My parents gave me my Grandpa’s clapper after he passed. It must have been like 1990. It was an older clapper too. The fucking thing caught fire, nearly burned the house down. My dad had to use the fire extinguisher. I was about 8 at the time standing there like a dumbass.

My cousin thought she caught the clap. Her older sister, home at the holidays for college, followed her around singing the theme song. My clueless grandma produly presented them both with a clapper on Christmas morning because they couldn't stop talking about them.
Brashear99@reddit
Some friends & I were hanging out when one of the guys chimed in with a “guess what happened to Rick?” He proceeded to clap out the theme song. Most of us busted out laughing with a couple others looking confused, so we had to explain it to them.

🤣💀

That's hilarious

Bought one recently for a lamp in our living room. It’s one of those ones with the heavy base that sits behind the couch & has a long arm to reach out into the middle of the room. It’s been great not having to reach behind the couch to turn it on/off.

My husband came across one a few years ago and bought it for my daughter. Then we had to lie in bed and listen to her clap 15 times every night to get her light off. I’m glad it’s stopped working, lol
Glittering_Tea5502@reddit
I hear that ad in my head a lot. Lol

One of my friends was so.wxcited to share how he hooked his bedroom lights into smart plugs and now he can turn off the lights by asking Alexa.
I had to remind him this wasn't exactly a novel setup.
Morriganx3@reddit
I refuse to use Alexa, but we have remote control plugs for this reason. They are awesome
hasnt_been_your_day@reddit
I joked for a couple years about getting a clapper, because the last light left on the bedroom always seemed to be the lamp across the room.
Husband,a thoughtful guy with a sense of humor, got me an off brand clapper! And we used it for a while. We discovered, to our amusement, that (adult, consensual, sexy time) booty smacking would turn off the lamp!
We have plugs that husband can turn off from his phone now. less funny, but more reliable

Glorified kitchen timer and digital picture frame that spies on my family
nounthennumbers@reddit
I had my stereo plugged into on. It caused it to start smoking and it never worked again
unicorn-beard@reddit (OP)
Damn I had an uncle who started smoking and never worked again either
TurtleToast2@reddit
The clapper or the stereo?
dufflebag7@reddit
It had to be the same advertising agency as the Chia pet.
unicorn-beard@reddit (OP)
The same person who created the chia pet created the clapper! RIP Joseph Pedott.

Legend.
dufflebag7@reddit
Honestly did not know this! Thanks.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
At least when you lost your remote back then your VCR and TV had buttons.
Better yet some didn't have remotes at all. Thus a clapper was too much work.
kinopiokun@reddit
We had one on the Christmas tree lights as a kid. My parents fought a lot, and I have a vivid memory of my mom yelling at my dad “Fuck. You!” and the tree lights came on. Good times.
bentripin@reddit
I had one of the original ones in my bedroom to turn the CRT TV w/no remote on and off.. Then my little sister was born, we shared a room her crub under bunk bed, one night I woke up her crying.. which turned the TV on the classic thunk they made, which made her cry harder.. so it shut off with another thunk, which upset her more.. both her and the TV were stuck in a loop and I hadda get out of bed and go push the button on the TV off.. and then she quickly calmed down and went back to bed.
gravengrouch@reddit
44 is dumb and I never meant to get this old, now I want a fuckin clapper
Surlyllama23@reddit
We had one! The living room lamps would turn on and off whenever our dog would bark.
Mungo1977@reddit
Being a Brit of a certain age i onky knew these existed because of Waynes World
Big-Foot-141@reddit
That VHS though.

Long after its heyday, I got one for my bedroom so I could turn on the light on my nightstand from the hallway, where the main light switch is, then cross my bedroom in the light, and turn it off when I got into bed.
The alternatives were: 1. Cross the bedroom to turn on the nightstand light, walk back to the door to turn off the main light, walk back to the bed and turn off the nightstand light upon getting into bed, or 2. Cross the bedroom in the dark and risk bumping my toe on the furniture.
Of course, today I just use my phone’s light.
313Wolverine@reddit
My dad had one one of these. Every time he got mad and yelled God Damnit! The living room light would turn on or off.
unicorn-beard@reddit (OP)
GOT DAMNIT
313Wolverine@reddit
Close. But Im not feeling it would trigger the clap it.
Nightshade111@reddit
I still have a clapper upstairs in my library. It blinks on and off when I cough though

My grandma bought one for my dad. He hated it cause everytime he snored the tv went on and off. I could hear it and didn’t know what was going on noise no noise I didn’t sleep well that first and last night my dad used it.
No_Today_4903@reddit
I wanted one of these so bad! I wonder if they worked? I have Alexa to do my dirty work now and she is a temperamental hoe at best 🤣🤣 I also really wanted didi 7 for all that pesky ring around the collar that I’m not sure ever existed? I really wanted chichichia too! Never had any of that cool as seen on tv stuff!
TwilightTink@reddit
I could never get mine to work. I guess I clap wrong
SpaceCadetEdelman@reddit
Christmas’87 my Godmother got my Godfather a clapper, they had a new baby, just after the thing was plugged in the baby cried and the light turned off.. oh clapper.
whiskeytown79@reddit
I built one of these from HeathKit when I was like 11.
slappy_mcslapenstein@reddit
I don't. I never knew anyone who had one.
usernames_suck_ok@reddit
People actually bought those? I thought they were just to make TV shows more interesting.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
My mom loved them. Mostly for the Christmas tree because no one was allowed to actually step foot in the living room for at least a week after the cleaning lady came because my mom hated footprints on the carpet.
unicorn-beard@reddit (OP)
"Clap on! 👏👏 Clap off! 👏👏 Clap on, clap off... it's THE CLAPPER"
I never had one personally but I remember buying one for my Grandma so she could turn the lights off without getting out of bed or whatever. I re-call them not working very well and her getting frustrated with them.
DZello@reddit
probably more power efficient than wifi alternatives.
Hour-Elevator-5962@reddit
Pretty sure that VCR wins the novelty contest.
