Some schools ban haircuts that are "too short"?

Is it right or wrong that a hair style can be too short for school? Opinions welcome.
Palestine_Achtung@reddit
Was a rule at one of my schools last century.
The idea is to prepare children for adulthood where certain standards apply in certain scenarios.
But, hey, fuck following rules. Let kids do whatever they want and see what effect this has on social cohesion
blamordeganis@reddit
What jobs, or other social scenarios, ban shaved heads?
Palestine_Achtung@reddit
As I said above, if you re-read my comment, it's part of preparing children for adulthood.
Lots of employers traditionally had appearance 'standards', and abiding by social norms is (was) part of school life.
Obviously, that's all gone out of the window now, and bad lifestyle choices seem to be the order of the day

And if you re-read mine, you’ll see I asked: where in adulthood are very short hair styles frowned on? They are generally considered neat and tidy these days, and an evenly shaved head is often considered preferable to a bald spot.

I went to school in the 70s. Skinheads were not welcome.

Pisses me off when schools exclude kids for their haircuts, denying kids an education because the teacher doesn't like their haircut is dispicable but at least it gives parents a way to game the system and take kids on holiday during term time without having to pay a fine
atomic_mermaid@reddit
Lol. They put the kid in isolation to study, not send em home.
kahdgsy@reddit
Why do you think the teacher has any say in the rule?
0riginal0scar@reddit
They have the choice to compliment the kid by telling them they like their new haircut which will build the kids confidence or to report it to the head teacher and ensure it is enforced which will make the kid feel like they are being singled out and make them feel like shit
Vivid_Employment8635@reddit
The only possible reason I can think of is skinheads? Other than that I can’t see why it’s a problem. I think the rules should be the same as they would be in a lot of workplaces, where it has to be relatively neat and tidy but specific hairstyle beyond that doesn’t matter.

My secondary school (private Christian one) banned boys from having long hair but having a shaved head was also not allowed so yeah
'long' hair was hair that touched your collar, my school participated in a 'convention' (basically a residential trip where you competed with other church schools) and their standards were so strict a year I didn't go one of my classmates was made to get his hair cut as you'd get inspected when you showed up and they deemed his hair too long.
dweeb93@reddit
Lol what do you do in that situation, stay at home until your hair grows back?
Koda614@reddit
At my school where they had this rule you would be put in isolation all day every day until it grew back. Number 2 was the shortest hair allowed.
They actually pushed too far when they tried to put a kid with leukemia in isolation as treatment meant the hair had to be shaved or would be falling out in undesirable ways. The shitstorm that followed led to the rule being scrapped for everyone immediately afterwards.

What the absolute fuck
LemmysCodPiece@reddit
This is where it all falls apart. I can see why schools would ban outrageous hair styles like Mohawks or bright colours. But too short? Really?
No_Height_2408@reddit
I honestly cant see why they need to ban any hairstyle. They are happy to rake in the £100s for own clothes days / costume days without any ill effects on teaching.
LemmysCodPiece@reddit
Our school sent out a sexist letter banning items of clothing from own clothes day. This letter literally singled out clothes generally worn by girls. They tried to ban me for openly questioning it.
Turkilton-Is-Me@reddit
I got sent home from school in the 00’s for having a bright green stripe through my hair, went to the extremes of buzz cutting my hair all over and I had to sit in isolation for a week till it wasn’t a skinhead
Similar_Beginning842@reddit
Was a while ago but when I was at school the shortest a lad could have his hair was a grade 2.
I didn’t really understand why having shorter was an issue.
Turkilton-Is-Me@reddit
I remember the same and thought it had something to do with skinheads.
Azyall@reddit
At my secondary school in the late '70s/early '80s the shave-it-all-off skinhead look was absolutely banned. If anyone did it, they were excluded until it had grown a bit.
hollyyy16@reddit
I can remember it being in our school rules that boys couldn’t have hair below a grade 2(?) I think. I was at school in the late 2010s.
DonkeyKong45@reddit
I was sent home because I came in pretty much near on bald in year 5, this was in the 2000s.
My sister also got sent home at some point during secondary school for having Bantu knots and was told "there's too much scalp showing", by the headmaster who was bald. Lol.
novelty-socks@reddit
Citation needed. Any examples of this happening?
(General opinion: A kid's hairstyle is irrelevant, they should be able to attend school whatever.)
ActionBirbie@reddit
Never heard of this, so it's hard to have an opinion - Is it just a theoretical question?
Ill_Refrigerator_593@reddit
My school used to (skinheads were fashionable amongst kids at the the time), but effectively they didn't do anything if someone did do it.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Never seen it happen. Do your have examples? Only times I really heard of it was in strict (and weirdly religious) all girls school's that banned short cuts because they were deemed to be too gay.
