Toyota or Honda? (Rust)

I wonder which of the two car brands, Toyota and Honda, and which models/years, are more reputed to be less prone to rusting or never rusting over the years in Canada. What are your experiences and opinions?

Honda and Toyota are usually very robust in terms of mechanical and electrical components, but not so much with the body. European vehicles tend to require more expensive maintenance but the body holds up much better. You rarely see a rusted Audi, Volvo, or Benz. I have 2 Mercedes, a 2011 and 2012. Parked outside and driven daily in Nova Scotia, no undercoating. Both cars are clean, no rust at all underneath.

My VW disagrees with you.

VW are mostly made in Mexico with domestic steel, that’s the difference.

Toyota and Honda Corrosion Warranty: 5 years.
Volvo and BMW: 12 years.
Mercedes.... 4. Shameful.

Well, like I said, my 2011 and 2012 are rust free. Best warranty is the one you never need.

Toyota is better with rust. Either way, get an undercoat every year. It'll add years to the life of the car.

Thanks for your response,. I have a Toyota Yaris and there is rust in the frame, but it's a 2007. I've heard because there's no cover in this model; does there need to be a cover under the frame to prevent the rust from becoming a real problem?

You just need a rustproofing treatment for the undercarriage. It's basically spray paint that holds up to snow and ice

Newer cars are way less prone to rust than older cars. Other than that sweeping observation, your mileage may vary. Depends an awful lot on where the car is driven and parked. My Hyundai Accent has no noticeable rust after 10 years in southern Ontario. My 2000 Mazda Protege (which I bought used in 2010) couldn't keep its wheels pointing in the same direction by 2016 (when I bought the Accent).
