long if shit hits the fan especially with how the job market is
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s the worrying factor :/
DonkeyKong45@reddit
Really wouldn't recommend it at all. What if you don't find a job, you're at £0 and have to borrow which means interest, that will compound and spiral quickly
Or there's some kind of emergency where that £4K is needed like car repairs, your car being written off etc, now you're at £0 again with no back up for any potential emergencies later on
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s what I thought as well. Wish I could just take a flight over and just live there. I know £4k wouldn’t last very long but I’m just not doing well mentally being back in my parents house at 27 and I haven’t lived here since I was 18, and I’m sleeping on their sofa and it’s just mentally draining me not having somewhere to call my own & don’t know how much longer I can cope. Liverpool is my favourite city and would love to relocate back, but even applying for jobs I’m not getting any interviews or I’m just getting rejected so it’s a nightmare
DonkeyKong45@reddit
This is going to sound so fucking suspect but whatever lol. I may know of a place which will fit the bill.. hotel work like FoH and housekeeping, live in but paid for minimally, minimum wage. Pretty sure they're off season in Dec-Jan but return at some point next year, can DM you the deets if you want (I am not going to harvest your organs I promise). I don't work there, I just know of it.
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
No that’s okay! 🤣🤟🏻 fire a DM away

Liverpool is incredibly hard to find a job in atm if the posts on r/liverpool are anything to go by. We get fairly frequent posts over there from people wanting to relocate but struggling to find something. You’ll also struggle to get housing without a job lined up - do you have someone who would be happy being your guarantor? £4K isn’t enough unfortunately. Even if you did find someone willing to take a risk and have you as a tenant once you’ve done deposit, rent etc you’ve got maybe a couple of months at best. Rent isn’t as cheap in liverpool as it used to be either.
Sorry to not be more encouraging but sadly that’s the reality.
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
No that’s understandable! I know the jobs are tough in Liverpool as I’ve been applying non stop and even for call centre jobs I can’t even get an Interview for them. And I know savings wouldn’t last very long and it would be tough finding a landlord to take me on. Just mentally drained day in day out living off my parents sofa being back home for the first time at 27 since I was 18 & I don’t know how much longer I can cope. And don’t want to live in Northern Ireland anymore either as I’m unhappy here.
Etheria_system@reddit
If the main thing is just wanting to get away from your current situation and you don’t have any specific ties to liverpool aside from having lived there previously, I’d suggest casting the net wider. Look at other cities and just go wherever a job takes you. The job market in liverpool does seem to be particularly dire as you’ve found out but it might not be quite as bad elsewhere.
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
I never really thought of living elsewhere and I just thought about moving back to Liverpool as that’s where my heart is and I’m happiest there. But as you said the job market is shite! But isn’t it the same in every city in the UK? Even in Northern Ireland it’s shite for jobs too.
Ephemeral-laremehp3@reddit
4K will be gone quicker than you think, it’s not a lot to live off even temporarily
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s what I’m thinking :/ rent is cheap in Liverpool even for flat sharing. Just can’t take it anymore living off my parents sofa as it’s ruining my mental health
Etheria_system@reddit
Rent isn’t cheap in liverpool anymore. It’s gone up a lot in the last couple of years
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
Yep, can vouch for that! I was paying £560 for a flatshare without bills included. Northern Ireland is worse as well
Admirable-Recover-97@reddit
This is a bad idea imo, you'd need a fair amount more in savings for this to be feasible, maybe you can rent a room in Liverpool which might be more flexible but sadly I don't think £4k would last very long
Economy-Row-4247@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s understandable, I know £4k wouldn’t last very long but just hate being back here and I know the job market / housing market in Liverpool isn’t well right now. Even trying to get call centre jobs is impossible
