Is using AI to prevent crimes too much? Where does this fall in the ideological compass?

Is it too much to prevent crimes? Maybe stopping crimes before they happen would make our society better at the expense of what we do in our public internet access?

I think AI isn't the issue so much as the boundaries of what others are and are not ethically and morally permitted to do, and since most of the population seems to not respect much of anything in terms of such boundaries, I'm against it. I don't think it falls on the ideological compass at all, anymore than a gun does. They're both tools, the person/institution wielding the tool can be the issue. Since governments tend toward expansion and abuse of their power, I think all their power should be strictly limited regardless of what benefits might come if they weren't. I definitely think in individual instances you can reach counter intuitive conclusions as to what to do or what 'side' to support on this issue or that which might lead to a person allying with 'the left' or 'the right' on different issues, but I don't see that here, at least not as of yet.
Of course, as a practical matter, I'm not sure if this can be stopped or limited in any way, so I guess we'll find out. My guess is they're going to use it anyway. I think what's more interesting is what that use might expose, both in who commits crimes more or less, who gets targeted more or less, who gets sentences more or less, etc. For example, lots of people on 'the right' in the US claim crime is out of control and the US is soft on crime, but I have trouble squaring that with our incarceration rates. If we're so free here, and we're so soft on crime, what's everyone rotting in jail and prison for? My guess is there's something even deeper than racial and socioeconomic disparities, and that certain victims gets more 'justice' than others, and my guess is that skews toward those with political connections and money, or both, and that this likely supersedes all the other things people usually obsess over when it comes to the US justice system. AI might expose that, or exacerbate it, and either one would be interesting to see, along with society's overall response when it's exposed.

Yes.

What do you mean by "prevent" crimes? Hoovering information to arrest people for thought-crimes? That's pretty dystopian/authoritarian.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
It is, that's what's happening in the UK Check my other responses to understand my lean.

Depends what “stopping crime” means.
Police showing up to tell someone they are watching before they steal something? Great!
Police showing up to arrest someone because they believe they are going to steal something (but haven’t actually committed a crime). Hell no!

Personally i think of it like a punishment measure, you do something fucked up, you get the internet's ankle monitor, wouldn't that be cool?
minedsquirrel70@reddit
The proposed system of “predicting crimes by recognizing patterns” violates so many privacy protections, and if anything is done about it then it goes against due process. It would fall far authoritarian left.
sense_make@reddit
Ideology aside, AI is making so many mistakes it's a recipe for disaster. It will ultimately be put in front of some paper pusher with no critical thinking skills to review, and because computer says you're guilty of something it must be true.

Thos depends on how it works. I'm assuming it does so by interfering with the freedoms these people who aren't criminals have, like in the movie minority report.
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
Creating a society where crime is less prevalent and people from all walks of life thrive would prevent most crime before it happens…
No ai necessary.
Only human kindness necessary

I agree with you
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
Cool. Didn’t understand the meme bud
Really wish we could learn to be kind and help one another. We don’t need government or surveillance we just need humanity.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
Human nature impedes that, empathy is now a resource, we need to find more people like you and me to make the planet something to live in and not survive in.
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
Human nature impedes what kindness?
I don’t think so, I think being kind is our natural state. Just many of us get hurt sadly and we go into states of fear.
CalligrapherOther510@reddit
You don’t need to turn the country into an Orwellian police state to do that you just simply implement harsh punishment in prisons I am 100% for using prisoners as slave labor and executing rapists and murderers but setting up cameras with AI to catch a homeless guy drinking a beer out of a tall boy at a 7/11 parking lot is ridiculous.
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
Maybe if the vast majority of our prison population wasn’t imprisoned.
But as it if you’re taking about using non violent drug offenders who shouldn’t be in prison to begin with as slaves.
Awesome take that won’t make society any safer but would rather do the opposite.
CalligrapherOther510@reddit
I literally said I support legalizing drugs I think prison should be just for murderers, thieves and rapists drug users would be open to use all the fentanyl they want in my world but someone like Jeffery Dahmer would absolutely be used as a slave.
Status-Anteater8372@reddit
A failure in ai can put an innocent man in jail for life claiming prevention. AI is not omniscient.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
True.
ScalpelMine@reddit
Like someone else said, it depends on how it's used.
Using it to determine where crime is most likely to occur, and increasing security in those areas as a deterrent is fine.
Using it to analyze everyone's personal data to determine who is most likely to commit a crime, and monitoring or detaining them before they do, not so much.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
I agree with the first philosphy, like being with a ankle monitor but in the internet, for those that shared harmful toughts like a kid that was found planning a school shooting in Buenos Aires.
ScalpelMine@reddit
Sure, but there's a difference between analyzing things people post on public forums on the internet, and things they say privately via text message/email or jot down in a personal note on their phone.
If it's being used for the former, there's no issue. But digging into private correspondence without consent is a violation of people's rights.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
Exactly, it would be a punishable offense rather than a trip for everyone that just uses the internet.
CalligrapherOther510@reddit
Except a majority of crimes aren’t even violent and are things that should be legalized like open drug use and alcohol consumption, as for someone stealing or gang violence again if drugs were legalized gangs would shrink, and drug users would just OD eliminating themselves from the equation its a win win for liberty and societal hygiene.
ScalpelMine@reddit
Agreed. I was thinking along those lines. Robberies, murders, and the like. I probably should have clarified that in my response.
CalligrapherOther510@reddit
It is the antithesis of libertarianism and unconstitutional by American standards and it’s infuriating that there is more awareness or outrage against it.
gonzoll@reddit
As with most things it’s just a tool and a lot depends on how it will be used.
